Description: Around 3,000 personnel from 19 NATO Allies and partners took part in the annual maritime exercise Baltic Operations, or BALTOPS, in the Baltic Sea.
This year’s exercise was the first major European maritime event since the outbreak of COVID-19 and ran from 7 to 16 June 2020. Allies and partners participated in live training events, including air defence, anti-submarine operations and maritime interdiction. To ensure the safety and health of participating military personnel, BALTOPS 2020 took place exclusively at sea.

Description: What does it feel like to freefall jump into thin air, four kilometres above the earth alongside Lithuanian Special Forces operators?

High-altitude, low-opening (HALO) freefall jumps are a useful but risky method of infiltrating Special Operations Forces into dangerous territory. By plunging from altitudes as high as 10 kilometres and opening their parachutes close to the ground, operators are able to hit small drop zones without being detected.

Description: The Boxer ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle) ambulance is an eight-wheeled multi-purpose vehicle used by the 13th Motorised Brigade of the Royal Netherlands Army as a battlefield ambulance. Its heavy armour and off-road capabilities make it ideally suited to evacuating casualties from the battlefield under heavy fire.

The Boxer ATV is a battlefield ambulance and is not equipped to respond to urban or civilian incidents due to its size and weight.

We spoke to Corporal Tim from the Royal Netherlands Army based in Lithuania as part of NATO’s enhanced Forward Presence Battlegroup. He talks about the role of the Boxer and the medical team who operate it.

Description: NATO’s enhanced Forward Presence (eFP) Battlegroup Estonia participated in Exercise Spring Storm 2020, an annual drill in which Estonia tasks its conscripts with mobilising and repelling a simulated threat. The multinational Battlegroup under UK lead is playing the opposing force, sending its armour and troops to a training ground in central Estonia.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Estonia has reduced the scale of this year’s exercise and limited it to the central training grounds. The only international troops participating come from the Battlegroup, further limiting the risk of spreading the virus.

Description: Throughout the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, NATO enhanced Forward Presence (eFP) Battlegroups maintain readiness. In Poland, soldiers with the NATO eFP Battlegroup recently conducted various tasks to try and earn the Expert Infantryman Badge. They were tested on physical fitness, first aid, weapons firing and navigation tests. The badge was contested by soldiers from Croatia, the UK and the US.

Training continues across all NATO eFP Battlegroups with troops taking special care to limit the spread of COVID-19 by wearing protective equipment and maintaining social distancing.

Description: In Taranto, Italy, a team of the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) established a cooperation with an Italian start-up called ISINNOVA that resulted in the production of 25 3D-printed connectors – on a weekly basis – converting snorkelling masks into emergency ventilator masks. These were donated to the Italian Civil Protection Department for further distribution in the hospitals that needed them most.

Now the team from the NSPA is helping with the production of 3D-printed face-shields to help protect health care workers in the local hospitals.

When he embarked on board the Spanish Frigate “Alvaro de Bazán”, deployed with NATO Standing Naval Forces, it was about a fortnight before she was due to give birth. Fortunately, he was able to disembark and be present for the birth of Victoria, their third child.

Even though she had to put her career on hold in order to take care of their children and adapt to this way of life, María feels rewarded because she believes that it allows her to see many places and gives her a chance to miss her husband when he is away. She also feels lucky to count on the support of the other spouses.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg addressed media on March 19, saying: "NATO’s ability to conduct operations has not been undermined. Our forces remain ready, and our work goes on." Description: “Jonny” wanted to fly since he was a boy growing up in the United Kingdom – and luckily, as a Warrant Officer 2 in the British Army, he gets to fly the Apache AH1. Jonny describes what it takes to fly his army’s premier attack helicopter.

The British Army deployed Apaches to Estonia in April 2019 to augment NATO’s enhanced Forward Presence Battlegroup, which is led by the United Kingdom. The attack helicopters have practised integrating with multinational forces, participating in multiple exercises. The Apache’s speed, manoeuvrability and payload make it invaluable to ground operations.

Canada’s Operation NANOOK-NUNALIVUT 2019 took place in northern Canada between 17 March and 1 April 2019. Around 500 personnel tested their Arctic survival skills and logistics including long-range patrols, ice diving and creating landing strips on the sea ice.

Five NATO Allies – Canada, Denmark, Iceland, Norway and the United States – are Arctic states, and Allies regularly work to improve their ability to operate in cold weather.

Ever since Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea and its subsequent military build-up in the Black Sea, the security situation has deteriorated. At the Warsaw Summit in 2016, NATO Allies announced an increased presence in the region.

The European Air Transport Command, in cooperation with NATO, provides this service for Allied fighters.

Footage includes shots of various fighter jets refuelling from French C-130 Hercules transport aircraft and of AWACS aircraft. Some of the shots were supplied by the French and Dutch Defence Ministries.
