- In Ukraine, drones have transformed the country’s fight for freedom. From the earliest days of the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022, drones have offered Ukrainian forces a cheap and effective way to try to level the playing field. They’ve had to innovate to avoid being overrun.
NATO is working to identify and apply lessons learned from Russia’s war against Ukraine through the NATO-Ukraine Joint Analysis, Training and Education Centre (JATEC) based in Bydgoszcz, Poland. The centre is contributing to NATO’s deterrence and defence, and increase the ability of Allied and Ukrainian forces to operate effectively together.
Separately, NATO Allies are also learning from the experience of Ukrainian veterans.

- Sabotage at sea | How NATO protects critical undersea infrastructure
- Date posted

- Critical undersea infrastructure – such as pipelines, power cables and data lines – forms the backbone of modern life, carrying essential energy supplies, enabling financial transactions and transmitting over 95 per cent of global internet traffic.
In recent years, suspected sabotage and unexplained damage have exposed the vulnerability of these vital systems, raising serious security concerns.
In response, NATO has stepped up surveillance with enhanced air and naval patrols– especially in regions like the North and Baltic Seas. NATO has also strengthened information-sharing among NATO Allies and partnered with the private sector to develop new technologies for detecting and deterring undersea threats. All these efforts are coordinated by a specialised cell based at NATO Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium. - What happens during an air interception?
- Date posted
- Description
- Air interceptions can occur whenever air traffic is flying over or near NATO’s European Allies, and is not in compliance with international aviation rules and regulations. The two NATO Combined Air Operations Centres (CAOCs) detect these activities within the framework of NATO’s Air Policing mission – an enduring peacetime activity conducted 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
If NATO’s air commanders determine that a plane is behaving unusually or unsafely by flying without an identifying transponder, or refusing to respond to hails from air traffic controllers, they can send fighters to investigate.
Those fighters scramble as quickly as possible to visually identify the aircraft and ascertain the nature of the problem. Often, a civilian or military aircraft has experienced a malfunction leading to a loss of communications. Sometimes, however, NATO aircraft intercept Russian military aircraft that have no flight plan or no radio communications with civi...

They also face the same challenges and work side by side in many domains, including crisis management, military mobility, maritime security and cyber defence, just to name a few – with the common goal of supporting international peace and security.
