‘A violent offender who was being relentlessly pursued, and was seeking to evade capture, came close to losing patrols in a nearby park. However, our armed officers remained committed.
‘Thanks to the quick and selfless actions of this responsible and public-spirited driver, officers were able to apprehend the dangerous individual. The successful arrest may not have been possible without the member of the public and his vehicle.
‘He should feel proud of his contribution to keeping his community safe, and we are truly grateful for his assistance.’

- Labour and Reform UK are separated by just three points in Greater Manchester, according to exclusive polling that suggests the battle to replace Andy Burnham could become one of the most fiercely contested elections in the city-region’s history.
The survey, carried out by FocalData on behalf of campaign group Hope Not Hate, found Labour on 33.2 per cent of first preference support, with Reform UK close behind on 30.1 per cent. The Greens were third on 12.5 per cent, followed by the Conservatives on 11.1 per cent and the Liberal Democrats on 7.6 per cent.
The poll of 1,143 people was conducted between May 22 and June 5 and weighted to be representative of Greater Manchester’s population. With a sample of 1,143, the poll carries a margin of error of approximately three percentage points, making it a potential dead-heat in the first round.

- Bodycam footage has shown the moment a stab victim pleaded with cops to call an ambulance as they handcuffed him on the floor. The family of Henry Nowak have hit out at the "shocking" treatment of their son by police.
The 18-year-old student died after he was detained by cops while suffering from a stab wounds inflicted by Vickrum Digwa, 23.
Digwa had attacked Henry with a ceremonial knife which he carried as part of his religion and lied to police that he had reacted in self defence after being racially abused by Nowak on the evening of December 2 2025.
Speaking outside Southampton Crown Court, Henry Nowak’s father Mark said “justice in the eyes of the law has been served but justice alone is not enough” after his son’s killer was jailed for life and ordered to serve a minimum of 21 years.
“We are calling on the Government to treat knife crime as the national emergency that it is,” he said.

- A vigil is to be held in partnership with the Jewish Representative Council and local leaders following the terrorist attack at Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue.
Greater Manchester Police have named the two victims who were killed in the attack.
Adrian Daulby, 53, and Melvin Cravitz, 66, died in the attack, which happened outside Heaton Park synagogue, on Middleton Road, at 9.30am on Thursday (October 2). Four other people were injured - three of them remain in hospital with serious injuries.
Last night, GMP named the suspect as 35-year-old Jihad Al-Shamie. He is a British citizen of Syrian descent and police say they are 'working to understand the motivation', with the attack being treated as terror-related.
The Prime Minister arrived at the scene today in Manchester with wife Victoria to meet with police and pay their respects.

- A 50-year-old from Tajikistan has been jailed for 12 years for attempting to rape a 13-year-old girl on a train.
Abdulmanon Aliev, who was living in Rye Lane in Peckham, south-east London, tried to use a translator app to speak to the girl after sitting down opposite her on a train from Southend to London on the afternoon of June 16 last year.
She moved away but he followed her, sitting in an aisle seat so she was blocked in by the window, British Transport Police (BTP) said.

But speaking on The Northern Agenda podcast, Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy insists her government is "deadly serious" about the idea and is willing to live with the costs of hosting such a high-profile event.
Ms Nandy, an MP in Wigan, commissioned UK Sport to carry out a feasibility study into the cost, socio-economic impact and likely success of a pan-Northern bid to host the Games in the 2040s. This report will come back before the end of the year, she tells the podcast.

- Eight individuals remain in hospital fighting for their lives following a train collision in Bedfordshire. Over 100 people were rushed to hospital and a major incident was declared on Friday (June 19) after two trains collided near Elstow.
Emergency services were alerted shortly after 5.15pm to reports that two East Midlands Railway trains had crashed. Officers from British Transport Police (BTP), Bedfordshire Police, the National Police Air Service, along with local fire and ambulance crews, rushed to the scene.
The BTP confirmed on Monday evening that 53 people remained hospitalised, with eight in critical condition. However, officers have indicated this figure is "likely to continue to change" as the situation develops.
The driver of one train, 60-year-old Shaun Burton, lost his life in the collision. His family said in a police statement: "We are devastated by his loss. Our thoughts are also with those affected by this incident."
