- Pedestrians in downtown Eugene will see a change in how they move through the area near the Eugene Federal Building as an alternate sidewalk route is installed Monday, April 27, 2026, near the southeast corner of 6th Avenue and Pearl Street.
An area on Pearl Street that previously had been designated for parking is being repurposed into a temporary pedestrian access route. Concrete barriers will separate sidewalk users from travel lanes, and new asphalt ramps will allow safe transitions between the sidewalk and the street surface.
The city said creating the alternate sidewalk path in advance of potential changes to federal property is meant to ensure there is no interruption of safe, protected access for pedestrians, including those using mobility devices such as wheelchairs.

The family of John Lucas, 45, of Elkview, is disputing the initial account released by the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office after Lucas was killed last week in an encounter involving a Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority vehicle.
Meanwhile, two EMS workers involved in the incident remain on administrative leave, according to KCEAA Executive Director Monica Mason.
Radio traffic from the incident indicated the EMS crew told dispatchers that a man with a knife chased them and "jumped on their truck as they were leaving."

Michael Girgis started playing piano in September 2025, according to his parents. Within just eight months, he's earned dozens of first-place awards.
"I like playing music. I like playing piano, nothing else. You have to work hard so you'll get more money," the 4-year-old said..
Because Michael is so small, he needs an adjustable Piano Pedal Extender. His mother said they used to use a chair before getting the adjustable extender for children.
His mother said his older siblings were taking piano lessons when he showed extreme interest and caught on quickly.
At just three, he began taking lessons - he now practices three days a week for about 30-45 minutes per session.
"He reads the notes better than he reads the alphabet," his mother, Yulia Tsaturova, said.
