- Eugene 4J School District Lays Off 170 Employees Amid $50M Budget Gap

- Description
- More than 170 Eugene 4J School District employees have been notified they are being laid off as the district works to close a budget deficit that officials say has grown to about $50 million.
The district decided on the layoffs after discovering its budget deficit was around $30 million, a figure that has since risen to around $50 million. The roughly 170 employees represent about seven percent of the district’s regular workforce. About 100 of those employees are licensed educators, though not all are technically classroom teachers.
According to the district’s Director of Communications, Kelly McIver, the layoffs will not take full effect until the beginning of the 2026-2027 school year. That means students will not see an immediate change in the classroom when they return to school Monday.

- Trump Defends Bypassing Congress on War Powers as 60-Day Deadline Passes
- Runtime
- 1:06
- Date posted
- Description
- Under the War Powers Resolution, presidents must end military operations within 60 days unless Congress approves an extension. Democrats have pushed to enforce those limits, while Republicans have largely backed Trump’s authority to respond to threats.
Ahead of his departure for a weekend in Florida, Trump dismissed the idea of seeking congressional approval.
“It’s never been sought before — there’s been many, many times and nobody’s ever gotten it before. They consider it totally unconstitutional,” Trump told reporters at the White House.
“But we’re always in touch with Congress. Nobody’s ever sought it before; nobody’s ever asked for it before. It’s never been used before. Why should we be different?”

- Description
- The conflict involving Iran reached the 60-day mark on Friday, and the Trump administration argues that it has effectively ended due to a fragile ceasefire that began in April, meaning congressional approval is no longer required.
A letter sent from President Donald Trump to Congress on Friday said hostilities with Iran have "terminated" despite the presence of U.S. troops in the region. Trump's message skirts the May 1 deadline to gain Congressional approval to continue the war in Iran.
"The hostilities that began on February 28, 2026, have terminated," Trump wrote to House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, the Senate president pro tempore.
Trump also noted in his letter that the war could persist as the administration looks to secure a lasting peace.

- The University of Oregon claims approximately 4,000 different trees, over 500 species, stretch their branches across campus.
But one tree holds the campus' attention for a different reason...
Along the walk to University Hall stood a giant Douglas fir tree, planted around the 1880s, around the same time as the university’s inception.
University arborist, Becket Dechant explains that the tree suffered from an infestation of ants and rot, posing a danger to those who walk under it daily.
“It becomes too much of a gamble, so it is going to come down,” Dechant said.

- Description
- President Donald Trump on Thursday signed an executive order to approve the creation of a new government website where Americans can compare private-sector retirement savings options, an effort to help the millions of workers who don't have employer-sponsored plans.
The initiative was designed to expand access to retirement accounts ahead of a new federal benefit that's set to begin in January 2027, when the government will start matching contributions made by low- and middle-income workers.
The matching program, known as the Saver’s Match, will offer a maximum match of $1,000 for single filers and $2,000 for married couples who file jointly. It will offer smaller matches for single filers making less than $46,000 a year. It applies to contributions made toward 401(k) plans, IRAs and Roth IRAs.

- An employee at Mt. Hood Ski Bowl was killed and another employee was injured in a workplace incident on Thursday, the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office said.
Rescuers from multiple agencies were called out to the scene at Mt. Hood Ski Bowl East around 9:30 a.m.
The two injured individuals were employees at Mt. Hood Ski Bowl, according to the sheriff’s office. Authorities said the employees were in a maintenance basket when it fell from the upper-bowl chairlift into the rugged terrain below.
Because of the remote and rugged location, crews used specialized equipment, including all-terrain vehicles and air medical resources, to reach and treat the victims. Medics arrived at their location around 10 a.m.

- Anti-Israel protesters won, according to the executive director of Oregon Hillel. Lenny Steinberg's comments come after a planned event on April 22 featuring former Miss Israel at the University of Oregon was shut down.
"They won. They got what they wanted," Lenny Steinberg said. "It failed and was completely decimated for Jewish students and members of the Jewish community here at University of Oregon and in Eugene."
Steinburg said that he believed hate crimes, protests and backlash were calming down until this latest incident.
"If you would have asked me six weeks ago how the environment is on campus, I would have said things are really starting to settle down. Six weeks later, I don't feel the same way," he said.

- Viewer discretion advised: live event may contain strong language.
Landscapers were seen outside the Eugene Federal building Wednesday, April 28, this as the federal government announced earlier in the week their plans to install a temporary fence around the building after protests in January led to clashes between federal agents and demonstrators.
Protesters soon gathered outside the building Wednesday afternoon, following a demonstration Tuesday where protesters spoke out against the planned fence.
The Eugene Police Department said it will maintain a safe and orderly environment during the project, which it described as a permitted installation on U.S. government property.
Authorities said the construction zone is closed and protests are not permitted within the area marked by cones. However, protest activity may take place in the public right-of-way as long as it does not interfere with normal traffic flow.
