- Firefighters are using every available resource to battle the rapidly growing Plaskett Fire, including two Super Scooper aircraft operating out of Lake San Antonio.
The planes were seen skimming the lake, filling their tanks with more than 1,500 gallons of water before dropping it along the fire line.
“They’re able to reload with water in somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 to 12 seconds by skimming the surface of the lake,” Josh Silvera, with CAL FIRE, said. “There are two big scoops that come down and inject that water into the tanks, and then they just take off again.”
The Plaskett Fire has grown rapidly over the past two days. It has burned approximately 28,968 acres and is now larger than the Timber Fire, which has burned nearly 29,000 acres.
Together, the fires have burned more than 54,000 acres in the Los Padres National Forest. Fire officials say the Plaskett Fire is now the second-largest fire in California so far t...

- The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office is searching for Sergio Galvez Perez, who allegedly sexually abused and impregnated his 14-year-old daughter, and is wanted on suspicion of incest and lewd acts with a minor.
The teen is accused of murdering her newborn, who was found dead near Moss Landing, while Perez’s wife, Ofelia Garcia Ortega, was arrested on suspicion of child endangerment.
Monterey County Sheriff’s Office officials confirmed that Perez, 38, is the biological father of both the 14-year-old suspect and the deceased newborn, who investigators have named Angelito.
"We can now confirm that Sergio Galves Perez is the biological father of the 14-year-old murder suspect and the biological father of baby Angelito," Sheriff Tina Nieto said.
Investigators said the newborn, who still had its umbilical cord attached, showed signs of trauma. Perez is believed to be on the run with his daughter, and authorities are seeking public a...

The call came in around 4:37 p.m. when Monterey police received a report of a suspicious person near Third Street and Camino Aguajito.
Callers said a man was climbing on top of garbage cans and appeared disoriented. One woman told police he followed her as she walked away from the area.

- Description
- The Plaskett Fire near Gorda has grown to nearly 3,000 acres and destroyed at least one structure as of Friday night, according to local sources and firefighters with the U.S. Forest Service.
The structure was described by local sources as a small, one-bedroom home and by Forest Service firefighters as an outbuilding. It was destroyed Friday night as the fire intensified.
The blaze continues to burn through steep, rugged terrain covered with thick, dry brush. Firefighters have constructed about seven miles of dozer and hand lines, but the fire continues to spread.
The western flank is moving toward Highway 1, where crews are staged to protect nearby homes and conduct structure-defense operations. Firefighting efforts have been heavily focused on aerial attacks, which continued into the night.
County leaders are urging Gov. Gavin Newsom to declare an emergency to help secure additional resources.

- Description
- Evacuation and shelter-in-place orders are in effect in Big Sur as firefighters conduct backburning operations to control the Timber Fire, with Highway 1 closed near Andrew Molera State Park since 1 p.m. Thursday.
"We prefer to do the burning in a controlled manner where it's actually out in the wilderness, and for us to prevent it from coming into, like the cities and or these areas where there are residents," said Josh Dinkle, Battalion Chief for the Corona Fire Department.
Residents are being asked to stay indoors due to heavy smoke and ash from the backburning operation, which is extending down to Highway 1.
"We want people to try to stay indoors because there's going to be a lot of smoke, a lot of ash. We don't want people breathing that in. So because the fire, the backburning operation is going to go all the way down to Highway 1," said Brandon Smith, Commander for the Monterey County Sherriff's Office.
