Nearly 2 years after the destructive Davis Fire in Washoe Valley, Washoe County officials hope to have the campground reopen by the end of year.
The fire, which burned nearly 6,000 acres and 13 residential structures in September 2024, destroyed power infrastructure nearby and, therefore, also impacted the ability to get water to the campground. It has been closed to the public since.

- Tenants at the South Peak by Vintage Apartments on South Meadows Parkway just got some bad news: their rent is going up $164 a month after a $220 per month increase last year.
On top of that there's more bad news that they can see with their own eyes: the trash is piling up on the property and pouring out of the small dumpsters that are set up in several locations. Bags of trash and visible garbage have spilled on to the surface of the parking lot on the property.
Residents say they're too afraid to speak up publicly for file complaints. They're concerned they could be evicted if they do.
Management at South Peak by Vintage did not respond to my questions for this story but Northern Nevada Public Health did receive a complaint and their staff made a site visit this week. There's no word yet on what their findings were or if they plan to take any action.

Cheatgrass, an invasive plant common across the Great Basin, dries out early and can fuel larger wildfires, making it harder for native vegetation to return. UNR postdoctoral scholar William Richardson said the plant helps create a self-reinforcing cycle.
“Cheatgrass grows, it creates more wildfires, that allows more cheatgrass to grow, and it becomes a bigger and bigger issue. That’s why we’re seeing all these mega fires spreading across the Great Basin,” Richardson said.
The challenge continues after flames are out. In Nevada’s arid climate, native plants can struggle to reestablish, while cheatgrass often returns quickly.

- The Reno Fire Department (RFD) responded to 15 fires on the Fourth of July, and authorities say 13 of those were related to fireworks.
Dispatch took 600 calls from 911, and RFD responded to 140 to 145 calls. Reno Fire Chief David Cochran said RFD typically responds to 115 calls in one day.
"This weekend, July 4th, we were quite busy. And that's pretty normal for us to see that call volume go up. It's not all fireworks related, but it's largely related to fireworks," Chief Cochran said.
He confirmed they had one call related to a professional fireworks show, which was the Grand Sierra Resort’s (GSR) 4th of July firework display.
"The message we really want to get out is that even though you're enjoying the holiday, you can do it responsibly without setting off your own fireworks," Chief Cochran added. - Nevadans will only vote on two statewide ballot questions in the 2026 general election as voters are asked whether to give final approval to two Constitutional amendments that already passed the first time in 2024.
The electorate will again consider whether to impose voter identification requirements and enact an amendment enshrining the right to abortion in the Nevada Constitution.
It comes after several other possible ballot questions — dealing with transgender student athletes, redistricting and other topics — failed to qualify before the late June deadline.
Voters approved both measures by wide margins two years ago, with abortion protections passing by nearly 29% and voter ID passing by over 46%.
Despite being the only two measures to qualify, they will again be listed as Question 6 (abortion protections) and Question 7 (voter ID) as to not confuse voters.

- Washoe County staff are currently drafting amendments to the county master plan aimed at mitigating the effects of extreme heat, following the passage of Assembly Bill 96 in the 2025 Nevada legislature.
The measure, backed by almost exclusively Democrats but signed into law by Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo, requires Clark and Washoe counties to adopt comprehensive heat mitigation plans, which must include public cooling areas, enhanced access to drinking water and shaded areas with native trees.
The goal is to minimize the urban heat island effect, which can make a city's core hotter than outlying areas because of concrete and a lack of shade trees.
It comes as Reno has been named the fastest warming city in the U.S. multiple times in recent years, with the average temperature in the Biggest Little City rising nearly 8 degrees since 1970.

The two groups say the point of the watch parties is to bring the local soccer community together and build excitement for Reno’s future professional soccer stadium planned for southeast Reno.
Matches are shown on the venue’s large screen above the main stage when available. If the stage is being used for another event, the match will be shown on another large screen within the market.
Reno Pro Soccer will host information tables and prize giveaways beginning one hour before each match’s kickoff

- News 4-FOX 11 was sent this video by a viewer, describing that she and her partner were watching the University of Nevada, Reno's drone show from a North Reno hill, when beside them - people launched illegal fireworks.
She then says, the people who launched the fireworks ran off once a fire sparked and ignited on brush.
Reports of the fire first came out around 10 p.m., near Truckee Meadows Community College on Dandini Boulevard.
According to reports made to police and fire crews, the fire was potentially caused by illegal fireworks.

This video was sent to us by a viewer.
Reports of the fire first came out after 9 p.m., and while the GSR continued to launch fireworks over Grand Bay.
It's unknown how large the fire was or if anyone was hurt. It is also unknown if the GSR's fireworks directly caused the blaze.
