- Description
- NATO is continuing to adapt to keep us safe in this decade and beyond. The NATO 2030 initiative is about making sure our Alliance remains ready today to face tomorrow's challenges.
In December 2019, NATO Leaders asked Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg to lead a forward-looking reflection process to strengthen NATO.
In June 2020, the Secretary General laid out his priorities for NATO 2030: making sure NATO remains strong militarily, becomes even stronger politically and takes a more global approach.
To support the Secretary General's work, NATO 2030 is bringing together Allied parliamentarians, civil society, public and private sector experts, and youth to provide fresh thinking on how to make NATO an even stronger Alliance.

The AGS Force has achieved Initial Operating Capability (IOC), marking a major milestone for the programme.
The RQ-4D aircraft represents the state-of-the-art in terms of high-altitude, long-endurance aerial intelligence platforms. With a range of 16,000 kilometres and a ceiling of 18,000 metres, the RQ-4D can stay aloft for more than 32 hours.
Flying from its main operating base - Sigonella Air Force Base near Catania, Italy - the five drones will support NATO operations by monitoring the ground and providing situational awareness, also known as Joint Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance, or JISR. This gives decision makers an increased tactical awareness of what’s happening on the ground, in the air and at sea, allowing accurate decision making based on rea...

Gamification can be a valuable tool in getting people to ask questions they haven’t asked before. The combination of competition, excitement and fun is crucial when training the next generation of security specialists. Through its Science and Technology Organization, NATO is working with cognitive and behavioural scientists at Atılım University in Turkey to set up simulations – from board games to future games in virtual reality – that hit the perfect pitch of learning and creativity. In the end, the knowledge and experience gained from these games will help NATO and Allied leaders make better-informed decisions on defence matters.

- NATO has a key role to play in emergency response and disaster relief. When a disaster strikes, getting an overview of the site is key to saving lives and stopping further damage. Until now, the only two options to get the big picture from far above have been aircraft or satellites, both of which are expensive and require infrastructure. But high-altitude balloons equipped with a new kind of radar promise to be cheap, rapid and fuel-saving.
In this episode of NATO Science, we travel to the University of Pisa, where NATO scientists are working on the system in partnership with the University of New South Wales in Australia and with support from NATO’s Science for Peace and Security Programme.
Footage includes images of the high-altitude balloon-borne radar system in action and scientists at work on the system.

- Spur Ride | Troops from NATO eFP Battlegroup Poland earn their spurs
- Date posted
- Description
- Last year, the 278th Armoured Cavalry Regiment of the US Pennsylvania national guard stationed at NATO’s enhanced Forward Presence (eFP) Battlegroup Poland conducted its third multinational ‘Spur Ride’. Candidates from Croatia, Poland, the United Kingdom and the United States completed multiple soldiering tasks while cold, tired and hungry to earn their silver spurs in this cavalry unit rite of passage.
The tradition of having to ‘earn your spurs’ reaches back to the beginning of the US Cavalry. When inexperienced Troopers first arrived at their new cavalry assignments, they were assigned a horse with a shaved tail. This led to the nickname ‘shavetail’ for newly assigned, spur-less soldiers.
The footage, shot prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, includes troops from NATO’s eFP Battlegroup Poland taking part in the Spur Ride and receiving their spurs.

- NATO celebrates the 20th anniversary of Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security
- Date posted
- Description
- Twenty years ago, the United Nations Security Council passed Resolution 1325, recognising that women and girls are affected by conflict in unique ways, and that women play an important role in preventing and resolving conflicts.
NATO has taken the principles of Women, Peace and Security (WPS) and applied them to all that we do – from integrating gender perspectives in all our work, to promoting the inclusion of women in Allied and partner armed forces, as well as in our civilian staff.
Join us in celebrating the 20th anniversary of Resolution 1325 on 31 October, and in the next NATO Digital Dialogue on Gender and Technology on 5 November – part of a series of events on how the WPS agenda should evolve as we continue to make our Alliance more equal and inclusive under the NATO 2030 initiative.

- NATO Standardization Agreements | STANAG
- Date posted
- Description
- From military working dog training to submarine operations and everything in between, standards are a vital part of NATO operations.
Shortly after the formation of NATO in 1949, the Military Office for Standardization was established to improve interoperability among Allied armed forces. Today it is known as the NATO Standardization Office.
States need to share a common set of standards, especially among military forces, to carry out multinational operations. By helping to achieve interoperability among NATO’s forces, as well as with those of its partners, standardization allows for more efficient use of resources and thus enhances the Alliance’s operational effectiveness.
Each NATO Ally ratifies a Standardization Agreement, or STANAG, and implements it within their own military. STANAGs cover everything from ammunition to vehicles to training techniques for military working dogs.
As the NATO Standardization Office approaches it...

#NATO2030 is about making sure that our Alliance remains ready today to face tomorrow's challenges, and how NATO will continue to keep us safe in the next decade and beyond. As the only institution that brings the nations of Europe and North America around a table every single day, NATO is well positioned to be a catalyst for positive change. To maintain our security, we are preparing for and adapting to the new conditions brought on by climate change.
