- A Salinas animal rescue operator says her Fourth of July fireworks booth has been vandalized and criticized online, with some questioning the nonprofit’s decision to sell safe and sane fireworks.
Nia Bigelow, who runs 831 Pawdyguard Rescue, said her fireworks stand at Westridge Plaza has been vandalized, with trash thrown inside, defecation, and other damage.
“Behind this box, they have tried to get their way in, which is crazy because they can just climb through our windows if they really wanted to,” Bigelow said.
Bigelow believes the criticism stems from her nonprofit’s mission to rescue dogs and cats, which some see as contradictory to selling fireworks.
“We’ve had some people have voiced their concerns, mostly because we are an animal welfare group and they think that it’s kind of ironic that we’re selling fireworks,” Bigelow said. “And my view, I don’t think that it’s a safe and sane fireworks that are the...

- Carmel-by-the-Sea is officially adopting a standard street address system for the first time in over a century, a change aimed at improving emergency services and simplifying navigation for residents and visitors.
"This is the way I've always known it since I've lived here, so to have something new is good, I guess, at the end of the day," resident Ray Depole.
Another longtime resident emphasized the benefits for emergency responders. "It's much better, obviously the fire and police and ambulances and those kinds of things. It's much easier if you have a house number to find your house, no doubt about that," Depole said.
He also noted how the new system will make it easier for guests to locate homes.
"Now you can have people know exactly where you live instead of trying to explain to them how many houses south or east or west of whatever street you're on," Depole said.

- A court hearing Friday for a Central Coast sexually violent predator revealed potential progress in finding a new home for the sex offender while also highlighting his frustration with the process.
It has been seven years since sexually violent predator Michael Cheek was ordered released from a state mental hospital in Coalinga, but finding him a place to live in Santa Cruz County has not been easy, as community outrage has erupted soon after potential sites were identified and landlords eventually withdrew their offers to rent.
First, it was a home in Bonny Doon in 2021. That was followed by another home in Aptos in 2024 and, most recently, in April, when two motel owners in Watsonville and Santa Cruz eventually backed out.

- Santa Cruz police said they arrested a man who allegedly started a fire in the DeLaveaga area on Friday.
Police said they received the report around 1:45 p.m., and when officers tried to contact the alleged arsonist, he ran away, according to a spokesperson for Santa Cruz police.
Police chased him across the highway and captured him. Video sent to KSBW 8 shows three officers chasing the man through brush on the side of Highway 1 before one of them catches up and pushes the suspect to the ground.
Once on the ground, the three officers worked together to detain the suspect.
The spokesperson said that is all police could share at this time because it is an ongoing investigation.

"Financially, we wish it happened every year because it's, you know, it's a 70% increase in sales. Realistically, I don't know that we could keep up with the pace because we've been here 12, 14 hours, and people still keep coming," said Marciela Cruz, owner of Salinas Futbol Central.
Nearby at Deportivo Falcon, the store's inventory is attracting customers from across the country and beyond.
"We have people coming in from New York, people that came in from Colombia just to check us out. It's amazing," said Giovanni Marquez, the owner's son. "Like this. This is so great for business."
