- France abolished slavery for the first time on 4 February 1794. A commemorative ceremony takes place every year in Paris in front of a statue honouring Général Alexandre Dumas, born a slave in Haiti, who went on to become the first Black general in the French army. Alara Koknar has this report.

- The launch of the mission to the International Space Station (ISS), in which French astronaut Sophie Adenot will take part, is scheduled for 11 February. The flight will make Adenot the second Frenchwoman in space, more than 30 years after Claudie Haigneré’s missions in the 1990s. She will also be the first French astronaut to visit the ISS since Thomas Pesquet’s Alpha mission in 2021. During her nine-month stay, she will conduct nearly 200 scientific experiments in microgravity.

Aboard an environmentally friendly vessel, the Polar Pod / Perseverance mission will collect a huge quantity of data that will provide much-needed evidence to defend the efficacy of existing marine protected areas (MPAs) and advocate for new ones.

The total journey will take 18 minutes compared to around 40 minutes by bus or car, connecting the isolated neighbourhoods to the Paris metro's line 8. It is the longest urban cable car in Europe, 4.5 kilometres with five stations, according to Arnaud Crolais, technical director at IDF Mobilités.

In October 1995, Swiss researchers Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz detected the first exoplanet orbiting a sun-like star—51 Pegasi b—using the Observatoire de Haute Provence's 193cm telescope.
