- NATO Allied chemical defence soldiers trained on live agents on a unique training course in Czechia.
Specialists from Italy, the Republic of Moldova and the United States gathered to test their ability to identify and neutralise live chemical weapons, ensuring that they have the confidence, and the skills required to respond to a real-life chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear (CBRN) attack. The NATO Joint CBRN Defence Centre of Excellence, located in Brno, Czechia, hosts the only facility that can train recruits on nerve and blister agents, from Sarin to mustard gas. After the five-day course, participants leave with greater trust in their skills and personal protective equipment.
While these weapons are rarely used, modern battlefields have seen chemical weapons deployed against civilian populations, proving that they remain a grave danger to Allied civilians and military personnel. That’s why NATO’s CBRN defence specialists constantly trai...

- NATO’s recon soldiers have one of the most demanding and dangerous jobs in the Alliance: they scout far ahead of the main force, observing everything from terrain conditions, to weather, to the disposition of enemy forces. Pulling this off takes not just physical toughness, but the mental resilience to push through fatigue and discomfort to get the job done.
Every year, these soldiers gather in Estonia for the Admiral Pitka Recon Challenge, a gruelling four-day event that tasks soldiers with crossing 150 kilometres of terrain on foot, facing a myriad of obstacles along the way. To find out first-hand what it takes to be a recon trooper, Rob Kunzig, video producer for NATO, visited the competition, trying out some of the obstacles and realising that, as one Finnish solider puts it, it's the heart that matters most.

- The meaning of Sisu | 🇫🇮 Finnish conscripts of the Jaeger Brigade
- Date posted
- Description
- Sisu is a special word in Finnish culture. While its exact definition can vary, for most it means determination and composure in the face of adversity.
For the conscripts of the Finnish Army’s Jaeger Brigade, stationed in the vast forests of Finnish Lapland, sisu is crucial. Without it, they’d find it hard to endure the freezing temperatures and austere landscapes of the Nordic Arctic. We take a look at this uniquely demanding job and the spirit of sisu of our Finnish Ally.
Finland relies on a conscription-based military system, requiring all men aged 18 to 60 to complete military service, while women have the option to volunteer. Each year, around 21,000 conscripts complete their military training in Finland. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, this number has increased – the rise largely driven by female volunteers – and Finland made the historic decision to abandon military neutrality and subsequently joined NATO in April 2023. ...

- When soldiers deploy, they leave behind their families and loved ones. The separation can weigh heavily on service members, and when the soldier finally returns home, the reunion is full of powerful emotions.
This was the scene that greeted soldiers from the US Army’s Third Infantry Division when they came home to Fort Stewart, Georgia. It followed a 10-month deployment to Eastern Europe, where they trained alongside NATO Allies and provided a strong presence in the region.
The soldiers were part of a surge of US troops to the region that began after Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014. Yet more troops flowed to Eastern Europe following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and US forces now have a more robust presence in Allied countries along NATO’s eastern flank.

Being able to face extreme weather conditions is a crucial skill to have for NATO troops, particularly in a cold weather environment. Training helps soldiers who have never had the chance to endure such harsh conditions to get acquainted with the environment, understand and overcome the challenges it poses, and get familiar with it, so they can enhance their ability to defend the Alliance’s territory in all climate conditions, should the need arise.
These courses range from basic survival skills to more advanced scenarios. Here, a group of Allied soldiers coming from France, the United Kingdom and the United States test their mettle as they face Arctic conditions for the first time in the vast, freezing ...

- Boosting defence industry makes NATO stronger and our people safer
- Date posted
- Description
- Over the last decade, NATO Allies have increased their defence spending and production, ramping up their stocks of weapons and ammunition. But we are still spending far less than during the Cold War, even though the threats to our freedom and security now are just as big, if not bigger.
While Russia’s arms industry is booming, our defence industry is still too small and too slow to meet the needs of the future. Now is the time to spend more, to accelerate the production lines and increase investments in innovation and in more modern capabilities.
As the war in Ukraine is on our doorstep and hostile actions against Allied countries are rising, the best way to keep our people safe is to invest more, better and faster together across the transatlantic defence industry.

- Our society is currently facing an unprecedented number of threats to freedom and security, including cyber attacks, hybrid threats, terrorism and the war raging at our doorstep. What is happening in Ukraine could happen on NATO territory, and while NATO stands ready to defend against these threats now, we need to be ready to safeguard our freedom and our security in the future as well.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, NATO Allies have increased investments in defence production. They ramped up their defence industrial capacity and replenished stockpiles that have been used on their support to Ukraine. But this is not enough to keep being safe in the years to come.
NATO Allies need to invest more, better and faster and they need to spend more on modern capabilities. It is only with a strong defence that NATO can keep its people safe in a free society.

The exercise was particularly poignant for Finland and Sweden, NATO’s two newest members. Finland joined in 2023, while Sweden joined in the midst of the exercise, with many Swedish troops holding impromptu celebrations to mark their accession.

- Every military in NATO has its field ration, known as MREs (meals-ready-to-eat). While perhaps not the height of culinary expression, these rations give soldiers the calories they need to power through a hard day in the field. From Ally to Ally, their contents differ in sometimes small, sometimes big, but always interesting ways.
Watch a Polish and Romanian soldier swap their ration packs while on exercise near Craiova, Romania. With food ranging from canned pork neck to powdered orange juice, these two soldiers sit down and test traditional meals in a way less traditional setting.
After this tasting session, the ‘Red Scorpions’, as the 26th Infantry Battalion "Neagoe Basarab" of the Romanian Land Forces are known, trained alongside their Polish allies from the 12th Mechanised Brigade. - NATO’s fighter pilots met up for a “dogfighting” competition to sharpen their skills in a series of aerial duels high above Ramstein, Germany.
The first “1 vs 1” event hosted by United States Air Forces in Europe, this competition allowed NATO’s fighter pilots to test their mettle against aircraft they’ve never fought before, providing an invaluable opportunity to familiarise themselves with Allied equipment and tactics.
The competition drew more than 30 jets from nine Allies, namely Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, the United Kingdom and the United States, to Ramstein Air Base in Germany, which hosts the headquarters of NATO’s Allied Air Command.
