At the end of last year, Sheriff Kevin McMahill highlighted a nearly 60% decrease in officer-involved shootings compared to previous years. However, that total has already been reached by June.
"It's not an anomaly to have officer-involved shootings," said Steve Grammas, president of the Las Vegas Police Protective Association.
Grammas said he has responded to the scene of all seven officer-involved shootings this year and noted that each incident involved armed suspects.

Details from police reveal LVMPD's Fusion Watch was notified of a possible stolen vehicle near East Flamingo and Linq Lane at approximately 5:37 p.m. Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the suspect fled at a high rate of speed which led to a police pursuit.
The pursuit ended in the 500 block of Miller Avenue. Police claim that at this point, several occupants from the vehicle got out and tried to flee the scene.

The locals-focused casino operator, which employs nearly 10,000 people, will celebrate its 50th anniversary at Palace Station. The official anniversary date is July 1.
Frank Fertitta IV said the company plans a “thank you” celebration that will include fireworks and special perks for employees, while also serving as a moment to reflect on the company’s roots.

A family member shared with News 3 that the victim was 31-year-old Brandan Lucas. His mother, along with his cousin, Shekira Wirght drove to the parking lot outside of the business by Lake Mead Boulevard and Rainbow Boulevard on Thursday. They came to pick up Lucas’ car that was in the parking lot outside of the store, according to Wright.

- Nearly four years after Metro Police Officer Truong Thai was shot and killed while responding to a domestic disturbance call, his family says they are still searching for closure and justice and continues to push for the death penalty for the man who killed him, even after a plea agreement removed that option.
“When Officer Truong Thai died, we died with him; he didn't die alone,” said Betsy Thai, the officer’s younger sister.
Officer Thai was shot and killed on October 13, 2022, while responding to a domestic disturbance call. Body camera footage shows the moments Officer Thai was attempting to stop the suspect, 24-year-old Tyson Hampton, before Hampton drove away and pulled out an AK-47-style handgun.

- As summer approaches, Las Vegas casinos and resorts downtown and on the Las Vegas Strip are rolling out staycation deals aimed at locals looking for a getaway without the cost of airfare or long road trips.
UNLV College of Hospitality professor Amanda Belarmino said staycations can deliver the same mental break many travelers seek from a traditional vacation. “You really do get that sense of well-being and escapism that you get in a full vacation,” Belarmino said.
Belarmino said the appeal is also financial, especially as people weigh the cost of gas and plane tickets. “The staycation gives you the opportunity to be that tourist in your own hometown, to experience something that maybe you have read about and wanted to do but have not been able to,” she said.

- As triple-digit temperatures settle into Southern Nevada, nonprofits are seeing more families struggle to keep up with rising electricity bills as air conditioners work overtime.
The United Labor Agency of Nevada (ULAN) says requests for utility assistance are increasing as many residents face higher monthly expenses while already dealing with rising costs for groceries, gas and other necessities.
"What we see a lot in the summer is people are coming in with really high electric bills," said Evelyn Valencia, executive director of ULAN. "Oftentimes what we're seeing, it really devastates those who are on fixed incomes."

- The Spring Valley Area Command continues to record more traffic crashes than any other Metro Police patrol zone in the Las Vegas valley, according to newly released department data.
As of June 14, Metro reported 1,036 crashes within the Spring Valley Area Command this year. That is nearly 150 more than the South Central Area Command, which had the second-highest total at 888 crashes.
The Spring Valley Area Command, located west of the Las Vegas Strip, stretches from Sahara Avenue south to Warm Springs Road and is generally bounded by Durango Drive and Interstate 15.

At Baker Park near downtown Las Vegas, Haden spent part of the day at the soccer-themed splash pad. “It is very cold today. Yes, I like it,” he said. Asked what is the best thing about summer, Haden said, “That there is no school.”
For Haden’s mom, Diamond, the break from school means more time together. “We spend all our time together. We just go out to the parks, to the splash parks, or to the pools just to spend time together,” she said.
