- Salinas police said a person was arrested after an illegal car meet ended with a reckless-driving incident and an alleged attempt to assault an officer.
Police said they responded at around 10 p.m. Tuesday to the Foods Co. parking lot in East Salinas after receiving reports that 100 vehicles were there for a car meet-up, with some drivers doing donuts.
The lot was cleared, but 40 to 50 vehicles were relocated to the Circle K on North Sanborn Road, according to police.
Officers stayed to monitor the event and saw Oliverio Perez, 23, allegedly driving recklessly and doing a burnout.
When officers tried to contact him, police said Perez allegedly drove back into the crowd at a high rate of speed and tried to run away. He was quickly captured by Salinas police.

- A vacant home was destroyed in a structure fire Sunday night on Vista Terrace north of Boulder Creek, fire officials said.
The Boulder Creek Volunteer Fire Department responded to the fire around 8 p.m. with assistance from the Ben Lomond Volunteer Fire Department and CAL FIRE’s San Mateo-Santa Cruz Unit.
Fire officials said the home was fully involved when crews arrived. About 10 engines and three fire chiefs responded, and crews were able to keep the fire from spreading to nearby structures.
No one was inside the home, and no injuries were reported.
A battalion chief said a tree branch fell onto power lines, knocking them down near the home. Fire officials are investigating whether the downed lines caused the fire and plan to meet with PG&E to discuss the incident.
The home is considered a total loss. Fire personnel remained at the scene to check for remaining hot spots.

- Maya Cinemas will reopen its downtown Salinas theater in October after previously closing the location for financial reasons.
The City of Salinas and Maya Cinemas announced the reopening during a press conference Monday. City officials said Maya Cinemas, the city, the local chamber of commerce and the downtown association partnered to develop a plan to keep the theater open.
The plan includes diversifying the theater’s uses by hosting conferences, meetings and other outside events in addition to showing movies. There are also discussions on adding more Spanish-language films.
Officials also said additional security and lighting will be added in the parking garage.
Maya Cinemas officials said attendance at the theater remained low and never fully recovered after the COVID-19 pandemic.
The closure was first reported Wednesday after KSBW 8 visited the location and saw a sign thanking customers for their patronage.
