Forecasters say high temperatures this week will run 10 to15 degrees above average, with Reno expected to reach or exceed 100 degrees Tuesday through Thursday.
The heat is arriving early, and overnight temperatures are also staying unusually warm, offering little relief and allowing the region to heat up even faster each day.
At the same time, humidity levels have dropped into the single digits, drying out grasses and brush across the region.
Fire officials say a below-average snowpack and a fresh crop of cheatgrass are creating additional fuel as wildfire season ramps up.
While winds are not currently strong enough for a red flag warning, officials say it only takes one spark to start a wildfire and are urging residents to avoid activities that could ignite dry vegetation.

And to prepare for thousands of Nevadans on the grounds, the state's Department of Agriculture has been hard at work, making the outside of the livestock events center safer and more modern.
"Over the last few months, water, sewer, and stormwater improvements on this property. We've spent over $6 million so far this year in ARPA funds... We had asbestos pipes that were originally in here; all that has been removed, so the water is all safe. The sewer has been upgraded, and it's all subsurface, so you don't see it," said Department of Agriculture Director J.J. Goicoechea.

- A Carson City man has been arrested after a high-speed pursuit through the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center Wednesday morning.
The Storey County Sheriff's Office shared this video of the man driving erratically away from deputies.

A deputy tried to pull the man over on USA Parkway around 11:32 a.m. Wednesday morning.
Deputies said the pursuit posed an extreme risk to the public's safety, but they were able to stop the vehicle in a business parking lot on Britain Drive.
The driver has been identified as 28-year-old Blaze Thomas of Carson City.
Thomas allegedly told deputies he swallowed roughly six to eight grams of fentanyl following the stop.

- On Tuesday, the Washoe County School District (WCSD) Board of Trustees approved a three-year contract for its new superintendent, Tiffany McMaster. She's set to assume the role on July 8, taking over for Joe Ernst, who's retiring.
McMaster will earn an annual base salary of $287,500. There are add-ons included in the contract, which could raise McMaster's salary. If she receives a performance review of either "highly effective" or "effective," McMaster will get a 5% salary increase. There's also a longevity bonus in the terms. If McMaster stays for all three years of the contract, she'll receive a lump sum amount equal to 3% of her final year's salary.
The board voted 5-2 in favor of the contract, with opposition votes coming from trustees Beth Smith and Colleen Westlake.
