- Description
- Commercial salmon fishing has resumed in Monterey Bay after a three-year shutdown, operating under strict quotas and limits to protect fish populations.
"It's awesome to be able to buy small quantities at a store. We have in the past had friends who get a big ol' slab and share a fish, but it's easier to pick up your weeknight meal here," said Anna Swan, a local customer.
The season reopened Saturday and will run through the end of August, though it could close early if quotas are met.
Boats are capped at 160 salmon per day, with a statewide limit of 83,000 fish.
Smaller boats, especially those out of Santa Cruz, are expected to benefit the most due to lower operating costs, but consumers may face higher prices at the market.
"Salmon, the more you pay for it, the better fish you get generally, and in this situation, sometimes it's some the higher prices, but you end up with an incredible product, and that money's going to...

- Description
- Nearly two months after a fire ripped through a Monterey apartment complex on Casanova Avenue, displacing roughly 90 tenants, those tenants are now being told who will and won’t be able to access their units to retrieve their valuables.
“We're going to fight, and we're going to fight hard,” said tenant Tyrell Morris.
Morris is one of more than two dozen tenants who received a letter telling them they won't be able to enter their unit and retrieve valuables because of dangerous contamination levels.
The letter read, in part: “We regret to inform you that the personal property remaining in your unit has been tested at levels of contamination that exceed safe thresholds established by relevant regulatory and industry guidelines. Because the contamination cannot be safely or reliably remediated, the affected items pose a serious health risk to anyone who handles, transports, or uses them.”
Morris has his doubts.

- Two DUI crashes over the weekend near Moss Landing and Salinas, including one that claimed two lives, are raising concerns about driver safety ahead of Cinco de Mayo celebrations.
On Saturday, two people were killed in a DUI crash near Moss Landing, while another DUI crash in Salinas left two AMR ambulance workers injured. Salinas police stressed that every DUI crash is preventable.
"Drinking and driving causes injuries, deaths that don't have to occur," Salinas police said.
"If you can stay at home, if you can get a ride, if you can designate a driver, all these things are easily obtained before you go out," police said.
Salinas police are urging the public to make smarter decisions, especially as more people tend to go out during Cinco de Mayo.
"We don't want to see an uptick in more injuries or potentially death," police said.
Restaurants and bars in the area reported increased foot traffic over the weeken...

- A baseball game in Hollister brought together players with special needs and amputees this morning for a day of inclusivity, fun, and socialization.
The Challengers Little League and the Prosthetic Solutions team joined forces to show that disabilities are no barrier to enjoying a friendly game of baseball.
The San Benito Challenger Division is a special needs baseball program for children and young adults with mental or physical disabilities.
Their goal is to allow participants to play baseball at their own ability.
"I call it my 'yes I can' game because last year we introduced amputees for the first time to Little League, and it was just amazing," one organizer, Shellie Vegelia, said.
"My kids, without knowing what an amputee was, took it in stride, and they were accepting and they played like they were playing any other ordinary team," Vegelia added.
Prosthetic Solutions Inc. was invited to participate, br...

- Petitioners in Santa Cruz are racing to collect signatures to save The Catalyst nightclub, a beloved music venue that has been a community fixture for decades, from redevelopment into a 7-story apartment complex.
Hector Marin, who started the petition, said the goal is to qualify for the "Downtown Cultural and Historic Venue Act," which could legally protect the building. The campaign is seeking 5,000 physical signatures in just five days to qualify for a November ballot measure.
"The city council themselves have to approve this initiative to be on the November ballot on the late June city council meeting, and that the May 4, May 5 deadline is the actual deadline to turn all of these signatures in. So right now, we need all hands on deck so that we can organize together so that we can save the list and also preserve similar cultural hubs and cultural venues throughout the city of Santa Cruz," Marin said.
The broader petition already has 11,000 sig...

- Description
- WARNING SOME VIEWERS MIGHT FIND IMAGES DISTURBING | A deadly crash forced a full closure of Highway 1 late Saturday night near Springfield Road in Monterey County, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP said officers responded at about 10:18 p.m. Saturday to reports of a traffic crash on State Route 1 north of Springfield Road. Both northbound and southbound lanes were closed shortly afterward and reopened around 3:45 a.m.
A preliminary investigation found that David Olaeta was driving a GMC pickup southbound on Highway 1 when, for reasons still under investigation, he crossed over the double yellow lines and sideswiped a northbound Ford pickup.
The GMC then continued southbound in the northbound lane and crashed head-on with a Honda sedan traveling behind the Ford.
The Ford was carrying four people from Watsonville. A 58-year-old woman in the Ford was taken to a hospital with possible injuries, while the other occupants repo...

"The city's having some problems with, like, overcrowding and, like, too much tourism," said Javier Rivera, event organizer for Salsa by the Sea.
The city says they aren't trying to shut things down — but they are worried about safety.
They told us in a statement, "Hosting large events during peak weekend times has created operational challenges in a high-traffic space. Staff are working with organizers to identify alternative dates on the wharf or another location that can better accommodate the event."
The dancers say they are willing to compromise.

“They were watching our suspect strangling our female victim, and they did the right thing and called for emergency help,” said Andres Rosas, spokesman for the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office.
That suspect is 42-year-old Eric Melendrez of Castroville, and investigators say his victim may not be the only one. Monterey County sheriff’s deputies say that when they searched homes in Castroville and Salinas connected to Melendrez, they allegedly found evidence associated with pimping, including condoms, lingerie, and perfume.
Investigators say drugs and weapons were also allegedly found.
“When these search warrants were executed, they were able to locate indicia that there could be multiple people being trafficked for the purpose of sexual acts,...

In Watsonville, drivers honked in solidarity as activists gathered outside Target under the banner "Workers Over Billionaires."
"We're here to prioritize our community over billionaires. We don't need them to have any more money. They already have enough money. The Epstein class already controls everything. We don't need more pedophiles in power," one protester said.
As the group marched through the plaza, they held their signs high to ensure their message reached everyone passing by.
"Morons are governing America. I feel like the decisions being made right now aren't about Americans. And they keep saying Americans want, Americans wanted, but they're not even looking at the polls," another protester said.

Many tenants just want to get their belongings out of apartment units that were not damaged by the fire. When KSBW started asking questions Wednesday, the Housing Authority of the County of Monterey sent out a press release indicating the insurance company had completed its inspection of the property and determined that only 47 units had been identified where tenants would be able to collect their valuables.
