But years of negotiations among the basin states have not produced a long-term agreement on who should cut back, and by how much, leaving federal officials to determine the next steps.

AMR|Medic West representatives said the local ambulance company has seen an increase in emergency calls over the last two weeks, coinciding with a sharp uptick in near-record temperatures. The company is responding to about 30 more calls than usual during that period, with heat illness and burn injuries cited as two of the main drivers.

Lazaro Farias said his wife first noticed movement in their driveway around 8:30 p.m. and saw police vehicles were nearby. When the couple checked their security cameras, they saw two men hiding behind their parked cars.
"I went upstairs to grab my firearm because I didn't know if they were going to try to come inside or not,” Farias said. "Called the cops, let them know that we think we have the people that you know you're looking for.”

Allysandra Blea stood as Judge Jacqueline Bluth ordered her to spend five years to life behind bars for the death of 23-year-old Mark Gaughan.
Blea pleaded guilty back in May to charges of involuntary manslaughter and first-degree kidnapping.
Authorities said Gaughan was taking photos of Blea as she posed with a gun. During the photo shoot, the gun went off and fatally shot Gaughan.

One traveler, Trish, said she was caught off guard when flight attendants announced that the heat meant weight restrictions and that about half the plane would need to get off.
“We got offered $2,500 to volunteer to deplane because of weight restrictions due to the weather, so that's something I've never experienced before,” Trish said.
Trish arrived at Harry Reid International Airport at 1 p.m. on Friday but did not make it back home until Saturday.
