- Description
- In the largest airborne operation since the Second World War, paratroopers from France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Romania and Spain jumped into Estonia, Moldova, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Sweden as part of exercise Swift Response, proving their ability to conduct complex operations with short notice.
Airborne operations require precise timing, and consummate skill from pilots and paratroopers alike. Their ability to insert hundreds of soldiers behind enemy lines makes them a strategic asset to NATO Allies. Because of the inherent difficulty in these missions, frequent practice is required to maintain skills.
That is why the United States leads Swift Response, a yearly airborne exercise that brings Allies together to drop paratroopers throughout Europe. Conducting these drills together helps Allies familiarise themselves with each other’s practices, improving their ability to work together in the event of a crisis.

Why was the 2004 enlargement of NATO known as the "Big Bang" enlargement?
How do NATO’s smaller member countries contribute to the Alliance?
In this episode, former President of Latvia Dr Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga shares her extraordinary life story – from fleeing Latvia as a child at the end of the Second World War, to building a life in Canada for 50 years, to becoming President of Latvia after the country re-established its independence in 1991. - NATO Allies have been rolling out big guns and practising air defence as part of Exercise Paladin Strike, allowing them to familiarise themselves with each other’s fighting tactics and capabilities. The exercise took place at Ādaži Military Base, the home of NATO’s multinational battlegroup in Latvia, which is holding various exercises ahead of Exercise Silver Arrow in September – their final test before the battlegroup’s integration into the NATO Multinational Brigade.
NATO’s multinational battlegroup in Latvia was established following the 2016 Warsaw Summit, in which Allies agreed to set up four multinational battlegroups in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland. Following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, additional battlegroups were created in Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia. While most battlegroups are multinational battalions, some – like Latvia – are expanding to brigade-sized formations with more robust capabilities, like l...

After completing their service, Finns fulfil their roles as reservists by taking refresher courses and joining exercises that keep the skillsets they learned during their service up-to-date.

- US Marines training in Sweden share three factoids about the Marine Corps. How many did you know?
NATO’s newest member, Sweden, hosted US Marines and Polish soldiers for BALTOPS 24, an annual US-led maritime exercise that takes place in the Baltic region. On Gotland – a strategically vital island situated in the middle of the Baltic Sea – troopers from Poland, Sweden and the United States practised amphibious operations together, familiarising themselves with the island and learning how to defend it from an attack.
In the event of a crisis on the Baltic Sea, Gotland would be vital to ensuring the safety of Allied maritime traffic. In recent years, Sweden has doubled down on preparations to defend the island, holding several defence drills while reactivating the Gotland Regiment, an armoured unit equipped with tanks and infantry fighting vehicles.
20 NATO Allies, 50 ships and dozens of aircraft took part in BALTOPS 24. This year was the f...

- Description
- It’s a strange sight, yet one common in Sweden: angular fighter jets slowly drifting down to land not on a runway, but a civilian motorway.
This is a difficult but critical skill that gives the Swedish Air Force extra flexibility in the event of a crisis. If airbases, airports or auxiliary landing strips are damaged or otherwise unavailable, the JAS 39 Gripen fighters can land on roads that have been deliberately engineered to accommodate landings by fighter jets. The Gripen is also engineered to land on roadways: its reinforced landing gear can handle a harder landing, and the jet stands high enough to prevent loose asphalt or other roadside debris from getting sucked down the jet intake.
Once on the ground, the Gripens make use of a mobile forward arming and refuelling point (FARP), gassing up in a matter of minutes before taking off again. While impressive to witness, this is a complicated art that requires hours of training to perfect. But ultimately, i...

- If you want to become a US Army paratrooper, you either have what it takes – or you don’t.
You’d probably find out at “the Tower”, a crucial stage of airborne training where troopers have to leap off a 12-metre tall platform while attached to a parachute harness. Properly executing this drill means mastering your fear. Most do, but the Tower causes many prospective paratroopers to realise that they prefer life on the ground.
After the Tower, students perfect their landing falls before heading up in a transport aircraft for the real thing. If a student completes five qualification jumps, he or she officially earns their jump wings, a coveted badge among US Army soldiers.
The US Army Airborne School, located at Fort Moore in Georgia, USA, graduates more than 13,000 paratroopers each year, including students from NATO Allies and partners.

- NATO is undertaking its most significant collective defence reinforcement in a generation.
At the Vilnius Summit in 2023, NATO Allies agreed the most comprehensive defence plans since the Cold War, detailing how NATO will deter and defend against global threats, including Russia.
At the Washington Summit in July 2024, Allies took further steps to boost these plans, endorsing a pledge that strengthens transatlantic defence industrial cooperation to increase production, as well as further enhance our ballistic missile defences.
These regional defence plans outline NATO’s strategies for safeguarding different areas of the Alliance, from specific forces and capabilities to levels of readiness required. NATO bolstered its high-readiness forces to 500,000 troops across all domains — far surpassing the goal set at the 2022 Madrid Summit. Additionally, the number of battlegroups on NATO’s eastern flank has doubled from four to eight.

- To counter the serious threat of sea mines, NATO keeps two Mine Countermeasures Group– one based in the Baltic Sea, the other in the Mediterranean - on standby at all times. The Turkish minehunter TCG Akçay recently conducted a counter-mine exercise, ensuring its readiness to handle all taskings.
Join Ben Cooke, a former UK Royal Marines Commando on assignment for NATO with the Turkish minehunter TCG Akçay in the Sea of Marmara. Follow him as he takes a dive with the Turkish Navy to detonate a dummy mine.
TCG Akçay – which previously served with Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group Two (SNMCMG2) – has a variety of means to dispose of sea mines. Its powerful sonar can detect mines that are either moored or ground in the sea floor, while a special system reduces the ship’s magnetic field, preventing it against sea mines. Once a mine has been detected, the ship can deploy a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to confirm the nature of the explosive, an...

- What happens during an air interception?
- Date posted
- Description
- Air interceptions can occur whenever air traffic is flying over or near NATO’s European Allies, and is not in compliance with international aviation rules and regulations. The two NATO Combined Air Operations Centres (CAOCs) detect these activities within the framework of NATO’s Air Policing mission – an enduring peacetime activity conducted 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
If NATO’s air commanders determine that a plane is behaving unusually or unsafely by flying without an identifying transponder, or refusing to respond to hails from air traffic controllers, they can send fighters to investigate.
Those fighters scramble as quickly as possible to visually identify the aircraft and ascertain the nature of the problem. Often, a civilian or military aircraft has experienced a malfunction leading to a loss of communications. Sometimes, however, NATO aircraft intercept Russian military aircraft that have no flight plan or no radio communications with civi...

- Air-to-air refuellers, also called tankers, help keep NATO’s fighter jets in the sky. These aircraft are loaded down with spare fuel to top up gas-hungry jets during long-duration missions. Doing so requires massive skill from the fighter pilots as they must keep their aircraft steady and steer it into the refuelling basket. It’s no small task, but then again, these are no ordinary pilots.
Spanish fighter jets hit the throttles and took to the skies over the Baltic Sea region during exercise Ramstein Alloy 2024.
An annual air policing exercise, Ramstein Alloy tests the ability of NATO’s air forces to safeguard the airspace over and around NATO Allies. For this year’s exercise, hosted by Estonia, Spanish Air Force EF-18 Hornet strike fighters took off from Šiauliai Air Base in Lithuania, where they are currently stationed on a Baltic Air Policing rotation. Overhead a Spanish Air Force A400M refueller gassed up Spanish and Finnish fighters.

- Description
- Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, against the backdrop of its illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014, changed the security landscape in Europe and acted as a catalyst for Finland’s accession to NATO. After 30 years of close partnership with NATO, Finland joined the Alliance as a new member in April 2023.
With its geographic proximity to Russia, Finland shares a 1,300-km border with Russia and has a history of facing Russian aggression. Russia’s unprovoked and brutal full-scale war on Ukraine got Finland to rethink its defence strategy, and abandon its policy of military non-alignment. While Finland now benefits from the protection of NATO membership and the collective defence clause (“one for all, all for one”) under Article 5 of NATO’s founding treaty (also called the Washington Treaty), Finland’s membership also strengthens NATO’s collective deterrence and defence and the security of the Euro-Atlantic area.

- Crack the code of NATO’s flag signals
- Date posted

- Description
- Signal flags are colourful and eye-catching, but do you know what they mean?
These flags are not just for decoration; they are still a vital way of sending messages across the seas. Each flag represents either letters or numbers that can be used together to form words or codes, or has a specific standalone meaning. By combining them in different ways, ships can communicate with each other, and with their surroundings in a snap.
Signal flags have a long and rich history that dates back to the 18th century when they were first used by naval and merchant vessels. Today, they are still used by NATO navies, especially in situations where radio communication is not possible, reliable or secure. Signal flags are not only a practical tool, but also a symbol of maritime culture and tradition.
Watch the Chief Yeoman on board the German Navy frigate FGS Bayern explain how Allies still use signal flags to communicate with each other.

- Description
- For the first time, jets assigned to NATO’s Air Policing mission are flying out of Latvia.
A detachment of German Air Force Eurofighter Typhoons are currently based at Lielvarde Air Base, where they’re tasked with ensuring the safety and security of the airspace over and around Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
NATO aircraft assigned to the Baltic Air Policing mission regularly intercept Russian aircraft when they don’t use transponders to identify themselves or fail to respond to hails from air traffic controllers, meaning they appear on radar simply as an unidentified contact.
The Baltic Air Policing mission is led from Šiauliai Air Base in Lithuania, where the Spanish and Portuguese Air Forces currently have fighters deployed. An additional nation usually covers the Baltic Sea from Ämari Air Base in Estonia, but fighters are temporarily stationed in Latvia while the Estonian Air Force improves the runway.
