- NATO develops technology to help catch terrorists
- Date posted
- Description
- What if we could protect public spaces – airports, train stations and other transit hubs – without imposing burdensome restrictions?
Scientists from NATO and partner countries have worked together to find a new way of detecting terrorists in crowded places, remotely and in real time, without disrupting the flow of pedestrians. The DEXTER (Detection of EXplosives and firearms to counter TERrorism) Programme, as it’s known, is a flagship initiative of the NATO Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Programme.
DEXTER uses different systems that collate information in real time and then send to security operators, providing a fast and effective way of tracking and dealing with potential threats.
Once the test phase is over, the DEXTER system could be used in metro stations, train stations and airports, seamlessly improving the security of all passengers.

- Description
- The US Army deployed advanced rocket artillery to Latvia as part of a multinational exercise. The M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, or HIMARS, arrived in Latvia on 26 September to participate in Exercise Silver Arrow 22. The launchers were flown from Germany to Latvia by US Air Force MC-130J Commando II transport aircraft based in the United Kingdom. Exercise Silver Arrow 22 ran from 19 to 30 September 2022.
The HIMARS system gives NATO the ability to conduct powerful long-range precision strikes, and the US Army regularly deploys the system to the Baltics to train alongside NATO Allies. In recent years, US Special Operations Command Europe (US SOCEUR) has practised rapidly deploying the system via the UK-based Commando II transports.

- French 🇫🇷 and Norwegian 🇳🇴 soldiers swap rations 🍽 meals ready to eat | Army food taste test

- Description
- Every army in NATO has its own field ration, commonly known as MREs (meals-ready-to-eat). While perhaps not the height of culinary expression, these rations give soldiers the calories they need to power through a hard day in the field. From Ally to Ally, their contents differ in small, interesting ways.
Join a Norwegian soldier and her French counterpart as they exchange rations during Exercise Brilliant Jump 22, held in Rena, Norway in March 2022. Brilliant Jump tested the NATO Response Force’s (NRF’s) ability to quickly deploy a combat-ready spearhead battalion on short notice. France leads the NRF in 2022, and their infantry brought plenty of hearty mountain rations to see them through the long, cold days.
Being part of the NRF means being ready 24/7, 365 days a year – and you can’t do that on an empty stomach.

- We Need Some Space
- Date posted

- Description
- Space is important to everyone. We all need space in our everyday lives: apps delivering food to your door, geo positioning, real-time traffic updates. But it’s also essential for NATO’s deterrence and defence. In 2019, Allies recognised space as a new operational domain, alongside air, land, sea and cyberspace.
More than half of the active satellites orbiting the Earth belong to NATO members or companies based on their territory. Satellites provide vital information for NATO activities, operations and missions, including collective defence, crisis response and counter-terrorism.
Space can be used for peaceful purposes as well as for security and defence. But it can also be used for aggression. Satellites can be hacked or jammed, which can harm Allies’ security and commercial interests.
Space is increasingly important to the Alliance's and Allies' security and prosperity.

NATO is teaching basic evidence collection skills to police and military personnel from partner countries in Africa, in the Gulf and in the Middle East to give the trainees the basic tools to fight terrorism.
The training was organised by the NATO Stability Policing Centre of Excellence in Vicenza, Italy and was funded by the Bureau of Counterterrorism of the US Department of State. Participants came from NATO partner countries Algeria, Bahrain, Jordan and Tunisia.

This is purely defensive, and a key component of NATO's enhanced deterrence and defence posture. - NATO | Always, we are united
- Date posted
- Description
- NATO was founded over 70 years ago by nations sharing the same values of freedom, democracy and the rule of law, to prevent conflict and preserve peace. Back then, the Alliance was made of 12 nations. Today, we are 31, united by the same principles and the same core tasks: defend each other, protect each other and keep our people safe.
On the day of the signing of the North Atlantic Treaty on 4 April 1949, US President Harry S. Truman delivered a heartfelt speech in which he welcomed the founding of NATO as a new tool to shield our citizens against aggression for the generations to come.
As NATO leaders prepare to meet in Madrid for the NATO Summit while we face the most serious security crisis in decades, we look at our history to reaffirm the same core principles that keep bringing all NATO nations together, year after year.

- NATO's Multinational Battlegroups in the East of the Alliance
- Date posted
- Description
- It’s been five years since NATO deployed four multinational battlegroups to its eastern flank. The battlegroups, stationed in the three Baltic States - Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania - as well as in Poland, were one of several measures announced in response to Russia’s illegal and illegitimate annexation of the Crimean peninsula in Ukraine in 2014.
As they commemorate their fifth anniversary, the battlegroups, led by Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States, remain combat-ready, demonstrate the strength of the transatlantic bond between Europe and North America, and make clear that an attack on one Ally would be considered an attack on all.
After Russia’s unprovoked and brutal invasion of Ukraine, which began on 24 February 2022, NATO announced the formation of four more battlegroups in Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia.
This video examines the role of the battlegroups, how they train and operate, and what they bring to the Al...

- NATO Experts | What is the NATO Strategic Concept?
- Date posted

- Description
- In this episode, Benedetta Berti, Head of Policy Planning in the Office of the NATO Secretary General, explains the NATO Strategic Concept.
🗣 | Benedetta Berti:
"NATO is an alliance of 30 nations, protecting one billion citizens. To guide its actions and drive its political and military adaptation, NATO needs a strategy that assesses the security environment, explains what the Alliance’s main tasks and priorities are, and lays out how we will accomplish them. That’s why we have the Strategic Concept.
Some elements of the 2010 Strategic Concept, like the central role of the transatlantic bond to our shared security or the importance of upholding our common values, are still relevant. But it’s also showing its age, especially since the major changes in the security environment that took place since 2010.
Think of the illegal and illegitimate annexation of Crimea and the invasion of eastern Ukraine in 2014 by Russia, the rise o...

- Climate change and security | A conversation with a NATO expert
- Date posted
- Description
- The melting of the ice cap in the Arctic could lead to a competition for scarce resources, according to a NATO expert. Ahead of World Environment Day, Michael Rühle, Head of the Climate and Energy Security Section at NATO Headquarters, has given an interview where he discusses the impact climate change will likely have on our security.
Climate change will affect different places in the world at different times and to different degrees. It is a threat multiplier that affects the security of the Alliance, and its broader neighbourhood. NATO is stepping up its efforts in environmental security and environmental protection to address the impacts of the Earth’s rapidly changing climate and an increase in weather extremes. Although NATO is not the first responder for every challenge related to climate change, the Alliance has a role to play in a comprehensive response to it. Allies have recognised the need to adapt to the future operating environments that climate change w...

- NATO Multinational Battlegroup in Romania 🇷🇴 gets to work
- Date posted
- Description
- French and Polish forces deployed to Romania as part of the new NATO multinational battlegroup have been hard at work, training with Allies while demonstrating a robust deterrence presence in the eastern part of the Alliance.
Following Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, NATO reinforced its presence in the eastern part of the Alliance, establishing new multinational battlegroups in Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia. This decision is part of a package of measures aimed to strengthen NATO’s deterrence and defence posture in light of the changed security environment. France leads the NATO multinational battlegroup in Romania.
The gravity of the moment is not lost on the soldiers, several of whom said that it makes otherwise ordinary training exercises feel more significant.
Since May 1, 2022, the multinational battlegroup was set up with France as the framework nation supported by an alternating company of either Belgian or Dutch troo...

- Description
- Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine has changed the face of European security and underlined the need for combat-ready forces to be able to deploy at speed across NATO territory.
Different NATO Allies are bringing their respective expertise to reinforce the Alliance’s deterrence and defence posture. A Dutch-German Air and Missile Defence Task Force deployed Patriot surface-to-air missile systems near Sliač Air Base, Slovakia in April to reinforce defence capabilities on NATO’s eastern flank.
The Patriot systems will contribute to the NATO Integrated Air and Missile Defence System (NATINAMDS), a network of interconnected sensors, command and control assets, and weapons. These ground-based defensive systems will strengthen NATO’s ability to protect NATO territory against any air and missile threat and attack. The system enables NATO to provide continuous vigilance across NATO airspace.

Over the coming weeks, Allied and partner armed forces will conduct live-fire drills and train vital skills, making sure that they are prepared to respond to any threat or crisis – and keep NATO countries and people safe.
