- Is the state of the Indian economy “near-crisis”? Is weak private investment the key problem? Despite the government’s well-intentioned reforms are its deeper instincts and habits putting off investors? And is the solution changing personnel at ministerial, technocratic and bureaucratic levels? And does that in fact mean it’s time to replace Nirmala Sitharaman as Finance Minister? Those are the views of my guest, former Chief Economic Advisor and Senior Fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, Arvind Subramanian. That’s live today, Thursday the 28th May, at 5.30 p.m. (8.00 a.m. in Boston and 1.00 p.m. in London).

- Governance Failures Are Worsening The Impacts of Heat. Here’s How.

- Description
- India is living through a gruelling heatwave right now. While climate change may play a role, it is becoming increasingly apparent that governance failures are aggravating the impacts of heatwaves across the country.
The Indian government does not recognise a heatwave as a national disaster.; heat deaths are still drastically undercounted. More easier and visible short-term actions are implemented and funded more over crucial long-term actions. And those long-term actions that are being implemented – such as tree planting – are often not targeted at the right people or places, and therefore do not reach the communities that are the most vulnerable to high heat risks. But there are ways out, scientists say.

- Description
- Development economist Dipa Sinha and RTI activist Nikhil Dey spoke to The Wire about the messages emerging from the newly elected West Bengal government. The discussion in the state is increasingly about exclusion, not inclusion, in welfare policies and schemes. There is a concern that decisions on welfare benefits might be based on the SIR conducted in the state. The SIR outcome is also being linked with citizenship, which, they warned, could have dangerous consequences for the country as a whole. It is not just the voter struck off the rolls in SIR who may be excluded from welfare but, in many cases, entire families that depend on the voter to access schemes that give the most marginalised some dignity and ability to survive. There is no denying that voter rolls need to be corrected from time to time, but the concern is about the consequences of linking the exercise to welfare and citizenship.

What do we know of the terms of the peace deal that Pakistan is brokering? How credible are they? Who does the advantage lie with? But if President Trump resorts to war what can he achieve? Can he force Iran to agree to what it’s today reluctant to accept? Or have his threats of war become predictable and hollow? Those are the issues I shall raise with the Iran Project Director of the International Crisis Group, Ali Vaez, live today, 26th May, at 12.30 p.m. (9.00 a.m. in Geneva and 8.00 a.m. in London).

- ‘Failure of the Union Govt’: Fourth Fuel Price Hike in Two Weeks Draws Ire

- Description
- Fuel prices in India have gone up again, marking the fourth hike in just two weeks. Petrol prices were raised by ₹2.61 per litre and diesel by ₹2.71 per litre, taking the total increase in less than 15 days to nearly ₹7.5 per litre.
But why is this happening? Is it only because of rising global crude oil prices and tensions in West Asia, or is there more to the story?
This hike comes even as reports say state-run oil companies have posted thousands of crores in profits, raising questions about why ordinary citizens continue to bear the burden. And the impact goes beyond fuel — higher diesel prices can push up transportation costs, leading to rising prices of food, medicines, and essential goods.
In this video, we break down what’s driving the latest fuel price hike, how it affects your daily life, and why the opposition is attacking the government over rising inflation.

- Description
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi's five nation tour just days after he urged Indians to adopt austerity measures including not travelling abroad, has been in the headlines for reasons that have little to do with bilateral relations.
Press freedom questions in Norway and the Netherlands, and a reel with Italian PM Georgia Meloni have been the major takeaways amid questions of how the Indian economy is coping in the aftermath of the shocks from the West Asia conflict.
Meanwhile at home, Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant's remarks comparing unemployed youth to cockroaches and parasites has stirred a controversy, leading the CJI to issue a clarification of sorts.
The Wire's senior political correspondent Sravasti Dasgupta is joined by Sangeeta Barooah Pisharoty, senior journalist and Ghazala Wahab, author and editor, Force Magazine.

In his latest book the holocaust and genocide studies scholar Omer Bartov asks the question ‘Israel: What Went Wrong?’ How did a state founded in 1948 in idealism end up guilty of genocide? How did Zionism transform from a movement to emancipate European Jews into a state ideology of ethnonationalism focused on the violent domination of the Palestinian people? And does the Jewish belief they are the chosen people lead the majority of Israelis to conclude that whatever they do is correct and criticism of Israel is antisemitism? Finally, is Israel becoming a pariah state? Those are the issues I shall raise today with Omer Bartov, Dean’s Professor of Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Brown University. That’s live Thursday the 21st of May at 6.00 p.m. (8.30 a.m. in Boston).

- Rajasthan-based journalists Deep Mukherjee and Tabeenah Anjum discuss in the latest episode of Book Shook their new book, 'From Dynasties to Democracy: Politics, Caste and Power Struggles in Rajasthan' (Macmillan, 2026). Caste dynamics and mobilisations form the spine of a large section of the book, which details the political history of the state since independence. The authors say caste shapes Rajasthan's political identity. But what matters even more is the details of who asserts, why, and the responses to it.
