- Cold, snowy environments can be unforgiving, but for Allied armies, the task of collective defence means being ready to operate in any climate. That’s why the Cold Weather Operations Centre of Excellence (COE) teaches Allied troops how to survive and thrive in the snowy woods.
The students learn how to survive the harsh Norwegian weather in mountainous terrain without the luxury of a sleeping bag, or even a tent.
The course answers an increased demand for winter survival skill sharing in the High North from Allied countries. The COE was founded by the Norwegian Armed Forces, which run it today.

- Description
- Cold, snowy environments can be unforgiving, but for Allied armies, the task of collective defence means being ready to operate in any climate. That is why the NATO Centre of Excellence (COE) for Cold Weather Operations, based in Rena, Norway, teaches Allied troops how to survive and thrive in the snowy woods.
To try what it takes to deal with these harsh conditions, we sent one of our video producers to tag along for 24 hours with a group of NATO soldiers participating in one of the Centre’s cold-weather survival courses. Deep into the Norwegian forest, facing freezing temperatures and with only a few essential tools to help fight against the cold, he tested first-hand how demanding – and unforgiving – withstanding such conditions can be.
Survival courses focus on building an experienced core group of cold-weather survivalists, who can then bring their experience back to their armies and teach others. As we face the most serious security situation in...

- Description
- What’s it like when your office is your home, and your home is a US Navy warship? Find out as our NATO video producer embarks on the USS Ross, an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, for a naval exercise.
Living on a ship means living in a confined space, eating only what’s available in the kitchen, and performing your job while keeping the ship clean. As NATO video producer Krista discovers, it’s a demanding lifestyle not for the faint of heart. But every day, NATO sailors wake up and do their jobs on ships as small as minesweepers, and as big as aircraft carriers. Their vigilance and professionalism help keep NATO safe 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
The USS Ross was one of several US Navy ships stationed in Rota, Spain as part of Destroyer Squadron 60. During its 10 years in Europe, the ship participated in NATO naval exercises and served as part of Standing NATO Maritime Group One, which is tasked with patrolling the southern seas.

- Description
- For every NATO exercise, there’s a blue team – the “good guys” who come to train and test their skills – and the “bad guys”, who put them to the test by taking on the role of the enemy.
At the US Army’s Hohenfels Training Area in southern Germany, the bad guys are One-Four - First Battalion, Fourth Infantry Regiment. Based in Europe, their full-time job is making sure NATO Allies get a bracingly realistic training experience. Far more than walking targets, One-Four’s soldiers simulate everything from conventional warfare to hybrid tactics, working day and night to keep the training audience on their toes. They make sure that NATO’s forces walk out of Hohenfels sharper and better prepared than when they walked in.
NATO video producers joined One-Four during Exercise Saber Junction 22. They signed on with the unit’s infamous Scout Platoon, which is often tasked with probing Allied defences under the cover of darkness. Over the course of 24 ...

Italian and American soldiers swap rations 🇮🇹🇺🇸
Every army in NATO has its own field ration. While perhaps not the height of culinary expression, these rations give soldiers the calories they need to power through a hard day in the field. From Ally to Ally, their contents differ in small, interesting ways.
Watch a US and Italian paratrooper swap their ration packs while on exercise in Italy. From warm pizza in a packet to ravioli in a can and toothbrushes, these soldiers may be from different continents but they find common ground in condiments.
Filmed during joint airborne operations, about 800 paratroopers from the US Army’s 173rd Airborne Brigade, the Italian Army’s 4th Alpini Paratroopers Regiment and the German Army’s 26th Airborne Regiment performed several jumps over a drop zone in northern Italy.

At the Madrid Summit in June 2022, NATO Heads of State and Government invited Finland, together with Sweden, to join NATO and since then their relationship with the Alliance became even stronger, as they started integrating into our political and military structures. As a consequence, the security of both countries has been much enhanced.
From today, 31 flags will now fly together as a symbol of our unity and our solidarity.

- 🇺🇸 US Marines and 🇫🇮 Finnish Navy hone logistics skills
- Date posted
- Description
- Logistics is the art of moving supplies and people to where they need to be. Without logistics, armies wouldn’t have fuel for trucks, parts to repair them, or soldiers to drive them. It’s a military fundamental, and that’s why NATO forces regularly practise this crucial discipline with their Allies and partners.
Recently, the US Marine Corps teamed up with the Finnish Navy to practise this crucial discipline – but with a twist. The icy, island-studded waters of the Finnish archipelago are uniquely challenging to supply lines. Working with the Finnish troops, the US Marines learned how to move supplies using helicopters, transport aircraft and small, stealthy boats, as well as the burly transport trucks they brought from the United States in cold weather conditions.
The US Marines deployed to Finland for three months last fall – the longest stint the US military’s amphibious branch has spent in Finland to date. It signals a deepening relationship wi...

These airborne operations saw paratroopers exiting the US Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft. Following jump operations, Allied soldiers exchanged jump wings and airborne badges belonging to their country, a cherished tradition among paratroopers.

This NATO battlegroup also includes contributions from other NATO Allies, including Denmark, France and Iceland.
As part of the course, the soldiers must spend two nights in the Estonian forest learning how to build camps, make fires and find food and water. The course helps the soldiers adjust to different climates and terrains and makes sure they’re ready to operate in cold winter conditions.

- Description
- One year ago, Russia launched its illegal invasion of Ukraine. As their forces continue to relentlessly attack the country, Russian officials keep spreading blatant lies and disinformation about their brutal war against a peaceful country.
Russia claimed it had no plans to attack Ukraine, and yet it did. Russia claimed it would not target civilians, while many civilians have been killed and wounded, with hospitals, homes, schools and critical infrastructure destroyed across the country. Despite the Kremlin’s continued litany of lies, denials and disinformation, their real intentions are clear for the world to see.
As Russia launches new offensives, NATO Allies stand in solidarity with Ukraine and will support Ukraine for as long as it takes.

While NATO has directly contributed non-lethal aid and humanitarian assistance, individual Allies have given the brave Ukrainian defenders the military hardware they need – weapons, ammunition, infantry fighting vehicles and tanks – to defend their homeland. While not technically an ice-breaker, the Triton has a double-skinned ice-reinforced hull so that it can break through 80 cm of solid ice – a capability it needs when operating in these chilly waters.

- The skies above Albacete, Spain roar with jet noise as NATO’s best fighter pilots take part in the Tactical Leadership Programme (TLP), a school often referred to as ‘NATO’s Top Gun.’
TLP gives an international twist to the US Navy’s Fighter Weapons School, also known as TOPGUN, a proving ground for fighter pilots who wish to test their mettle. At this course, the focus is on learning how to work together, merging tactics and capabilities to make a stronger multinational fighting force.
Over the course of four weeks, TLP students must plan, fly and debrief their missions, often on short notice. This teaches pilots to manage stress while responding to increasingly complex scenarios that factor in modern adversary tactics, like electronic warfare. Through the long days and nights, TLP forges Allied pilots into a single, multinational team, capable of taking on even the most difficult tasks.

- Description
- NATO is supporting the development of new technology designed to minimise casualties during combat operations. It involves soldiers wearing various body sensors that will help medics collect vital data and determine the extent to which a soldier may be injured more accurately than a field medic would be able to conclude.
The new technology is called the Digital Triage Assistant (DTA) system. The original concept came from a collaboration between students of Johns Hopkins University and the NATO Allied Command Transformation Innovation Hub. It has since expanded and now involves researchers from the Czech Technical University in Prague, the DefSec Innovation Hub, the Czech University of Defence and the General Staff of the Czech Armed Forces.
Footage includes scenes of a simulated attack showing soldiers wearing prototype devices. It also includes soundbites with Kristina Soukupová, President, DefSec Innovation Hub, and Major Bedrich Hyza, Chief of Training, ...

- It’s definitely one of the perks of the job. These Danish pilots fly surveillance missions off the coast of Greenland and while their primary aims are to conduct surveillance operations, inspect fishing vessels and provide better preparedness for rescue operations, one of the by-products is a window into some of the most dramatic views on the planet.
In Greenland, the distances are enormous – Greenland is 2.2 million square kilometres in fact. That’s more than five times the size of Germany. And that’s why this task requires an aircraft with a large operation radius and high speed that can also be airborne at short notice. Step forward the Royal Danish Air Force’s Bombardier Challenger CL-604, the ideal aircraft for the task.
Denmark is a NATO Ally, and its armed forces provide vital assets and capabilities to help keep the Alliance safe, including protecting the High North.

- Description
- The Patriot is a surface-to-air guided air and missile defence system currently in use world-wide including in several NATO countries (Germany, Greece, the Netherlands, Spain and the United States). PATRIOT stands for “Phased Array Tracking Radar to Intercept on Target”.
A Dutch-German Air and Missile Defence Task Force deployed Patriot surface-to-air missile systems near Sliač Air Base, Slovakia in April 2022 to reinforce defence capabilities on NATO’s eastern flank.
The Patriot systems contribute to the NATO Integrated Air and Missile Defence System (NATINAMDS), a network of interconnected sensors, command and control assets, and weapons. These ground-based defensive systems strengthen NATO’s ability to protect Alliance territory against any air and missile threat and attack. NATINAMDS enables NATO to provide continuous vigilance across NATO airspace.

- Look away now if you’re scared of heights. Fortunately, that isn’t the case for these members of the French Navy’s Special Operations Forces as they plummet out of an Atlantique 2 maritime patrol aircraft and down toward the Mediterranean Sea.
Their target landing? The Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier. If they get it wrong, they’ll be out in the cold, dark sea. But of course, they stick the landing.
Special Operations Forces (SOF) regularly train to perform these dizzying feats, which they call High-Altitude, Low-Opening (HALO) jumps. While this is a demanding task requiring precision, landing on a relatively small, moving target requires a staggering amount of skill and coordination between the ship, the aircraft pilot and the commandos.
NATO SOF operators work hard to keep themselves proficient at these highly specialised, dangerous tasks.

- In 2014 Admiral William H. McRaven (RET), former Commander of the United States Special Operations Command (SOCOM) gave an iconic speech at the University of Texas at Austin, part of which focused on why making your bed was so important.
As we begin a new year, we hope his words can act as motivation and encouragement to focus on the small things, and the big will follow.
Norwegian soldiers, part of NATO’s multinational battlegroup in Lithuania, conduct a light physical training exercise at a snowy Rukla Military Base to his iconic words.
With thanks to the Texas Exes, the official alumni association of UT Austin.

- Description
- The task of patrolling Greenland’s coastline falls to the Royal Danish Navy frigate HDMS Triton. It’s a lonely job – more so as the holidays near. That’s why the sailors celebrate with a few cold drinks, chilled with fresh ice harvested from the glacial icebergs surrounding Greenland.
Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, and the Royal Danish Navy is charged with patrolling and providing security to the territory surrounding the massive, glacier-covered island.

- NATO in 2022 - a look back
- Date posted
- Description
- In 2022, we faced the most serious security situation in decades.
Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine threatened and continues to threaten Euro-Atlantic peace and security. As we came up against this new reality, NATO stood strong.
We boosted our collective defence with four new multinational battlegroups, getting to a total of eight NATO battlegroups defending our territory from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea.
We invited Finland and Sweden to join NATO, strengthened the bond that ties Europe and North America together, and deepened the relations with Indo-Pacific partners sharing the same values of freedom, democracy and human rights.
In 2022, NATO also adopted a new Strategic Concept, setting out NATO’s enduring purpose and its fundamental security tasks, and preparing the Alliance to better address the threats of today and tomorrow.

- Jets on the flight deck - #shorts
- Date posted
- Description
- During flight operations, the deck of an aircraft carrier is organised chaos. Deck sailors – their jobs signified by the colours of their shirts – run between aircraft, telling jets where to go and hooking them up to the catapult system. White-shirted safety officers make sure everything’s good to go before giving the thumbs up. Then the yellow-shirted “shooter” gives the go-ahead, and the jets roar off the ship and into the sky.
US Navy F/A-18 Super Hornet strike fighters were turning and burning off the coast of Portugal during the first deployment of the USS Gerald R. Ford, the US Navy’s newest carrier. Unlike the other carriers that came before, it uses electromagnets to launch aircraft off the flight deck.
The USS Gerald R. Ford is the most technologically advanced aircraft carrier in the world, using everything from advanced radars over electromagnetic aircraft catapults to launch fighter jets.
Carrying approximately 60 aircraft...

- NATO Allies train alongside Lithuania's Iron Wolf Brigade 🇱🇹

- Description
- One of Lithuania’s largest military exercises, Iron Wolf, saw nine NATO Allies – Belgium, Czechia, Germany, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, the United Kingdom and the United States – gather for intense training at Pabrade Training Ground, Lithuania.
The exercise, which involved more than 3,500 troops, and armoured vehicles including German Leopard 2 tanks, tested the ability of the Lithuanian Army’s Iron Wolf Brigade to carry out defensive operations and counter-attacks. NATO’s German-led multinational battlegroup participated, as did a US Army battalion assigned to Lithuania on a rotational basis.
The exercise was also an opportunity for troops from various Allies to hone their skills and ability to work together, as well as testing their readiness to defend NATO’s eastern flank, if required.

- Bucharest NATO Foreign Ministers 🇷🇴, 29-30 November 2022

- Description
- NATO Foreign Ministers held two days of meetings in Bucharest, Romania.
On the first day, NATO Foreign Ministers met with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba to address Ukraine’s most urgent needs, as well as longer-term support. Allies agreed that continued military support for Ukraine is essential – in particular, additional air defences. Allies also announced further contributions to NATO’s Comprehensive Assistance Package, which is providing Ukraine with non-lethal aid, including fuel and generators.
Day two of the meetings in Bucharest focused on the long-term challenges posed by China, as well as on support for partners facing Russian pressure.
Foreign ministers considered China’s ambitious military developments, its technological advances, and its growing cyber and hybrid activities. Mr Stoltenberg said that the war in Ukraine demonstrated a dangerous dependency on Russian gas, and that "this should also lead us to assess our ...

- Inside the mind of a 🇺🇸 US Army Black Hawk helicopter pilot
- Date posted
- Description
- What does it take to fly the US Army’s UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter? Skill, determination and an ability to adapt to your mission, whatever it may be.
The Black Hawk is the US Army’s multipurpose helicopter, used for air assault missions, medical evacuation, troop movements and humanitarian missions, among other tasks. Its flexibility makes it invaluable on NATO exercises and operations – such as the NATO-led Kosovo Force (KFOR), where Virginia National Guard Chief Warrant Officer 2 Jennifer Gaulton serves as a pilot.
While in Kosovo, Gaulton and her fellow Black Hawk pilots have flown a wide range of missions, from firefighting and search-and-rescue to training with other NATO Allies. Here she describes what it takes to fly the Black Hawk, and why it’s such a powerful and useful machine.
The US Army forms a sizable part of KFOR’s 3,700 deployed troops, who are in Kosovo to provide a safe and secure environment and freedom of movement for...

- Get ready with a Hungarian fighter pilot 🇭🇺 #shorts
- Date posted
- Description
- A ‘G-Suit,’ lets pilots take tighter turns at higher speeds, giving them a tactical edge.
But there’s more to their outfit than fancy pants. A pilot’s jacket holds their oxygen hose and an inflatable collar to keep them afloat should they need to eject over water. The helmet keeps their head safe, while the mask helps them to breathe at high altitudes and houses a microphone for communications. Fighter pilots display patches on their uniforms – usually their national flag, and a patch commemorating their Air Policing rotation.
The Hungarian Air Force currently has four fighter jets assigned to NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission, which keeps the skies over Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania safe and secure. Air Policing is a normal, peacetime activity conducted 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This is the third time Hungary has led Baltic Air Policing since 2015.
