- Description
- A young mountain lion found in a Redwood City neighborhood was safely returned to the wild on Monday after officials responded to reports of the animal resting on a backyard fence.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife said it received a report Monday morning about the mountain lion, which was seen under the shade of a tree in a residential area.
Wildlife officers and biologists responded, darted the big cat and immobilized it so they could assess the puma's health.
Officials said the mountain lion was a healthy female believed to be between 1 and 2 years old. She was fitted with a GPS tracking collar as part of a UC Santa Cruz study, put in a crate and taken to the Santa Cruz Mountains and released.
Mountain lions typically avoid humans and populated areas, but they can occasionally enter cities while searching for food or other resources, according to CDFW.

- Description
- New laboratory findings indicate that domoic acid exposure was the cause of death for one juvenile humpback whale and a likely contributing cause for the other after the two stranded less than 10 miles apart in Monterey Bay earlier this month, according to a media release from the University of California, Santa Cruz.
The whales were found separately in Pacific Grove and at Sunset State Beach, prompting a coordinated response from the Marine Mammal Stranding Networks at UC Santa Cruz’s Long Marine Laboratory and San José State University’s Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, along with NOAA Fisheries, the City of Pacific Grove and Stanford University’s Hopkins Marine Station.
Responders said biological samples collected from both whales tested positive for domoic acid, a naturally occurring marine biotoxin produced by harmful algal blooms.
The toxin can build up in the marine food web and cause neurological damage, seizures and death in marin...
