The United States and Iran have tentatively agreed to a memorandum of understanding that would extend their ceasefire for 60 days, two sources familiar with the matter told Scripps News.
The ceasefire, which began April 8, would remain in place while talks over Iran’s nuclear program continue.
As part of the proposed agreement, the Strait of Hormuz would reopen to commercial traffic, and the United States would ease its naval blockade in stages as Iran demonstrates compliance with the deal, the sources said.
Aid workers rushed supplies Thursday to the center of Congo's outbreak of a rare type of Ebola virus while beleaguered medical personnel struggled with a lack of equipment, a distrustful population and armed groups in a volatile region.
A white cargo plane with aid donated by the European Union delivered masks, gloves, boots and medications — all of which are in shor...

- Description
- A key inflation gauge accelerated in April to the highest level in three years, squeezing Americans' finances and creating political challenges for President Trump and congressional Republicans with midterm elections just five months away.
Inflation jumped to 3.8% in April compared with a year ago, the Commerce Department said Thursday, up from 3.5% in March and the highest since May 2023. On a monthly basis, prices rose 0.4%, down from the 0.7% jump in March but still higher than the inflation-fighters at the Federal Reserve would prefer.
Thursday’s inflation report also showed that in addition to gasoline, prices for groceries, clothing and electricity are also on the rise, indicating that inflation could persist. Inflation is also notably above the Federal Reserve's target of 2%, which means Fed policymakers may decide to forego any cuts to their key short-term interest rate this year. Some officials have signaled that the central bank's next move could b...

- President Donald Trump has been showcasing his influence in Republican primaries, recently endorsing Ken Paxton in Texas. And he said at his Cabinet meeting Wednesday that Paxton's big victory over Sen. John Cornyn is a preview of Republican victories in November. But Trump's strong grip on the party could backfire in the midterms.
Many voters are unhappy with Trump’s second term and the economy, which has been roiled by trade conflicts and the war with Iran. Democrats see an opportunity in Trump’s struggles, aiming to flip seats by highlighting economic concerns and other issues in their campaigns. Despite this, Trump remains a powerful fundraiser and the undisputed leader of the Republican Party.

- As Europe’s new Entry/Exit System (EES) begins rolling out, many American travelers may feel uncertain about what to expect when heading overseas this summer.
For non-European travelers, the new system requires facial, fingerprints, and passport scans at self-service kiosks when arriving in Europe.
But according to travel expert Tomeka Jones, travelers shouldn’t panic.
While the self-service kiosks are creating long lines in some of the 29 Europeans countries implementing the system, Jones recommends allowing an extend layover of 2 to 3 hours before a connecting flight.
“The days of getting a passport stamp, especially in Europe, are pretty much gone,” Jones says.
While the new system is changing how travelers enter Europe, many Americans are also changing where they’re choosing to visit.

- Why falling oil prices haven't reflected in savings at the pump
- Runtime

- Date posted

- Description
- Oil prices have fallen below $90 per barrel following a fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran, pushing stocks near record highs. But drivers hoping for quick relief at the pump will have to wait — the average U.S. gas price remains around $4.47 per gallon, and experts say savings will be slow to arrive because today's fuel was refined from crude oil purchased weeks ago at higher prices.
The Strait of Hormuz remains closed despite the ceasefire, a critical chokepoint that handled 20 million barrels of seaborne oil in 2025 — about 25% of the world's supply. Iranian state television reports Iran will restore commercial traffic through the strait to pre-war levels within a month. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is calling for an immediate reopening. If the ceasefire holds and the strait reopens, a potential oil surplus could drive gas prices significantly lower later this year.

- Today as it Happened on Tuesday, May 26, 2026:
Iran on Tuesday denounced U.S. strikes a day earlier as a sign of “bad faith and unreliability” as negotiations continue toward a possible deal to end the war.
The U.S. military said it acted with restraint in defensively targeting missile launch sites and boats placing mines. Iran’s foreign ministry called the strikes a ceasefire violation and warned that “The Islamic Republic of Iran will leave no act of aggression unanswered.”
One of the nation's most closely watched Republican elections was underway in Texas Tuesday, where Sen. John Cornyn faced a challenge from Attorney General Ken Paxton.
The Republican Senate runoff in Texas has been heated and at times downright nasty. Attack ads have defined much of the campaign, with spots targeting both candidates.

- Description
- Iran on Tuesday denounced U.S. strikes a day earlier as a sign of “bad faith and unreliability” as negotiations continue toward a possible deal to end the war.
The U.S. military said it acted with restraint in defensively targeting missile launch sites and boats placing mines. Iran’s foreign ministry called the strikes a ceasefire violation and warned that “The Islamic Republic of Iran will leave no act of aggression unanswered.”
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard on Tuesday said it had shot down and deterred drones and a fighter jet that entered its airspace, according to Iran’s official Mizan news agency, which did not say when this happened.
Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf went to Qatar as part of the talks. The U.K. Maritime Trade Operations Center said an explosion was reported Tuesday morning aboard a tanker in the Gulf of Oman. No one was injured and there was no immediate information on the cause.

- Description
- Protesters have been clashing with Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers outside a federal detention center in New Jersey as reports have emerged of hundreds of detainees going on a hunger strike to protest conditions inside.
The clashes have been taking place outside Delaney Hall, a for-profit lockup in New Jersey owned by the GEO Group. Democrats in Congress with oversight authority who've been inside the facility say they heard directly from detainees about a lack of edible food, medical care, and medication, as well as a lack of access to attorneys.
The Department of Homeland Security is telling a different story, calling the protesters rioters who obstructed law enforcement and ignored commands to leave. DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin said in a statement that "there is NO hunger strike at Delaney Hall" and that "there are no subprime conditions."

- Description
- Foreigners in the U.S. who want a green card will need to leave and apply in their home country, the Trump administration announced Friday, in a surprise change to a longstanding policy that sowed confusion and concern among aid groups, immigration lawyers and immigrants.
The announcement from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services is the latest step by the Trump administration making legal immigration more difficult for foreigners already in the U.S. and for those hoping to come here.
But the announcement does not include details about who is immediately affected, when the process will begin or whether people already in the process of obtaining their green card will have to begin again.
"Indeed this has caused tremendous confusion. But adjustment in the country has always been discretionary, so this is not truly a change," immigration attorney Elizabeth Ricci told Scripps News. "It's just that the discretion is now being exercised. On one hand...

- Description
- New Mexico Attorney General Raul Torrez is calling on survivors of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein to come forward and help with the state's criminal investigation into Epstein's former New Mexico ranch.
Torrez shared an open letter Tuesday urging survivors to contact the New Mexico Department of Justice directly, saying their input is "essential" to the investigation into allegations of illegal activity at Epstein's Zorro Ranch before his death in 2019.
The New Mexico Department of Justice is investigating claims of burials near Zorro Ranch. New Mexico Public Lands Commissioner Stephanie Garcia Richard requested the probe after reviewing a 2019 email from an alleged former Epstein staffer that claimed two girls were killed and buried on public land leased near the ranch, about 30 miles southeast of Santa Fe.

- Description
- The U.S. military carried out strikes in southern Iran targeting missile launch sites and boats capable of laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz, according to military officials. The Pentagon described the operation as self-defense aimed at protecting American forces.
The strikes came as President Donald Trump said nuclear negotiations with Iran were proceeding "nicely" and reports suggested a possible peace agreement could be taking shape. Iranian state media reported explosions near a major military port and said four Iranian troops were killed.
Iran has vowed retaliation, raising new questions about whether ongoing negotiations can survive the latest military action.
