- An undercover Homeland Security sting targeting suspected online child predators resulted in the arrests of three Central Coast men and one man from Gilroy.
The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office said the multiagency sting was conducted Aug. 14 through Aug. 15 with help from numerous local, state and federal law enforcement agencies.
During the operation, undercover investigators communicated online with people who allegedly sought to sexually exploit minors.
Investigators said the suspects engaged in sexually explicit conversations and arranged to meet people they believed were underage for sexual activity.
When the suspects arrived at predetermined locations, law enforcement officers contacted them and made arrests.
Those arrested were identified as:

Luis Cruz Jr., 32, of Marina

- Technology continues to play a role in fighting the Timber Fire in Los Padres National Forest, as firefighters are now using fire-starting drones to help mitigate the fire danger in the Big Sur community.
This comes as firefighters made progress over the weekend conducting burn operations on the southern end of the Timber Fire and cutting a fire line on the western edge of the fire as they work to protect the Big Sur community from a wildfire that has so far scorched more than 5,000 acres.
“And that has really steered our direction and getting in there, being aggressive on that west end of the fire and really prioritizing them as their number one on this incident,” said CAL FIRE spokesman Curtis Rhodes.

- The person who was killed in a crash off West Cliff Drive Thursday morning has been identified as a University of California, Santa Cruz student.
One person has died and another was injured after a vehicle drove off West Cliff Drive on Thursday morning, according to the Santa Cruz Fire Department.
The incident was reported around 12:50 a.m. after Santa Cruz Regional 911 received a call reporting that a vehicle had driven off a cliff and into the ocean on West Cliff Drive near Steamer Lane.
Once first responders arrived at the scene, they found one victim who had gotten out of the car.
Rescue swimmers from Santa Cruz Fire went into the water to search for the other victim, who was reported to be inside the car.
That victim was removed from the submerged vehicle. Swimmers then confirmed there were no additional victims inside the car.
