- Description
- A feat of engineering born out of desperation in Nevada’s booming mining era is now welcoming visitors for the first time.
Built during Nevada's mining boom, the Sutro Tunnel was designed to drain water, improve ventilation and transport ore through the Comstock Lode, one of the richest silver-mining districts in U.S. history.
“Essentially, they're drilling all these shafts and they're giant wells. They just kept filling up with water, having to bale them out,” said Spencer Davidson, caretaker of the Sutro Tunnel. Davidson said heat and airflow underground were also severe problems. “Ventilation was a huge, huge issue. And not only that, the mines were upwards of 130 degrees,” he said.
Without a solution, many of the Comstock's richest mines were becoming nearly impossible to operate. Prussian engineer and immigrant Adolph Sutro proposed a nearly 4-mile-long tunnel to drain water from the mines. Davidson said the water miners faced was n...

- Description
- As the United States prepares to celebrate its 250th birthday, new polling is renewing debate over civic education and whether younger Americans have a strong understanding of the nation's founding principles.
A recent Gallup survey found that 58% of Americans say they are proud to be American, down from 87% in 2001. Among Generation Z, that figure drops to 41%, raising questions among educators and policymakers about how history and civics are being taught.
Speaking with The National News Desk, Education Freedom Foundation founder Erika Donalds said the country's semiquincentennial should serve as more than a celebration.
"It's also a wake-up call for us as Americans," Donalds said. "We obviously have not done a good job of teaching the next generation why our foundation is what it is, why we have the rights that we have, and how to defend those rights."
Donalds argued that a stronger emphasis on civics education is necessary to help studen...

- AMERICA 250: Maryland's Liberty Tree keeps the spirit of the Revolution alive
- Runtime

- Description
- Even though Maryland’s Liberty Tree is no longer standing tall, its roots are still keeping the spirit of the Revolution very much alive.
Before the American Revolution, Liberty Trees served as gathering places where patriots protested British rule. In Annapolis, one tree became the rallying point for Maryland’s own “tea party,” when protest over a tea ship ended with the vessel being burned.
Scott Watkins of the Sons of the Revolution shared how roots from Annapolis’ last standing Liberty Tree were preserved after Hurricane Floyd forced the 400-year-old tulip poplar to be removed in 1999.
Our video above looks at how pieces of those roots live on in historic objects, including crosses gifted to Pope Francis and King Charles III, and a gavel now tied to Maryland’s Old Senate Chamber.

- Description
- Plans to build a walkable “Downtown Damonte” district in south Reno are facing another delay as a final floodplain mapping review keeps major construction from moving forward.
The long-planned project is envisioned as a town center near Damonte Ranch Parkway and Steamboat Parkway, with restaurants, shops, offices, housing and community gathering spaces.
Developer Perry Di Loreto said in November that the project was back on track after environmental issues that had delayed construction for more than two years were resolved.
“We're pleased to say that these all have been taken care of and resolved in our favor. And we are now getting ready to move ahead,” Di Loreto said.
Di Loreto said crews would begin with infrastructure work first, with hopes of seeing buildings go vertical by the summer of 2026.
“My goal would be by this summer, coming up in the summer of 2026... there's a significant amount of civil engineer...

- Description
- One Democratic senator has proposed a bill to implement what he calls "A living wage for all."
The idea has received mixed reactions from both locals and experts.
"In the most affluent, most powerful country in the world, if you work full time, you should be able to pay your bills," said Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy.
Murphy has recently put forth a bill that, if passed as currently proposed, would triple the federal minimum wage.
Since 2009, it's remained steady at $7.25. But through Murphy's Living Wage for All Act, the minimum wage would balloon to $25 an hour.
Any changes wouldn't happen overnight. Companies with 500 or more employees would have five years to make the increase, while any smaller businesses would have until 2039.
Here in Nevada, the minimum wage is above the federal minimum at $12 per hour. When asked about the potential federal increase, UNR economics professor Elliot Parker said he's ...

- Description
- The first phase of the major U.S. 395 widening project to and from the North Valleys is nearing completion in the next month or two, according to Nevada Department of Transportation officials.
Phase 1 is a $185 million project to widen the busy corridor from two to three lanes from McCarran Blvd. to Golden Valley — a stretch which now sees at least 50,000 vehicles per day.
NDOT assistant district engineer Andrew Lawrence told News 4-Fox 11 the project is 95% complete and expected to be substantially complete around the end of summer.
"We have one more closure pour to do on the outside widening of one of the bridges and that kind of ties the new widened structure in with the old structure. So that's going to happen here in the next week," Lawrence said.
"(That) will get us kind of to the finishing touches, which is to put those finishing overlays on the bridge structures, permanent striping, signs, all the kind of final work that we'...

- Officials say most of the fireworks set off in Washoe County are legally purchased on reservation land.
It’s illegal to transport them, possess them or use them in the county but officials do not do targeted crackdowns due to lack of staff.
In Wadsworth, about 30 miles east of Reno, many of the customers buying fireworks were not from the reservation, including drivers with California license plates. People buying fireworks there said they were from Reno and Sacramento, among other places.
“Anytime they take them out of those areas where they bought them or where they aren’t going to the designated place to use them. Then we run into illegal possession of fireworks as soon as they step off of those locations where they bought the fireworks,” NHP Trooper James LaRose said.
Both Reno Fire and Nevada Highway Patrol stressed the issue is not where fireworks are sold, but what people choose to do after buying them.

Buckheart and fellow co-owner Kurt Stitser launched a website where they list several of what they call myths and facts about a relocation, including details about the site becoming a privately managed public space.
They point to similarly managed spaces in other cities, like Millennium Park in Chicago and Bryant Park in New York City.
"Managed by private businesses, but they're still owned by the city... We're still keeping that public access, people can come in, the river access, art, it's all going to be still managed the same way,...

- Description
- Washoe County home prices hit a new high in May as would-be buyers continue to compete for a limited number of listings.
New data from Sierra Nevada Realtors shows the median sales price of a single-family home in Washoe County reached a record $635,000 in May. Mortgage adviser Stephanie Hanna of Omega Mortgage Group said, “The all-time high right now for home prices really is coming from supply and demand.”
Even as prices climb, the number of homes for sale remains low. Inventory is down nearly 25% from a year ago, and countywide there is less than two months of housing supply available — well below what’s considered a balanced market.
Hanna said demand has remained steady. “We’re still continuing to see buyers come into our area. First-time home buyers are now ready to buy. So there’s just not enough supply to keep up with the demand for Reno Sparks,” she said.
The data also shows Reno remains more expensive than Spa...

- Sparks considers making city attorney position appointed instead of elected

- Description
- The city of Sparks may once again attempt to change the city attorney position to be appointed instead of elected despite voters opposing the move three separate times at the ballot box in recent decades.
The possible change was discussed at the Sparks City Charter committee meeting this week as its members determine which city charter changes to pursue in the 2027 legislature.
Currently, the city attorney is elected by the voters to serve a 4-year term. But under the proposal expected to be considered during a July meeting, the position would be appointed by the mayor and confirmed by the city council.
To remove the city attorney, it would require four votes between the mayor and five-member city council.
It comes after Sparks voters have voiced their preference for the existing structure repeatedly. In 1974, 1991 and 2018, Sparks residents voted in favor of keeping the position elected.
That position has prevailed by wi...

- A puzzling shooting case at a campus housing complex is raising more questions as those in charge refuse to discuss it in public.
21 year-old Wyatt North died when he was shot during a scuffle that broke out at the Highlands Apartments in October.
Wyatt's family says he was shot six times by a man who claims he acted in self-defense.
"None of it adds up," said Wyatt's brother Dalton.
Reno Police did not return calls for this story but according to Wyatt's family, police tell them it's a heart wrenching case and say they've spent countless hours investigating.
But no charges have been filed.
The man who shot Wyatt has told police that he fired because Wyatt was choking him. And with no other witnesses his account is the only one police have to go on.
But Wyatt's family questions why the shooter fired six times, and if he truly was defending himself.
"Six shots, only one of them, from ...

They bought tickets online through SeatGeek, but about an hour before the match, Mathi said they received an email saying the tickets would not work.
“We flew out to Houston for the game, and about an hour before the match, we got an email saying our tickets wouldn't work. They were basically canceled. We kept getting told, ‘Just wait. Sometimes the tickets get released a couple hours before the event, maybe even right before it starts,’” Mathi Ott said.
Mathi said the original purchase was refunded to his mother’s credit card, but the pair was already at the stadium gates and needed another way in. With no tickets available on...

- Description
- As Reno-Tahoe International Airport continues to grow, airport leaders are making another adjustment to parking in an effort to accommodate both employees and travelers.
The airport is relocating some employee parking to a lot on property leased by the Nevada Air National Guard. Airport officials say the move will free up about 200 parking spaces for the public while moving employees closer to the terminal.
Because the lot is located on a military installation, employees assigned to park there must complete additional access requirements. Those include a background screening, fingerprint verification for a federal access card and an Anti-Terrorism Level 1 training.
Airport leaders say many of the employees selected for the lot already hold airport security badges, making them more likely to qualify for base access.
"The Reno Tahoe International Airport is very space constrained," Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority spokesperson Jena Esposito...

- One week after flash flooding sent mud and debris rushing toward Hidden Valley, the cleanup continues as victims assess the damage and face difficult questions about their next steps.
Jim and Caroline Rich, homeowners on Pembroke Drive for 13 years, are grappling with whether to salvage their home or demolish it and sell the property.
In a tour of the damage Friday, Jim told News 4-Fox 11 their house is still under multiple feet of mud — one contractor estimated it would cost over $100,000 just to shovel all the mud out.
Rich said he and his wife were home on June 19 when the rain started to fall in the hills above Hidden Valley. Suddenly, he heard what sounded like a jet engine landing on their house and realized a flash flood was coming.
"Then I saw the fence behind my house, which is about 8 feet above my house, just burst open and a wall of rock and water came rushing down on us. I hollered at my wife and I said 'We gotta get ou...

- Description
- The U.S. military carried out strikes against targets in Iran on Friday in response to what officials said was an Iranian drone attack on a commercial cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz.
Less than an hour before the news broke, President Donald Trump told reporters they would "find out" if Iran will "face any consequences" after the attack.
"I don't like the fact that they took a shot yesterday -- actually, four. We knocked down three -- at a ship. Not an allied ship, but a ship. A very expensive ship," Trump said during a news conference on Friday. “And it was fine. But it took a little beating. They shouldn't be doing that. So, you'll find out."
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said the strikes were launched after four Iranian drones targeted a Singapore-flagged cargo vessel in the strategic waterway on Thursday. One drone struck the ship's upper deck, causing damage, but no reported injuries, while U.S. forces shot down the remaining three dron...
