- The 1970's was an eclectic time for rock music. NBC News covered the various rock genres throughout the decade. In the mid and late 70's punk rock was the rage in Great Britain. The NBC News magazine show "Weekend" profiled the punk rock scene in the UK in a segment called "The New Elizabethans". The segment features outstanding footage of the punk rock fashion, intense club scenes, bands like "The Damned" and interviews with punk teens and "Sex Pistols" manager Malcolm McLaren . Besides the fashion and music, the segment deals with the political and cultural impact of the punk movement during the time.
On a more mellow side, the NBC News magazine show "First Tuesday" did a segment on the early years band "Chicago" in 1970. "Chicago" was often described as "a rock bank with horns". The segment looks at how the band started, their early success, and their recording and touring. Forty years later, after many lineup changes, "Chicago" is still together and performing, inc...

The National Debt Clock ran out of space for digits back in September of 2008 when the debt hit $10 trillion. Over four years later, the U.S. debt is at its $16.4 trillion debt ceiling. Though the United States is no longer on the edge of the "fiscal cliff," Congress is expected to address spending cuts to avoid a dramatic debt increase.

President Lyndon B. Johnson Signs Gun Control Bill
On October 22, 1968, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Gun Control Act of 1968, which primarily regulated interstate gun commerce and the sale of guns to minors and other groups. It was enacted shortly after the assassinations of Robert F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr. Though President Johnson did not get all of his initial provisions into the bill, it was the most significant gun legislation since the National Firearms Act of 1934.
The president said at the time "AS BIG AS THIS BILL IS, STILL FALLS SHORT BECAUSE WE JUST COULD NOT GET THE CONGRESS TO CARRY OUT THE REQUEST WE MADE OF THEM. I ASKED FOR THE NATIONAL REGISTRATION OF ALL GUNS AND THE LICENSES OF THOSE WHO CARRY THOSE GUNS.FOR THE FACT OF LIFE IS THAT THERE ARE OVER 160 MILLION GUNS IN THIS COUNTRY; MORE FIREARMS THAN FAMILIES. Jim Jones founded the Peoples Temple in Indianapolis in 1956. Twenty-two years later, on November 19, 1978, he became notorious for leading his congregants in mass suicides in his utopian settlement, known as Jonestown. 918 people - including children -- lost their lives to suicide or were murdered. Congressman Leo J. Ryan was among them. NBC News reporter Don Harris and cameraman Robert Brown, on the scene covering events, were killed on the airstrip outside of Jonestown. Much of the footage on Jim Jones and Jonestown Massacre has been assembled into a compilation reel at NBC News Archives.

Fifty years ago, at the height of the Cold War, the United States obtained photographic evidence that the Soviet Union was equipping Cuba with nuclear missiles. On October 22, 1962 President Kennedy addressed the nation about the buildup of WMDs on the nearby island, striking fear into the hearts of Americans everywhere. In one of the most dramatic scenes in United Nations history, we see U.S. ambassador Adlai Stevenson three days later, demanding an explanation from Soviet ambassador Valerian Zorin and saying that he will sit there "until hell freezes over" in order to get an answer.
