Motorists in Eugene should expect significant traffic delays Monday as the University of Oregon's commencement ceremony draws tens of thousands of visitors to the Autzen Stadium area, according to local authorities.
The graduation ceremony is expected to attract as many as 30,000 people, creating heavy traffic between 7 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. along Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, Coburg Road and surrounding areas near the university campus.
The Eugene Police Department's Traffic Safety Unit and other personnel will manage traffic flow throughout the day using plans similar to those implemented during University of Oregon home football games.
Police are urging residents who do not need to be in the area to seek alternate routes to avoid congestion.

Kittery Harbormaster John Brosnihan said he got a call about a bear in the water, swimming across the border from New Castle, New Hampshire, toward Kittery.
Brosnihan said he took his boat out and saw, "the bear's little head sticking out of the water, and he was swimming toward Fort McClary."
“He just kept swimming, so I turned on my emergency lights and just kind of kept boats away and followed him in, and we got to the shoreline,” Brosnihan said.

When it comes to furry family members, remember:
Leave pets at home when running errands. Leaving your animal in a parked car, even for just a few minutes, can easily cause heat stroke or brain damage. A car's interior temperature can increase in minutes, even with the windows slightly open. Dogs are especially vulnerable to heat stress because they do not sweat in the way that humans do; they release body heat by panting.
Keep pets inside during the heat of the day; do not leave them outside unattended. Many homes in Lane County don't have air conditioning, but there are still good ways to keep your pet comfortable. Move pets to the coolest room or the lowest floor of the house. Close blinds or curtains to keep the house cool. Police said the shooter was confirmed dead. It was not immediately known how the suspect died.
""The scene remains active and has not been cleared," police wrote on social media. "Road closures in the area are expected to remain in place for the foreseeable future as the investigation continues."
The shootings began in southeast Midland and progressed across the southern portion of the city, prompting a massive multi-agency response.
Officers were first dispatched to the scene at 8:03 a.m. local time, followed by fire and rescue personnel at 8:08 a.m., according to Midland Mayor Lori Blong.
The unidentified suspect was contained by authorities in southwest Midland, where SWAT teams and multiple regional agencies responded.

Not for a vacation or a road trip, but for an adventure that would shape the rest of their lives.
In the summer of 1969, Greg Theim, Gary Gleaves and Ty Pierce left Oregon for Alaska shortly after graduating from high school. The friends, who have known each other since seventh grade, set out with little more than determination and a sense of adventure.
At 17 years old, they traveled without smartphones, GPS or any guarantee they would find work when they arrived.
"They actually discouraged us," Theim recalled. "They said the jobs are for local people, but we were persistent."

- A search and rescue drone delivered critical supplies to two lost hikers near Bear Mountain on Thursday evening after they reported running low on water and phone battery, authorities said.
Douglas County Search and Rescue teams were dispatched after receiving reports of the missing hikers. While multiple ground teams responded, a drone unit located the pair, established communication and confirmed they were uninjured.
The drone then returned with a care package and dropped it to the hikers, providing needed supplies as crews worked to reach them.

- The Justice Department on Thursday announced the indictment of three illegal immigrants from Guatemala accused of smuggling more than a dozen unaccompanied children into the United States under the previous administration.
"More than 475,000 unaccompanied children entered the United States during the Biden administration," Attorney General Todd Blanche said during a news conference. "The way this happened was typically because the criminals calling themselves 'sponsors' trafficked these children to the border, usually committing fraud to do so, and oftentimes the children were abused, assaulted, and certainly exploited."
Blanche explained that in some cases, a person would sponsor multiple children, require them to lie to the government and claim they were close relatives. He added the person would use fake or stolen identities and make other false claims during the application process in order to obtain custody of the children.

The exhibit, “America at 250: Before, Between, Beyond,” is designed to “showcase America as it was before the signing of the Declaration of Independence as well as after and what we want to see our country go towards in the future,” museum staff said.
While the museum holds artifacts from long before the United States was founded, the exhibit also includes items tied to more recent history that visitors have lived through. Among them is a COVID-19 mask made from bark cloth from American Simula.

Rabbi Linda is part of the first generation of Sofrot, female Torah scribes. Today, there are only 16 women who have helped write a Torah scroll.
But, to get her hands on scribal materials, she couldn’t just walk into an orthodox shop, as the vendors wouldn’t knowingly sell to a woman scribe.
So, she turned to her own backyard and decided to make her own parchment from scratch.
Through her Community Torah Project, Linda has invited ordinary people to help her stretch and sand down deerskin — mostly sourced from local hunters — as well as proofread text and sew panels together.
Today, more than 4,500 people have assisted her and their names are now logged in history.
