Pfendler began her trip on May 21, rowing from Monterey. Nearly 44 days later, she crossed the finish line at 11:54 p.m. PST on July 3 in Hawaii.

The past women’s record was held by Lia Ditton, who completed the journey in 86 days, 10 hours and 5 minutes in 2020. Overall, Pfendler was the third woman to attempt the feat.
By finishing in just under 44 days, Pfendler shattered Ditton's record after finishing just under 43 days and 18 hours.
She also broke the past overall record held by Rob Eustace of the United Kingdom, who completed the journey in 52 days, 13 hours and 17 minutes in 2014, according to Guinness World Records.

- 'It's pretty dangerous', half a ton of illegal fireworks seized in Seaside

- Description
- Seaside police seized more than 1,000 pounds of illegal fireworks from a backyard shed on the 1600 block of Judson, marking one of the largest busts in recent memory.
"I think we've ever had my time at least. And I've been here a long time. We've been working on fireworks for years. But this, this alone, what you're looking at is probably more fireworks seized in one day than maybe five, six, seven, eight years of enforcement," Seaside Police Chief Nick Borges said.
The fireworks, with names like Terrifier, Bombas de la Muerte, and America First, had a street value of up to $50,000. Borges said the couple accused of selling them even had a price sheet, with some items costing more than $300 for a grand finale.
Borges emphasized the potential danger of the stash, noting the dense neighborhood surrounding the shed.

- Santa Cruz erosion rips away Steamer Lane cliff, and surfers say the waves have changed
- Runtime

- Date posted
- Description
- A portion of the Steamer Lane cliff in Santa Cruz has collapsed into the ocean after weeks of massive waves, leaving surfers and scientists concerned about the impact of erosion on the area.
Surfers say the collapse has already changed the waves.
"This wave has changed with this erosion, whether it's for better or for worse. That's everyone's different opinion, but it has changed in some way. I've heard that it's hollow. I've heard that it's a little bit more refraction in and a little bit more bumpy," one surfer said.
UC Santa Cruz professor Gary Griggs, who has studied the coastline for years, said recent storms and larger waves are accelerating the erosion.
"Climate change is real. We have good science. Sea level rise is real. We know waves are getting bigger. We're probably going to get, you know, a big El Niño this year. So be aware that those things are really happening. It's not a conspiracy," Griggs said.

- California bans Glock-style handguns as DOJ sues over switch conversion law
- Runtime

- Date posted
- Description
- California has enacted a ban on Glock-style handguns, citing concerns over their mechanics that allow them to be easily converted into fully automatic weapons.
"The whole purpose of the ban is this plate is removed and another plate goes on it with a sliding switch," said Ray Parga, owner of Valley Armory and Gunsmithing.
Law enforcement demonstrated how quickly the conversion can be made, showing that a tiny device can turn a handgun into a fully automatic weapon in seconds.
California is cracking down on both the illegal conversion devices and the sale of new Glock-style handguns.
"Dealers can't sell a Glock out of inventory anymore, and they can't take it on consignment. The two-party private party transfers will still be allowed. So if two individuals come in and do a gun shop or any gun shop in California, they can still transfer that Glock pistol between them," Parga said.
Owning a Glock-style handgun remains legal ...

- Marina city leaders are getting their first look at a first-of-its-kind luxury resort being planned for the Dunes in Marina.
Those plans come just as many thought Marina was reaching its pinnacle in new development, now comes a project never before seen in the city limits; a luxury hotel is being proposed near Second Avenue and Imjin, next door to where a gas station is being built.
“We've always wanted to attract visitors to Marina as part of a plan to become a robust, lively, small town instead of a quiet, poor town with poor services,” said Mayor Bruce Delgado.
Wednesday night, the city council will get its first look at the proposed hotel being called an "upper upscale luxury hotel" consisting of 150 rooms, 25 of which would be private villas.
The hotel will have a rooftop garden, spa, wellness center, restaurant/bar, and event center. The city is now going after the high-end traveler, not concerned about price but rather luxu...

- Soledad city leaders have canceled the annual Fourth of July fireworks show, citing the $25,000 cost as better spent on essential city services following a budget shortfall.
In June, voters rejected the city’s parcel tax measure, leaving Soledad with limited funds. City leaders said spending $25,000 on a 20-minute fireworks show was not the best use of resources.
"We as a council decided not to fund the fireworks show and instead we are looking at funding other necessary issues that are important to our community as well, and that's looking at recreation, making sure that our families and our children are still having activities throughout the year, and our public safety as well," Soledad Mayor Anna Velazquez said.
While the fireworks are canceled, the city will still host a Fourth of July celebration with activities for families.
"We always have a Fourth of July celebration, so that's still going to continue, and so the city is co-...
