- From the unprecedented refusal of a sitting Chief Minister to resign citing election malpractices to the mysterious "Secret Algorithm" that disenfranchised lakhs, we ask whether the Bengal elections met the threshold of free and fair elections. RTI activists Anjali Bhardwaj and Amrita Johri are joined by political researcher and analyst Yamini Aiyar in this edition of Jaanne Bhi Do Yaaro to decode the troubling issues the West Bengal Elections 2026 raise for India's democracy.
In an unprecedented step, the Chief Minister of Bengal Mamata Banerjee refused to resign after the elections alleging manipulation in the elections including that her party's counting agents were physically removed from centers, CCTV cameras were deliberately switched off and there was tampering with EVMs. The party demanded that CCTV footage of counting centre should be disclosed for public viewing.
In this video we discuss the impact of SIR on people and the eventual electoral outcom...

- During the SIR hearings before the apex court, Supreme Court judge, Justice Joymalya Bagchi had said, “If 10% of the electorate does not vote and the winning margin is more than 10%…what will happen? Suppose the margin is 2% and 15% of [the] electorate who are mapped could not vote?”
Electoral outcomes in fiercely contested regions are often decided by razor-thin margins, where every vote counts.
Aparna Bhattacharya finds that the constituency-level data suggests that the SIR was not just a routine roll-cleaning exercise in West Bengal. Its political significance comes from one central fact – in a large number of seats, the number of deleted voters was larger than the winning margin.

I'm deeply concerned by the election results; the Republic has no reason to celebrate: Yogendra Yadav, National Convenor, Bharat Jodo Abhiyan, to Karan Thapar for The Wire.
In an interview to discuss the election results that were announced yesterday (the 4th of May) as well as what they mean for India as a whole and what they suggest about the BJP’s hold over the country, Yogendra Yadav, the National Convenor of the Bharat Jodo Abhiyan, has said he is deeply concerned, adding he doesn’t believe the Indian Republic has reasons to celebrate the outcome. “As a democrat, as someone who thinks about the future of the Indian Republic, I am deeply concerned. I don’t resent the winners. They have every reason to celebrate. But does the country, does the Republic, have reasons to celebrate? I am not sure.”
