- The Reno Police Department assisted the Nevada Department of Wildlife with a bear sighting near Fourth Street and Keystone Avenue on Thursday, prompting authorities to ask the public to stay out of the area while crews worked to safely contain the animal.
The bear had climbed into a tree near a trailer park, where NDOW biologists and game wardens monitored the situation and worked to safely guide it down.
The bear later came down from the tree on its own and entered a culvert trap without incident.
NDOW staff secured the bear and transported it for processing to determine its age and sex and preparing for it's release.

Rain Enhancement Technologies (RET) is exploring the possibility of bringing its system to Nevada after conducting projects in Utah. Unlike traditional cloud seeding, which disperses silver iodide particles into storm clouds to encourage precipitation, RET's technology relies on electrically charged negative ions.

- The City of Reno has sworn in Corey Solferino as the new Reno Police Department Chief.
He was sworn in just before noon today during the Reno city council meeting.
His confirmation comes after he was named the new acting police chief earlier this month - after Chief Kathryn Nance, Assistant Chief Oliver Miller, and Assistant Chief Anthony Elges were terminated.
Back in March - Solferino, Undersheriff with the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, was named interim chief after Chief Nance and five other officers were placed on paid administrative leave. If the Reno City Council ratifies the contract on May 20, Solferino will be the new RPD Chief. He could be sworn in that day.
The Nevada Department of Public Safety had began an independent investigation into potential misconduct involving City of Reno policy.

- The Washoe County District Attorney has filed notice that they intend to seek the death penalty against Nicholas Loving in the death of his 5-year-old daughter, Izabella “Izzy” Loving, alleging she was abused and neglected for years before she died April 3, 2025.
The Washoe County DA's office said Izzy was “subjected over an extended period of time, approximately two and a half years, to repeated abuse, neglect, isolation, deprivation,” including “the withholding of necessary medical care,” which prosecutors contend ultimately resulted in her death on April 3, 2025.
Nicholas Loving was arrested that day and initially charged with child abuse involving substantial bodily harm. As the investigation progressed, prosecutors said he was also charged with first-degree murder.

Hundreds of voting machines inside Washoe County’s new election warehouse are undergoing what officials call “logic and accuracy” testing ahead of Nevada’s June primary election.
Registrar of Voters Andrew McDonald said the testing, which is also happening statewide, is meant to verify every machine is functioning properly before voters head to the polls.
McDonald said the goal is to ensure voters have confidence in the equipment and the election process. “To ensure that it has integrity and confidence and that people understand that we test all this for securing the election process and equipment before any votes are ever cast on there so folks understand that our equipment has the integrity,” he said.
Washoe County is also rolling out a new voting system from Liberty Vote.
