- More than half of all filbert trees — more commonly known as hazelnuts — are found across the United States, and one of the earliest places to grow them commercially was Dorris Ranch in Springfield, Oregon.
The ranch was established in the early 1900s and managed by the Dorris family before it was acquired by the Willamalane Parks and Recreation District in the 1970s. Visitors walking through the orchards can still see trees that are nearly 100 years old.
Eric Adams, chief operating officer of Willamalane, said the oldest remaining orchard at Dorris Ranch is about 90 years old.

Thor’s handler, Officer Anthony Button, said he has worked with Thor for four years. Much of their work involves pre-planned sweeps ahead of major events on campus.
“The majority of what we do are going to be like pre-planned or pre-event sweeps,” Button said. “So like football is a classic example, we work every football game, we show up four hours before kickoff to sweep the entire venue. - A malnourished harbor seal pup found abandoned on the shores of Bellingham is recovering at a marine rehabilitation facility in Des Moines after being rescued, officials said.
The pup was brought to SeaLife Response, Rehab and Research, or SR3, where veterinary staff say the animal was likely separated from its mother after people got too close.
"It always takes maybe a couple of weeks to really see how they're doing," said Casey McLean, SR3's executive director and veterinary nurse. "We notice she does have an eye infection we're treating."
The seal pup is the eighth harbor seal pup SR3 has rescued since May 24, officials said.
"Each one of them gets their own medical and nutrition plan," she said. "Hopefully, in about three months' time, they'll be ready to return to the wild."
So far this year, SR3 has treated 17 marine animals, from harbor seals to sea lions.
