As the United States faces its first government shutdown of the 21st century, we decided to look back on the last time that this happened. The 1995-96 shutdown lasted 21 days, making it the longest in United States history. Like the current shutdown, it hinged on budgeting disagreements between a Democratic president (Bill Clinton) and congressional Republicans. While the term "Obamacare" wasn't coined until a decade after this story aired, you may recognize some familiar rhetoric from both sides in this archival Video of the Week.

This week we'd like to wish a very happy 15th Birthday to Google! By now, the company has produced a smartphone, developed a web-browser, and acquired a number of other popular websites. But this story from a 2002 edition of the Today Show introduced Google to viewers when it was simply a search engine. Here, we see co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin discuss their website, we get a tour of the Google "campus" near Palo Alto, California, and we're shown several of the many uses for such a powerful search engine. While we might not know what Google will come up with next, we hope you enjoy seeing where it all began.

It has now been sixty-one years since Richard Nixon delivered the "Checkers Speech", one of the most famous televised addresses by a politician, and one that broke several barriers. For starters, it was the most watched television event up to that point, and it's success demonstrated the persuasive nature of the visual medium. A vice presidential candidate at the time, Nixon felt this appearance on T.V. was needed to dispel rumors of scandal that threatened his candidacy. In this half-hour long spot that was broadcast by sixty NBC stations around the country, Nixon crafts a formula we still see today - the politician who can seamlessly defend his position, attack his opponents, and display his values and personality all at the same time. This 1952 appearance helped determine the outcome of an entire presidential race, and it put him in a position to one day run himself.

- As debate looms over Syria's chemical weapons stockpile, it seems possible that the Assad regime will hand over its arsenal to the United Nations for destruction. If history is any guide, this 1983 story from Today gives us a glimpse of what the successful destruction of Syria's chemical weapons might look like. Here, we see a large group of United Nations representatives gathered in a remote facility in Utah as technicians essentially incinerate nerve gas that belongs to the United States. While this didn't put an end to America's possession of chemical weapons, it demonstrates an international commitment to the abolishment of such dangerous weapons that has developed over the last half century.

- When the prison riot at Attica culminated in a violent siege between prisoners and state authorities on September 13, 1971, Gabe Pressman was outside the facility with NBC News cameras. This Video of the Week shows armed troopers approaching the prison as Correctional Services Commissioner Russell Oswald tells the press that negotiations have reached a dead end. Through this compelling archival footage from the field, we see the outrage of correctional officers after the incident left several of their colleagues dead, as well as the widespread confusion about how hostages were killed. All told, at least 40 people lost their lives in this tragic and pivotal moment in the American prison system.

In the 1990s, The Today Show ran an interview series entitled "Take 2" in which celebrities interviewed celebrities. This "Take 2" interview showcases two country music stars. Bubbly Dolly Parton interviews a shy Billy Ray Cyrus at Parton's theme park, Dollywood. Though there's plenty of serious talk regarding such topics as their collaboration on Dolly's latest single, Dolly relentlessly - but innocently - flirts with Cyrus throughout. The two obviously remained close friends since Parton later became godmother to Cyrus' famous daughter Miley Cyrus, aka Hannah Montana, who was the latest pop star to cause a stir at MTV's recent Video Music Awards.

- Ever since a witness turned up dead, the Whitey Bulger trial has been likened to a gangland crime story. Here at the Archives, we took a look back into our coverage of the recently convicted Bostonian and found something equally dramatic. Shortly before Bulger went into hiding for 16 years, NBC News ran this story, juxtaposing him with his brother William, then the President of the Massachusetts Senate. One a man of the law, the other devoted to a life of crime -- the story of the Bulger family is truly fit for a Hollywood movie.

As Iranians head to the voting stations to choose their next president, we take this moment to remember how the young theocratic democracy began in the first place. Through the lens of our Nightly News and TODAY journalists, we see how the country's politics were completely transformed in less than a year -- from Ayatollah Khomeini's return from exile and the overthrow of the Shah in 1979, to the successful elections that brought a new constitution and the country's first president. While these developments may have been overshadowed by the Iran Hostage Crisis in the United States, they nevertheless brought an extraordinary sea change in the political landscape of the Middle East.
