- Hungary has invested heavily in a modern tracked fleet as part of its wider defence modernisation effort, ordering more than 200 Lynx infantry fighting vehicles from arms manufacturer Rheinmetall back in 2020.
In response to growing threats to security, Allied Leaders decided at the NATO Summit in The Hague in 2025 to significantly increase investments in defence, reaching 5% of GDP by 2035. This decision ensures the Alliance will keep protecting its one billion people now and in the future with enough forces, resources and capabilities.
Investing in modern capabilities plays an essential role in future-proofing NATO’s defences. The new Lynx vehicles, due to be adopted by other Allied armies as well, are now contributing to strengthening NATO’s defences along its eastern flank.
This video takes you inside this modern vehicle, through the roles of a commander, gunner and driver, and shows why upgrades like this matter for NATO’s readiness and...

- From new Ally to High North guardian, the Swedish Air Force sent six fighter jets over the skies of Iceland to keep the North Atlantic secure.
The Arctic and the High North are vital to Allied security – and that’s why the Swedish Air Force has sent six fighter jets to Iceland.
Based at Keflavik Air Base, the JAS 39 Gripen fighters are on 24-hour standby, ready to intercept any intrusions or threats to Iceland’s airspace. They’re part of Arctic Sentry, a new NATO vigilance activity initiative aimed at enhancing security in the north, helping to make the Alliance safer.
Situated in the middle of the North Atlantic, Iceland gives Allies a glimpse into the waters and airspace between Europe and North America. While Iceland has no military, Allies provide and deploy fighter jets to secure its airspace on a rotational basis. Their deployment is also part of NATO’s Iceland Air Policing mission, marking the first time Sweden has led an ...

- NATO’s multinational battlegroup in Estonia put their trench warfare skills to the test, drawing lessons from Ukraine’s defence efforts.
Facing off against a British and French opposing force equipped with Warrior infantry fighting vehicles and Challenger 2 tanks, Estonian military conscripts were tasked with defending a trench system. The exercise tested both sides: for the Estonians, it was about resilience and tactical discipline under fire; for the British and French, it was about mastering trench assault techniques and applying lessons learnt from Ukraine’s frontline trenches.
NATO’s multinational battlegroup in Estonia - one of eight Battlegroups deployed along NATO’s eastern flank - defends the Alliance against potential aggression. Led by the UK and reinforced by troops from France, Poland and the U.S., the Battlegroup trains alongside the Estonian Defence Forces to ensure that NATO’s deterrence remains credible, capable, and combat-ready. ...

- NATO’s recon soldiers have one of the most demanding and dangerous jobs in the Alliance: they scout far ahead of the main force, observing everything from terrain conditions, to weather, to the disposition of enemy forces. Pulling this off takes not just physical toughness, but the mental resilience to push through fatigue and discomfort to get the job done.
Every year, these soldiers gather in Estonia for the Admiral Pitka Recon Challenge, a gruelling four-day event that tasks soldiers with crossing 150 kilometres of terrain on foot, facing a myriad of obstacles along the way. To find out first-hand what it takes to be a recon trooper, Rob Kunzig, video producer for NATO, visited the competition, trying out some of the obstacles and realising that, as one Finnish solider puts it, it's the heart that matters most.

Russia has been testing NATO’s resolve and responsiveness along the eastern flank for many years, and its reckless and escalatory actions have been increasing in recent months. This has included a growing number of airspace violations, which risk miscalculation and endanger lives.
In September 2025, an unprecedented number of Russian drones and planes violated the airspace of several NATO Allies – including incursions of Russian drones into Polish airspace and fighter jets in Estonian airspace, which led to security consultations under Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty.
In response, NATO launched Eastern Sentry, a flexible, multi-domain activity that is enhancing NATO’s vigilance along the entire eastern flank. Through Eastern Sentry...

- At a training camp in south-east Poland, Ukrainian troops are learning how to fight and survive on the battlefield under the instruction of NATO Allies.
Camp Jomsborg was established in 2025 as part of Operation Legio, a multinational effort led by Norway to train, equip and fund Ukraine’s armed forces. Named after a mythical Viking fortress, the facility was set up by the Norwegian Army with support from several NATO Allies, including Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland, and is designed to give Ukrainian troops the battlefield skills they need to operate effectively.
Ukrainian soldiers who arrive at Jomsborg have varying levels of skills and experience. - Protecting the Alliance is no small feat – and a job that requires thousands of troops, assets, skills and expertise from across the Alliance, which all together contribute to keeping our people safe. Part of this feat is taken on by the biggest bomber planes in NATO’s arsenal – the B52s – which are keeping watch over Europe from an airbase in the United Kingdom.
These massive planes from the US Air Force are stationed at RAF Fairford airbase as part of Bomber Task Force Europe, a mission that sees them deployed to Europe on a rotational basis. These bombers are slower and less manoeuvrable than NATO’s strike fighters, but they carry the kind of firepower that can deter would-be aggressors through sheer presence alone.
During their deployment, the bomber crews learn how to fly through European airspace and work more effectively with Allied forces, both in the air and on the ground. Plus, for crew members who have never been to Europe before, the trai...

Over the last decade, NATO Allies have increased their defence spending and production, ramping up their stocks of weapons and ammunition. But we are still spending far less than during the Cold War, even though the threats to our freedom and security now are just as big, if not bigger.
While Russia’s arms industry is booming, our defence industry is still too small and too slow to meet the needs of the future. Now is the time to spend more, to accelerate the production lines and increase investments in innovation and in more modern capabilities.
As the war in Ukraine is on our doorstep and hostile actions against Allied countries are taking place, the best way to keep our people safe is to invest more, better and faster together across the transatlantic defence industry.

- NATO’s multinational forces in Bulgaria anchor the Alliance’s military presence in southeastern Europe.
Following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, a NATO multinational battlegroup was formed and led by the Italian Army, with recent troop contributions from Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Romania and Türkiye. Based in Novo Selo, the group regularly trains in combined arms manoeuvres, learning how to simultaneously use artillery, heavy armour and mechanised infantry to leverage their full combat power. If necessary, it can absorb thousands of additional troops and grow in size to a brigade.
Ready to rapidly deploy and defend the Alliance, the battlegroup is a strong symbol of assurance for Bulgarians and other Allies in NATO’s east, as well as a potent deterrent against aggression.

- Description
- NATO armoured crews from across the Alliance come together every year to compete in live-fire and tactical challenges at Ādaži Training Ground, in Latvia. During the competition they exchange tactics and deepen their ties in an event that proves their skills and put their heavy machines to the test.
The Iron Spear 2025 tank competition tested tank crews on gunnery accuracy, coordination, and combat readiness under simulated battlefield conditions - a powerful demonstration of NATO’s strength, unity, and preparedness on Latvia’s soil.
Participating nations included Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, operating main battle tanks such as the Leopard 2 and Challenger 2.
Beyond the competition, Iron Spear underscored NATO’s commitment to collective defence and its ability to operate as a cohesive force.

- NATO demonstrates new technologies

- Description
- Innovation is vital to our security. NATO armed forces must adapt to fast-changing threats and technologies. From artificial intelligence to cyber defence and space systems, emerging capabilities are reshaping the way conflicts are fought. By driving Alliance-wide innovation, NATO ensures its forces remain effective, interoperable and resilient.
At exercises REPMUS (Robotic Experimentation and Prototyping with Maritime Uncrewed Systems) and Dynamic Messenger 2025 in Portugal, NATO Allies, partners, industry and researchers came together to test drones, sensors and communications at sea, on land and in the air.
Several new projects were on display. For some, NATO’s Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic (DIANA) has already helped turn ideas into real capabilities, connecting innovators with real-world trials and making it easier for Allies to adopt new technology, work together and strengthen defence.
