- A revolutionary idea born in Nevada more than 150 years ago helped create what many consider one of America’s most iconic garments: the modern blue jean.
“The Silver State, riveting is where it all began,” said Tracey Panek, director of archives and historian for Levi Strauss & Co.
The year was 1868 when Jacob Davis, a Russian immigrant who worked as a tailor across several states in the 19th century, moved to Reno and eventually opened his own tailoring business along North Virginia Street. Davis made supplies such as tents, blankets and other materials for laborers working in mines and railroads.
“Jacob Davis was a customer of Levi Strauss and came up with the idea of riveting trousers. It was the birth of the modern blue jean,” Panek said.
Panek said the invention traces back to an effort to create something practical and durable. “The story of the invention of the modern blue jean begins with a horse blanket and the id...

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to the 2000 block of Loan Mountain Street around 3:30 p.m. on May 31 for a report of a child custody dispute. Deputies met with a woman who told them she had allowed Meithof to stay with her overnight so he could visit their 5-year-old child.

Investigators said patrol deputies reviewed local traffic and Flock camera information and located Meithof’s red Jeep Grand Cherokee driving southbound on Highway 395, passing old Clear Creek Road at 4:36 a.m.

- Description
- In Nevada’s high desert, water is everything.
For generations, farmers and water managers have relied on meters, manual reporting and field monitoring to understand how much water crops are using. But a newer technology called OpenET is giving them another option — one that works from space.
OpenET is a nonprofit platform that uses NASA satellite technology, weather information and remote sensing technology to estimate evapotranspiration, or “ET.”
That's the process of water moving from the ground into the atmosphere.
It combines two things:
Evaporation: Water leaving the soil, canals, lakes or other surfaces and turning into vapor.
Transpiration: Water absorbed by plants and later released into the air through their leaves as they grow.
“OpenET uses satellite data and remote sensing techniques in order to have an estimate of the amount of evapotranspiration occurring at the surface,” explai...

- Most college graduates spend commencement thinking about what comes next.
For 68-year-old University of Nevada, Reno graduate Billy Gilroy, the answer is simple: another degree.
Gilroy recently earned his bachelor’s degree in anthropology after stepping away from higher education for nearly 40 years.
After high school, life took him in a different direction. He got married, raised a family and spent decades working as an auto mechanic before deciding to return to the classroom.
Going back to school wasn’t easy. Gilroy said he often found himself older than his classmates -- and sometimes even older than his professors. Learning modern technology and adjusting to college life presented challenges, but he never lost his passion for learning.
His return to education began at Western Nevada College in Carson City in 2016. Gilroy credits a librarian, Dana Sturm, with encouraging him to continue his academic journey and eve...

When asked, "What happened?" Biden replied:
"I don’t know what happened. As I watched it unfold, I thought Oh my God, he’s having a stroke."

- Description
- Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent took aim at California Gov. Gavin Newsom during a White House news conference on Thursday when questioned about ongoing criticism from the Democratic governor.
"There's no cure for stupid," Bessent said.
The remark came after a reporter asked Bessest what his response is to Newsom's idea of a 100% state tax on California residents who receive money from President Donald Trump's "Anti-Weaponization Fund."
Bessent did not elaborate on his comment and ended the news briefing, as he had said the reporter's question would be the last of the day.
Last week, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) unveiled the Anti-Weaponization Fund, saying it was designed to compensate people who claim they were unfairly targeted by politically motivated investigations or prosecutions by the federal government. The program would reportedly total about $1.776 billion.
The money stems from a settlement tied to the leak of ...
