- Amazing America: The Lasting Impact of Steve Prefontaine, 51 Years Later

- Description
- For many runners around the world, there's the common household names. In the early 70s, Steve Prefontaine slowly became a name synonymous with the University of Oregon, quickly becoming the "Kid from Coos Bay."
Just 117 miles southwest from Eugene, Oregon, Steve Prefontaine was like any other kid in the 1960s. His sister Linda Prefontaine, two years younger than Steve, tells me they would go out and play sports with the neighborhood kids — basketball, baseball but never dedicated running for times. She recalls him being a protective older brother of sorts, just two years older than her.
Growing up just two blocks away from Marshfield Junior High, Steve was a little smaller than the ordinary football and basketball player, so in his freshman year he joined the track. By his Sophomore year, Linda recalls Steve never losing a race — and so the story of Pre as we knew him took off.

- With wildfire season approaching, Oregon Sen. Jeff Merkley said federal wildfire funding has been more stable in recent years, but warned that emergency resources can still be strained if conditions worsen.
Merkley said the federal government has avoided “fire borrowing” in recent years, a practice that can pull money from other programs to pay for firefighting costs.
“We’ve been in pretty good shape the last few years in that we haven’t had fire borrowing... to reduce the risk of the fires in the first place,” Merkley said.

Cardwell left her job as a kindergarten teacher and joined the force to pursue that dream. “That was my goal from the very start to get a K-9,” she said.
After six years of working toward that goal, Cardwell said it became reality six months ago when she met her K-9 partner, Uly.
“Just to kinda see it come to light and come to fruition and then to meet this goofy guy he’s perfect and even better than I could imagine,” Cardwell said.
She said building a working relationship with Uly has been an ongoing process from the start.

- Oregon’s juvenile justice system has changed significantly over the past several decades—and Senate Bill 1008 is at the center of that shift.
In this timeline explainer, KVAL's Frannie Pedersen breaks down how the law evolved from the passage of Measure 11 in 1994 to the reforms that took effect in 2020. SB 1008 changed how minors are sentenced in Oregon, ending automatic transfers to adult court, eliminating life without parole for juveniles, and creating new pathways for review and parole consideration.
This video walks through the key moments, major changes, and ongoing debate surrounding the law and its impact on Oregon’s justice system.

Administration officials say the policy is designed to reduce fraud and ensure taxpayer dollars are protected.
“We’re not looking the other way; we’re aggressively taking on these challenges,” CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz said ahead of a White House briefing on the rule.
Oz also defended the administration’s broader crackdown on improper Medicaid paym...

- Description
- Federal environmental officials are racing to protect drinking water and monitor environmental impacts after a deadly chemical tank rupture at the Nippon Dynawave paper mill in Longview, Washington.
In this interview, EPA Federal Onsite Coordinator Brooks Stanfield explains how crews are responding after hundreds of thousands of gallons of “white liquor,” a highly corrosive industrial chemical used in papermaking, spilled into nearby waterways following the explosion.
Officials say the chemical reached the Columbia River and surrounding ditches and sloughs, prompting emergency efforts to dilute the contamination and protect the town’s aquifer-based drinking water system.
Authorities are urging people to stay away from affected waterways while testing and cleanup operations continue.

- Description
- Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent took aim at California Gov. Gavin Newsom during a White House news conference on Thursday when questioned about ongoing criticism from the Democratic governor.
"There's no cure for stupid," Bessent said.
The remark came after a reporter asked Bessest what his response is to Newsom's idea of a 100% state tax on California residents who receive money from President Donald Trump's "Anti-Weaponization Fund."
Bessent did not elaborate on his comment and ended the news briefing, as he had said the reporter's question would be the last of the day.
Last week, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) unveiled the Anti-Weaponization Fund, saying it was designed to compensate people who claim they were unfairly targeted by politically motivated investigations or prosecutions by the federal government. The program would reportedly total about $1.776 billion.
The money stems from a settlement tied to the leak of ...

- Recovery efforts began Wednesday at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging plant in Longview after an industrial tank rupture and chemical release on Tuesday left nine people missing and two confirmed dead.
The Longview Fire Department said on social media Wednesday that recovery operations were delayed because of "safety concerns of the structural integrity of the damaged tank." The incident involved the rupture of an industrial tank and the release of “white liquor,” a caustic chemical solution used in paper manufacturing that can burn the skin or the lungs if inhaled.
Officials also said one person who was transported from the scene on Tuesday has died as a result of their injuries, bringing the number of confirmed fatalities to two. Known injuries include nine individuals who remain unrecovered, seven injured employees and one injured firefighter, according to the fire department.
Nine individuals remained missing as of Wednesday morning. The fire ...
