- The NBA playoffs are coming to an end with only four teams left battling for the coveted championship. This week we are highlighting a basketball player whose name you might have never heard, but who once held the record for most consecutive free throw shots. In 1993, the 71 year old Tom Amberry broke the world record with 2,750 free throw shots. Tom Amberry was a retired podiatrist who entertained himself by learning to free throw. By reading many books and watching numerous videos on basketball, Tom created a method that allowed him to shoot consistently and accurately each time. His personal method can be found in the book titled Free Throw: 7 Steps to Success at the free Throw Line. In this series, most teams average around 20 free throws per game, sinking around 75% of them. Let Tom show these basketball stars how it's really done!

- Description
- The first nationally televised U.S. presidential debate took place on September 26, 1960 when Vice President Richard Nixon faced Democratic challenger John F. Kennedy in the first of four debates. However, the tradition did not take hold until 1976 when President Gerald R. Ford debated Democratic opponent Jimmy Carter. Since then, the presidential debate has become a given in the more than year-long election process. And, as in American politics, the debates have become increasingly contentious.
The Nixon-Kennedy debate in 1960 set the tone for the importance of appearance. Kennedy's on-air confidence and Nixon's nervousness provided a turning point in that election. Similarly, Ronald Reagan's "Are you better off than you were four years ago?" resonated with voters in 1980 and helped put him ahead of Jimmy Carter. And in 2000, George W. Bush's "I can get it done" created an impression with voters that helped him defeat Vice President Al Gore.

- Description
- This week we are rolling back to the 90's. Inline skates, also known as "Rollerblades", became a billion dollar industry. In 1980, Scott and Brennan Olson were two hockey playing brothers who redesigned ice skates to practice hockey off-season and outdoors. They replaced the blade with wheels and added a break for safety in their parents' basement. This led them to create their own company called Rollerblade, Inc. within a year. The following clip gives you a look at the revolution of rollerblades becoming the recreational sport of the 90s. Whether we're riding leisurely, playing street hockey, or traveling from one place to another, rollerblades changed the way we spend our free time and provided a new convenient method for ground transportation.

- Description
- This footage is part of one of the most extensive coverage that exists of the filming of "Ben Hur" in Italy. The quality of the material is exceptional as the NBC News crew had full access to the film set and we see aspects of the movie shoot never seen before.
Chet Huntley introduces and narrates this humorous look at an Italian youth and his two friends who find much-needed work as extras during the filming of MGM's " Ben Hur" at the Cinecitta Studios outside Rome. This episode from the Sunday magazine show "Outlook" mixes day-in-the-life elements from the Italian neorealist movies of the late 1940s, the traditional behind-the-scenes look at a large movie production, along with a heavy dose of slapstick comedy. We follow the scripted shenanigans of the three friends as they play pranks on their fellow extras, explore the largest movie set ever built during their lunch break, and hijack one of the chariots for a brief joyride. In all, "an extraordinary day for three ordi...

- From the time he was a congressman for Massachusetts' 11th district, John F. Kennedy took time to appear on various NBC News programs. From Meet the Press to Home and The Huntley-Brinkley Report, Kennedy discussed the most pressing issues of the day on NBC.
The arc of Kennedy's career can be traced by these appearances, as we see him in the various offices he held, speaking on a wide array of topics. Among these are corruption in the Democratic Party, the United States' relationship with the Soviet Union, an escalation of troops in Vietnam, and his political ambitions through the years. There are some moments, particularly on Meet the Press, in which he is forced to defend his beliefs vigorously. At other times, he leisurely engages interviewers on the joys of public service and speculates on the future of women in politics. Nevertheless, his demeanor is always that of a collected and confident leader.

- The Documentaries of Ted Yates - August 6, 1967
NBC News documentary producer Ted Yates was no stranger to danger, known for sticking his neck out while traveling to places around the globe where conflicts were brewing or even boiling. He produced the three-part series "The Battle for Asia" which looked at Communist expansion into Thailand, Laos and Indonesia. He also documented the civil war in the Dominican Republic and the guerrilla war in Guatemala. He was working on a documentary on the Middle East when the Six-Day War broke out. Yates was filming in Jerusalem when he and his crew came under fire. He was killed by bullet from a machine gun.
Yates was a visual storyteller whose documentaries were both visceral and poetic. He knew what it was like to be in a battle zone, he had been a Marine correspondent during the Korean War. He knew how to pursue and present a story. He had honed his skills as a producer, director and writer while working with Mike Walla...

- This footage was shot in 1955 for a story by Joseph Dembo who was a reporter for WRCA-TV, the predecessor to WNBC-TV, and a Today Show producer. A few months before his death last year, he asked his son Robert, a Senior Producer at NBC News, to transfer some of his old film and audio tapes to DVD. Robert found six news reports by his father and viewing the segment on the Third Avenue El was an amazing moment for him, seeing how young his dad was. This clip features a portion of that report. Although the footage is silent, it visually relates the elevated railway's demise and the changes that were taking place in the adjoining neighborhoods. Third Avenue El service began in 1878 and was discontinued in 1955. Since then the East Side of Manhattan has been left with only one subway east of 5th Avenue, the always overcrowded Lexington Avenue line.

- When the East German government closed the border from East to West Berlin on August 13, 1961 to stop the flow of refugees to the west and began erecting a barrier of wire, NBC News was there. Concrete slabs and cement blocks supplemented the barbed wire shortly thereafter and the Berlin Wall was built.
In 1962, when some engineering students decided to dig a tunnel between the two Berlins to free a fellow student and his family in East Berlin, NBC News was there. This dramatic escape is captured on film in the NBC News Emmy Award-winning program "The Tunnel."
For close to three decades, as the most visible symbol of the Cold War, the Berlin Wall attracted visits from world leaders as well as tourists from around the globe. NBC News was there over the years. And when East Germany dissolved its Politburo in response to another refugee crisis and opened access to West Berlin on November 9, 1989, NBC News was there. - From 1952 to 1965, NBC produced a series of half-hour interviews with cultural icons in their later years. The Wisdom Series, also known as Conversations with Elder Wise Men, profiles men and women who made important contributions to society in the arts and social sciences.
These luminaries share the details of their lives, creative processes, and philosophies that helped shape their roles in our culture. Many of these figures are interviewed in their own workspaces or homes, often by people they know, giving the viewer a more intimate portrait of each progenitor's lifestyle. There is little to no b-roll and therefore few distractions from the stories. Rather, the minimalist interviews offer a more personal perspective and rare, unique instances of these people on camera.

- Late night talk shows, as we know them today, have been keeping viewers entertained through a parade of quirky jokes, comedic skits and, of course, a large variety of celebrity guests. Before NBC delivered Conan O'Brien, Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers to our television screens, The Tomorrow Show with Tom Snyder was the first late night show that followed Johnny Carson's Tonight Show on NBC in 1973. Tom Snyder was known for his big personality and hearty laugh and was frequently parodied on "Saturday Night Live" by a cigarette waving and guffawing Dan Aykroyd.
The Tomorrow Show had its own style and rhythm, keeping it distinct yet as entertaining as The Tonight Show. The smaller and quainter atmosphere did not stop host Tom Snyder from throwing difficult questions at his guests. Interviews were more personal and lengthy, allowing guests to sometimes divulge more than originally intended. The Tomorrow Show also discussed many controversial topics such as sex, abortion, pornogr...

- Description
- In 1980 NBC News looked at the presidential election process and asked "is there a better way"? Over 30 years later the issues examined in this NBC News Report by Douglas Kiker are still being discussed today—campaign fundraising, changing campaign finance laws and the influence of big money donations on elections. The program focuses on campaigns of Reagan, Carter and Teddy Kennedy in the lead up to conventions. The voting public had the many of the same complaints then as they do now—mainly that the campaign and nominating systems were not producing the best candidates to choose from at the voting booth. An interesting section of the program deals with the influence of the media on the election process, especially the media putting too much importance on early primaries and caucuses. Many thought the media had too much influence and this was a time before the media included 24-hour news channels and the blogosphere.

- This year marks a milestone for the Bush family: the 25th anniversary of President George H. W. Bush's presidency. The George Bush Presidential Library Foundation celebrated the 41st president's legacy with a series of events. One of the most closely-watched speakers was Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, whom many consider a possible frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016, if he decides to run. But George H.W. Bush's children, including of course the 43rd President, George W. Bush, have been part of their father's public image long before they had political careers of their own. In 1986, NBC's TODAY Show profiled the four sons of Vice President Bush, who was then running for President, noting that despite living in four different states, all had been backing their father throughout the election season. The five men appeared on the program to celebrate Father's Day. Gathered in front of a camera in NBC's Washington bureau, the five men shared fond memories of spe...

- Tensions between world leaders and Russian President Vladimir Putin came to a head this week, as the United States and other powers suspended Russia's membership in the G8 in response to the country's actions in the Ukraine. At his speech before the European Union on Wednesday, President Obama strongly condemned Russian leadership and warned Putin that Russia's path would lead to "serious consequences."
Though it's hard to imagine these days, American presidents did not always have such a contentious relationship with Vladimir Putin. This week marks the anniversary of Putin's formal election as the President of Russia in March of 2000. Fourteen years ago, the White House was hopeful that the new leader could steer the country toward reform. President George W. Bush met Putin for the first time at a NATO summit the following summer, very early in both men's first terms. At a press conference after the meeting, Bush was asked whether Americans could trust Russia. His answe...

On March 20, 2014, First Lady Michelle Obama arrived in Beijing for a week-long visit, which White House aides carefully note was a cultural, not political, trip. Almost twenty years ago, another influential first lady arrived in the same city for a visit that quickly did turn political.
In September of 1995, Hillary Rodham Clinton traveled to China for the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women. Ahead of the trip, the first lady's press secretary, Lisa Caputo, stressed the need to focus on women's issues in a private memo that was recently released along with other Clinton presidency documents: "Throughout your trip, it is important for us to underscore your longstanding work and advocacy on behalf of women, families and children."
In her speech to the conference on Sept. 5, 1995, Mrs. Clinton went further: As Tom Brokaw said on NBC's Nightly News that night, "In her own way, she made a direct hi...

Fifty years ago, President Lyndon Johnson declared a "War on Poverty" during his 1964 State of the Union address. Two months later, network journalists joined together to interview him for his 100th day in office. During the interview, NBC's David Brinkley got a chance to ask Johnson about how he plans to distinguish his presidency from those that came before. The President takes this opportunity to elaborate on his desire to broaden socioeconomic opportunities, and expound his fiscal and foreign agendas.

As we prepare to enter 2014, we've decided to look back at the New Year that ushered in the start of this millennium. At the time, many around the country, and around the world, prepared for major malfunctions in computer systems -- a problem known as the "Y2K Bug" -- which would arise from computers mistaking the year 2000 for the year 1900. According to the International Data Corporation, the U.S. spent over $130 billion to prepare for this possibility, and many individual Americans came up with their own contingency plans. Here, we see ordinary people stocking up at local stores as if to prepare for a hurricane, by buying extra batteries, food items, and even lamp oil. While no major problems arose from the Y2K scare, the memory of what could have happened lives on.

- This November 8, 1961 report from David Brinkley's Journal invites Marvin Glass, legendary toy designer behind Mr. Machine, Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots, Lite Brite and Operation, to exhibit his latest creations.
What Glass may have intended to be an advertisement for the upcoming holiday season turned into a critique on the noise and destruction caused by a dance party-turned warzone sequence, starring a room full of toys such as Robot Commando and Kissy, "the doll that kisses you back". David Brinkley shows no shame in his aversion for the creatures, noting that they are "driven not by the human spirit that has lived and grown for a half million years, but by flashlight batteries".
One can only imagine Brinkley's reaction to a Furby.

When Tom Brokaw toured the White House in 1993, he had a chance to sit down with administration advisor George Stephanopoulos. While the public now knows Mr. Stephanopoulos as a charismatic host of several important news shows, he was then a political strategist who helped Bill Clinton win in 1992, and who admittedly got butterflies in front of the camera when delivering press briefings. Here, he describes the feeling of being nervous when going before the press, though one can assume that he has gotten used to being in the public eye by now.

This week we honor Lou Reed, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 71. The rock pioneer and founder of the Velvet Underground sat down with the Today Show in 1986 to discuss his career, his inspirations, and his songwriting technique. A New Yorker through and through, Reed's insight into the urban art scene in the 1960s and '70s is particularly fascinating.

It has now been 30 years since NBC newscaster Jessica Savitch's untimely death. She served in several important roles at NBC News, particularly as Capitol Hill correspondent and weekend anchor of Today. A pioneer for women in broadcasting, Savitch led by example and proved that a woman could anchor an entire edition of a nationally televised newscast. Here we see her as a guest of NBC, being interviewed by Bryant Gumbel about her book Anchorwoman, and sharing her insight into the role of women and minorities in broadcasting.

For 18 years, the Kremer prize, which was intended to reward pioneers of human-powered flight, had never been won. That all changed in 1977, when a team of aeronautical engineers flew the Gossamer Condor on a Figure 8 course over the desert sands of California. NBC caught the prize-winning run of this extraordinary machine, an enormous yet lightweight contraption that is operated much like a bicycle. While its designer, Paul MacCready, would go on to innovate human flight in many more ways, it was this historic run that cemented his legacy and won him that elusive Kremer prize.

On August 21, 1966, the leaders of major civil rights organizations came together on Meet the Press for a joint discussion on the state of the civil rights movement. This rare televised gathering of so many influential leaders sheds light on the philosophies that helped shape American history in the 20th century. Here, we see these men respond to whether at that point in time, they thought the civil rights crisis was getting better or worse. The opinions heard from Martin Luther King, Stokely Carmichael, and James Meredith, among others, demonstrate the diverse approaches that these men took on the road to reaching greater equality.
