- Deputy Government Spokesperson, William Baloyi, says government is aware of the situation involving about 500 Malawian nationals currently being accommodated in Newlands after being relocated from Cape Town.
Baloyi says the group is being housed at a church facility while arrangements for their voluntary return to Malawi are finalised.
He adds that government departments, including the Department of Home Affairs, are working with the Malawian Consulate-General to ensure compliance with immigration requirements and facilitate the repatriation process.
Law enforcement officers have been deployed to maintain order, while government has appealed to communities to remain calm and allow authorities to manage the matter in a lawful and orderly manner.
