- The U.S. military carried out strikes in southern Iran targeting missile launch sites and boats capable of laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz, according to military officials. The Pentagon described the operation as self-defense aimed at protecting American forces.
The strikes came as President Donald Trump said nuclear negotiations with Iran were proceeding "nicely" and reports suggested a possible peace agreement could be taking shape. Iranian state media reported explosions near a major military port and said four Iranian troops were killed.
Iran has vowed retaliation, raising new questions about whether ongoing negotiations can survive the latest military action.

- Officials who have been scrambling to find a safe resolution after a tank containing a hazardous chemical at a Southern California aerospace plant was damaged believe the risk of a catastrophic explosion has been eliminated. But they said Monday that the evacuation order affecting tens of thousands of residents remains in place.
The storage tank at GKN Aerospace containing about 6,000 to 7,000 gallons (23,000 to 26,500 liters) of methyl methacrylate overheated last week in Garden Grove, a city in Orange County.
Officials have said the tank vented vapors as pressure and temperatures rose, but that monitoring has not detected hazardous chemical levels.
No injuries have been reported, but more than 50,000 nearby residents were ordered to evacuate their homes over the Memorial Day weekend.
Officials had feared the contents of the tank could leak into the atmosphere or even explode. But they said Monday that an overnight inspection confirm...

Despite the mud-slinging, most polls show Paxton holding a razor-thin lead. That was also the case in March, when Cornyn outperformed the polling and won a spot in the runoff by a margin of 2%.

He pointed to Saudi Arabia and Qatar as countries that should “immediately” sign on, followed by Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt and Jordan. Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates became the first countries to join in 2020.

On Sunday, Congolese authorities said suspected cases have now passed 900 in the east of the country, mainly in Ituri Province, where the ongoing outbreak is centered.
The burning last week of the centers in two towns at the heart of the outbreak exposed the anger in a region beset by violence linked to armed rebel groups, the displacement of a large number of people, the failure of local government and international aid cuts that experts say have stripped health facilities in vulnerable communities.
“A devastating set of emergencies are converging,” said the Physicians for Human Rights nonprofit.

- The Trump administration’s changes to federal student loan rules could worsen shortages of doctors, nurses and physician associates (PAs), according to Todd Pickard, president of the American Academy of Physician Associates. The Department of Education has redefined “professional degree,” removing PAs, advanced nursing, physical therapy and other medical fields from the category. Students in these programs will now be limited to $20,500 in federal loans annually, compared with $50,000 before.
Pickard warns the move may deter students, reducing the health care pipeline and straining rural areas already facing shortages. Within five to six years, he said, half of medical providers will be physicians and the other half PAs or nurse practitioners, making federal loan access essential. Twenty-five states have filed lawsuits to block the rule, set to take effect July 1. The DOE argues most nursing grads borrow below the new cap and that loan limits could reduce rising tui...

"So, very high prices, close to record levels," said GasBuddy's Patrick De Haan. "Collectively over the weekend, Americans are going to be spending about $2 billion more than they did last year."
Higher fuel costs are also driving airfares up.
The TSA is expecting to screen more than 18 million passengers over the long weekend. But those steeper airfares have some travelers reconsidering future summer travel.
If you are planning travel in the months ahead, experts say:

The announcement from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services is the latest step by the Trump administration making legal immigration more difficult for foreigners already in the U.S. and for those hoping to come here.
The changes comes on top of steps the administration has already taken to restrict and limit entry for people from dozens of countries. In some cases, there ...

Health officials believe James Martin contracted rabies after being scratched by a skunk while protecting a rescued kitten outside his home. His organs and tissues were donated across several states, leading to a public health response when a kidney recipient later developed symptoms of rabies.
Scripps News investigates how the virus may have been transmitted through organ donation, why rabies testing is not standard for donors, and how doctors and the CDC worked to prevent additional infections in a rare transplant-related rabies case.

- An immigrant held in Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody for almost four months needs surgery to relieve intense abdominal pain and determine if she has cancer, her attorneys say.
ICE arrested Andrea Pedro-Francisco on Feb. 5 during immigration enforcement sweeps in the Minneapolis area. Pedro-Francisco, 23, is a house cleaner from Guatemala who came to the U.S. in 2019 where she had been living without legal status, according to ICE.
Her arrest occurred five days before she was scheduled to have surgery to remove a golf-ball sized ovarian cyst and have it checked for cancer. She has been receiving medication but still has no approval for surgery.

- Description
- Congress is now expected to miss President Donald Trump’s self-imposed June 1 deadline to pass a roughly $70 billion funding package for ICE and Customs and Border Protection.
The package also includes $1 billion for ballroom security, as well as a controversial $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization fund” sought by Trump. Senate Republicans were planning to pass the measure without Democratic support, but divisions within the GOP over the proposal stalled momentum Thursday.
Senators had been expected to begin voting on the package Thursday before Republicans abruptly decided to send members home for the weekend.

- Ebola treatment center burned down amid chaos in Congo

- Description
- The Ebola treatment center in Rwampara in the Democratic Republic of Congo, burned Thursday as gunshots could be heard nearby and local residents were seen chasing away and hitting a white four-wheel drive vehicle often used by NGOs in the area.
The treatment center was set up on Tuesday, but was not operational yet. However, healthcare teams were storing bodies in the center to prepare them for proper burial, an important step in containing Ebola outbreaks.
A security coordinator working for the Ebola response said the incident was a result of a "misunderstanding" as relatives tried to retrieve a body of a person who earlier died of the virus.
"His family, friends, and other young people wanted to take his body home for a funeral, even though the instructions from the authorities during this Ebola virus outbreak are clear: all bodies must be buried according to the regulations related to this pandemic," Jean Claude Mukendi explained.

- Today as it Happened on Wednesday, May 20, 2026:
Federal prosecutors on Wednesday announced charges against former Cuban President Raúl Castro in the 1996 downing of civilian planes operated by Miami-based exiles as the Trump administration escalated pressure on the socialist government.
The indictment was related to Castro’s alleged role in the shootdown of two small planes operated by the exile group Brothers to the Rescue. Castro, now 94, was Cuba's defense minister at the time. The charges included murder and destruction of an airplane.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche and other top Justice Department officials made the announcement in Miami at a ceremony to honor those killed in the shootdown.
“For nearly 30 years, the families of four murdered Americans have waited for justice,” Blanche said. “They were unarmed civilians and were flying humanitarian missions for the rescue and protection of people fleeing oppression...

- Description
- Two police officers who helped defend the U.S. Capitol from an attack by a mob of Trump supporters sued on Wednesday to block anyone — including Jan. 6, 2021, rioters — from receiving payouts from a new $1.776 billion settlement fund for people who claim to be victims of politically motivated prosecutions.
The officers' attorneys filed the federal lawsuit a day after Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche defended the fund's creation during a congressional hearing. Blanche, a personal attorney for President Donald Trump before joining the Justice Department, wouldn't rule out the possibility that rioters who assaulted police on Jan. 6 would be eligible for fund payouts.
The lawsuit claims the government's “Anti-Weaponization Fund" is an illegal slush fund that Trump will use to “finance the insurrectionists and paramilitary groups that commit violence in his name.” It describes the fund's creation as "the most brazen act of presidential corruption this...

- Mississippi residents say a clean energy plant is making them sick

- Description
- The dust settles overnight in Gloster, Mississippi. Surveillance cameras catch it floating through the air, swirling across town on windy nights. By morning, it often coats residents’ cars, porches, and sometimes finds its way into their homes. They say they become accustomed to wiping it away, only to find it back again, sometimes in the same week.
Melvin Whigham says he can feel it in his body.
“It just feels like something caught up in there,” he told Scripps News during an interview in his home, his voice strained. “Every once in a while, I can spit up stuff. I don't have no cold. And my voice starts going … then I get a shortness of breath.”
Doctors, he says, haven’t been able to explain what’s happening to him.
He lives in Gloster, a town of roughly 800 people tucked into the pine forests of southwest Mississippi, where many residents believe they already know the answer.
Just beyond their backyards ...
