- A massive fire broke out on Wednesday morning in a building housing a hotel and restaurant in South Delhi’s Malviya Nagar, killing at least 21 people and injuring several others. More than 40 people were rescued and shifted to hospitals, while officials fear the death toll may rise.
Eyewitnesses at the scene told The Wire that some people were seen jumping from the upper floors of the building in an attempt to escape the flames. Officials said several of those killed were foreign nationals, mainly from Central Asia and Africa.
The building is located near Max Hospital in Saket and is often occupied by relatives and friends of patients undergoing treatment at the hospital. According to available information, the hotel had been licensed under the Delhi government’s Bed and Breakfast Scheme.
Teams from the NDRF, Delhi Fire Services and other emergency agencies are carrying out rescue and relief operations at the site.

In an interview to discuss the cumulative impact of the Gulf War on Indian agriculture, Ashok Gulati, Professor of Agriculture at ICRIER and arguably India's foremost authority on the subject, says: “The economy seems to be on the brink of a major crisis".
Professor Gulati is particularly concerned about how the fertiliser subsidy is likely to surge this year. He believes that it could balloon from 1.71 lakh crore to 3.0 lakh crore. He also points out that the cost at which urea is imported is $935 per tonne but it's sold at $70 per tonne.
Professor Gulati points out that the time has come to end such freebies and he proposes three reforms which would help reduce the fertiliser subsidy.
