The festival will be held Saturday, Sept. 5, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at a new 20,000-square-foot venue at 831 Almar Ave. on Santa Cruz’s Westside.
Organizers Collective Santa Cruz and Double Meat Please say the event will bring together some of the best food businesses and makers from Santa Cruz and beyond, all in one location for one day.
Organizers say the festival aims to bring the community together, with food serving as the centerpiece of the event.
“We had a series of events. It was called the Hometown Tour. One of them was sour-themed, so kind of within that, sourdough kind of just naturally fell in,” said Jalen Horne of Collective Santa Cruz. “We found that during COVID, there were a lot of sourdough hobbyists and enthusia...

- Runtime

- Date posted

- Description
- A newly formed Hurricane Marie is expected to move harmlessly west-northwest into the Pacific Ocean, despite social media posts suggesting the storm could slam into Southern California.
The storm is currently a Category 1 hurricane and is expected to strengthen to Category 2 as it tracks northward. However, forecast models show Marie moving away from the California coast, with no major hurricane expected to make landfall in the state.
The storm could still send swell toward the coast, contributing to dangerous beach conditions from Saturday through Monday.
A beach hazard statement is in effect because tropical swell, combined with long-period south swell from New Zealand, could produce sneaker waves, strong rip currents and waves reaching up to 10 feet at times.
Beachgoers are encouraged to stay out of the water. Experienced swimmers should carefully observe ocean conditions before entering.

- Description
- Monterey County prosecutors spoke out Thursday, seeking to clarify the case involving a 14-year-old girl who was allegedly sexually abused by her father and is now sought on suspicion of murder in connection with the death of her newborn.
The infant was found along the side of the road near a Moss Landing strawberry field.
“There’s some confusion about what the actual facts are, so it was important for the DA’s Office to clarify that, first and foremost, absolutely no charges have been filed against the 14-year-old. They have never been filed,” said Assistant District Attorney Lana Nassoura.
Charges have been filed against the girl’s 38-year-old biological father, Sergio Galvez Perez, for lewd acts upon a child, incest and child abuse. An arrest warrant has also been issued for Perez.
An online firestorm erupted Monday after Monterey County Sheriff Tina Nieto said the teenager is both a victim and a murder suspect in connect...

- Watsonville nurses rally after NICU closure forces newborns to other hospitals
- Runtime

- Date posted
- Description
- A staffing shortage has forced the closure of Watsonville Community Hospital's neonatal intensive care unit, prompting nurses to rally for its reopening.
Dozens of nurses gathered outside the hospital Monday afternoon to protest the closure, which they say came as a surprise.
"This population depends on us as they go through their delivery and whatever is happening with their babies," nurse Roseann Farris said. "They know that they can come here and make sure that they can receive healthcare in a timely manner in the community that they live in. It's very difficult for a lot of our community members to be able to get elsewhere."
Nurses who worked in the NICU shared concerns about the impact of the closure, describing the challenges faced by families when newborns require care that is no longer available locally.
"I think it's devastating that our NICU is closed," one person at the rally said. "I've seen babies shipped out to other hos...

- A man was arrested after jumping into El Estero Lake to avoid capture Sunday, according to police.
The call came in around 4:37 p.m. when Monterey police received a report of a suspicious person near Third Street and Camino Aguajito.
Callers said a man was climbing on top of garbage cans and appeared disoriented. One woman told police he followed her as she walked away from the area.
Police later located the suspect, identified as 24-year-old Brian Cardenas, near Pearl Street and Camino El Estero. When officers attempted to contact him, he ran away, police said.
Cardenas then allegedly jumped into El Estero Lake. Officers surrounded the lake, and he surrendered after reaching the shore.

- Description
- Firefighters are using every available resource to battle the rapidly growing Plaskett Fire, including two Super Scooper aircraft operating out of Lake San Antonio.
The planes were seen skimming the lake, filling their tanks with more than 1,500 gallons of water before dropping it along the fire line.
“They’re able to reload with water in somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 to 12 seconds by skimming the surface of the lake,” Josh Silvera, with CAL FIRE, said. “There are two big scoops that come down and inject that water into the tanks, and then they just take off again.”
The Plaskett Fire has grown rapidly over the past two days. It has burned approximately 28,968 acres and is now larger than the Timber Fire, which has burned nearly 29,000 acres.
Together, the fires have burned more than 54,000 acres in the Los Padres National Forest. Fire officials say the Plaskett Fire is now the second-largest fire in California so far t...

- The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office is searching for Sergio Galvez Perez, who allegedly sexually abused and impregnated his 14-year-old daughter, and is wanted on suspicion of incest and lewd acts with a minor.
The teen is accused of murdering her newborn, who was found dead near Moss Landing, while Perez’s wife, Ofelia Garcia Ortega, was arrested on suspicion of child endangerment.
Monterey County Sheriff’s Office officials confirmed that Perez, 38, is the biological father of both the 14-year-old suspect and the deceased newborn, who investigators have named Angelito.
"We can now confirm that Sergio Galves Perez is the biological father of the 14-year-old murder suspect and the biological father of baby Angelito," Sheriff Tina Nieto said.
Investigators said the newborn, who still had its umbilical cord attached, showed signs of trauma. Perez is believed to be on the run with his daughter, and authorities are seeking public a...
