- CAL FIRE BEU says that forward progress of a vegetation fire reported Wednesday in southern Monterey County near Sycamore Flats Road and Arroyo Seco Road has been stopped.
Firefighters responded to the blaze in the Sycamore Flats area, where the fire burned through a mix of grass, brush, and drainage terrain, creating an uphill run during the early stages of the incident.
Ground crews were sent to the scene, along with aircraft from the Hollister Air Attack Base. Due to fire behavior and terrain alignment, additional ground and air resources were ordered early to support aggressive initial attack operations.
“Aerial resources will support firefighters with coordinated retardant drops from fixed-wing aircraft and water drops from CAL FIRE’s S-70i Firehawk helicopter,” CAL FIRE said in a social media post.
Air tankers and helicopters were used to establish retardant lines and slow the fire’s spread while ground crews worked to s...

- Monterey County supervisors are advancing a year-long parking ban near Bixby Bridge to address tourism-related issues, including overcrowding, illegal parking, and blocked emergency vehicle access.
Tourists frequently pull over along Highway 1 to take photos of the iconic bridge.
"When you say that you want to go to Big Sur, you actually stop here and take the view and take photos," said Moira Brigoli, one visitor.
In Salinas, Monterey County supervisors discussed the plan, which has garnered support from Big Sur residents frustrated by the daily traffic chaos along the narrow highway.
"I asked the Coastal Commission staff, planners, commissioners to come down to Bixby Bridge this three-day weekend because you need to see it to believe it. We can talk about it and the problems there, but you really need to come down and really experience it," said Marcus Foster, a resident of Big Sur.
The county must still file emergency ...

- Description
- One man died after the car he was driving veered off the road in the Davenport area and plunged more than 400 feet down a steep cliff onto a beach below, where it was pounded by heavy surf.
“The initial call was for a single vehicle reported over the bank,” said CAL FIRE Battalion Chief Cameron McFadden.
That call came in just before 1 p.m., with the car resting on its hood just north of Davenport Landing.
“Right where the patient drove off, it’s a very steep cliff there. There’s very little access to make it directly down to where the patient is,” McFadden said.
It is unknown what caused the driver to veer off the road and over the cliff. There was no easy way down for first responders, who had to stage up the road at Greyhound Rock County Park, where lifeguards had to run and swim for nearly a mile before reaching the driver, who had been ejected from the car into the water.
“The two lifeguards, marine saf...
