- Records fell, champions were crowned and several local athletes stood atop the podium Thursday as Day 2 of the NSAA State Track and Field Championships wrapped up Class A and B competition at Burke Stadium.
Central City senior Wyatt Dent delivered one of the meet’s signature performances, breaking the Class B meet record in the boys long jump with a leap of 23 feet, 7 1/4 inches. The mark also set a new school record for the Bison.
“It feels great,” Dent said. “I honestly wasn’t doing good all season and just kind of popped off the last jump of the year.”
Dent later added another gold medal by defending his Class B boys 100-meter title in dramatic fashion. He edged Scottsbluff’s Charlie Selzer by one-hundredth of a second, crossing the finish line in 10.79 seconds compared to Selzer’s 10.80.
“I got to do what I gotta do and push myself to beat everybody else and remain the champion,” Dent said.

- OMAHA, Neb. — Lexington’s postseason Cinderella run came up just short Wednesday night as top-seeded Gretna defeated the Minutemen 8-2 in the Class B state championship match at Morrison Stadium.
The sixth-seeded Minutemen reached the title game after pulling off two major upsets during the state tournament, but Gretna’s high-powered offense proved too much in the second half as the Dragons captured their fourth state championship in program history.
Gretna struck first early in the match when senior Elijah Fulton headed in his 17th goal of the season to give the Dragons a 1-0 advantage.
Lexington answered quickly behind Alexander Barraza-Sands, who blasted in a long-range shot for his fifth goal of the season to tie the match at 1-1 and energize the Minutemen crowd.

- Several local athletes reached the podium Wednesday during Day 1 of the Nebraska State Track and Field Championships, highlighted by state titles from Grand Island Northwest’s Amrae Krafka,, Aurora’s Jayden Slegel and Hastings’ Sophia Reynolds.
Krafka captured the Class B girls pole vault championship after clearing 12 feet, 6 inches to secure gold and avenge a runner-up finish from last season. The Nebraska commit said the victory was years in the making.
“It feels amazing,” Krafka said. “I’ve been working at this for pretty long. State has been one of my kickers for the past four years. This feels really, really good.”
Aurora senior Jayden Slegel also finished atop the podium, winning the Class B boys triple jump with a leap of 47-4 1/4.

The Huskers finished the regular season 41-14 overall and 23-7 in conference play, setting a program record for Big Ten victories in a season. Nebraska also recorded eight series sweeps during the year and enters the tournament playing some of its best baseball of the season.

With the win, the Huskers extended their win streak to 23, which ties the school record for consecutive wins. Nebraska now sits at 48-6 on the season, while GCU fell to 53-9.
Hannah Coor posted two hits and an RBI for the Big Red offense, while Jordy Frahm and Bella Bacon each added a hit.
Frahm (19-4) earned the win in the circle after tossing 16 strikeouts, which tied her career high. She allowed only one hit and no runs, along with no walks.

Hosting a regional for the first time since 2013, the top-seeded Huskers were tested early by a confident Coyotes squad that refused to back down.
The game began as a pitching duel between two Nebraska prep standouts — Gretna native and Big Ten Freshman of the Year Alexis Jensen for Nebraska and Lincoln product Madison Evans for South Dakota. Both pitchers carried no-hitters into the fourth inning.

Libero Lexi Rodriguez and former outside hitter Madi Kubik-Banks were both named to the U.S. Women’s National Team 30-person preliminary roster for the 2026 Volleyball Nations League. The US coaches will eventually cut the roster to 14 players.
This roster is an important step toward the LA 2028 Olympics, with Team USA using the summer to evaluate talent against elite international competition at VNL this summer. Team USA looks to improve on their 2nd place finish at the 2024 Olympics. Italy beat them in straight sets in the title match.

The No. 2 Nebraska softball team won its second Big Ten title of the season, notching a 7-2 victory over the No. 6 UCLA Bruins in the 2026 Big Ten Tournament Championship on Saturday afternoon in College Park, Md.
Nebraska also won the 2026 Big Ten regular-season title, as it posted a 23-1 record in Big Ten play this season. This is the Huskers’ second Big Ten Tournament title since joining the conference, as NU also won in 2022. A three-run homer from Dylan Carey ignited a seven-run eighth inning in No. 25 Nebraska’s 15-11 victory against Iowa in front of a season-high crowd of 7,773 on Saturday afternoon at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park.
Saturday’s attendance of 7,773 ranks 22nd all-time in ballpark history and is the Huskers’ largest home crowd since 2008.
Nebraska (36-14, 19-7 Big Ten) scored 15 runs on 16 hits and one error, while Iowa (29-20, 12-14 Big Ten) tallied 11 runs on 13 hits.

The Stars had a chance to advance to the state championship but ran into a strong Badgers squad on the road in the Omaha metro area.
Kearney Catholic kept the score close, only down 2-0 at half.
Despite the efforts from Slack and the Stars, Bennington pulled away late to secure the win 7-0 and advance to the state tournament.
“The conversation at the beginning of the year was to work as hard as we could and get the outcome we wanted,” head coach Luke Jatczak said. “Making it to the district final with this group was a dream come true. I couldn’t be prouder of them.”
