- Salinas High School students were dismissed early Wednesday after a bomb threat prompted a lockdown on their first day back to school, with police later confirming no threat was found and no injuries reported.
"My daughter was texting, 'Mommy, I love you just in case anything happens,'" Rebecca Scheuermann, a parent of a Salinas High School student, said.
Salinas police and multiple other agencies responded to the campus and spent hours investigating before giving the all-clear.
"100% relieved and happy that they're all safe, and I do think that the Salinas PD and the bomb squad did do everything that they could do in their power to protect the kids and take care of them," another parent, Robyn Lipe, said.
The lockdown disrupted what was supposed to be a day for students to meet their teachers and reconnect with friends.
"In any situation, we must allow them to fully execute their operation from start to finish. Sometimes...

- The SPCA for Monterey County and Salinas police are investigating a viral video that appears to show a bull being mistreated after a bull riding event at the Salinas Sports Complex on August 1.
A flyer posted on the event organizer's social media page shows that "Empresa de Fuego" hosted the bull riding event, which also included live music. After the event, Salinas police were made aware of a video circulating on social media that has sparked widespread outrage.
The video appears to show the bull being lassoed to the ground after its rider was thrown. Several individuals are seen kicking the animal, while another person appears to stomp on the bull after pulling its tail.
"We are all extremely aware of the video that is circulating online, and what we saw was deeply disturbing and very, very concerning," Dawn Fenton with SPCA for Monterey County said.
The SPCA is working with the Salinas Police Department on the investigation.

- A Salinas animal control officer is under investigation after allegedly punching a good Samaritan who came to the aid of a dog that had been hit by a car Tuesday morning.
Salinas police confirmed they responded to reports of a battery on the 400 block of West Market Street. Witnesses said the officer, whose name has not been released as no charges have been filed, appeared aggressive and showed little sympathy for the injured dog.
According to witnesses, the officer attempted to take possession of the dog but, after being unable to do so, allegedly punched a good Samaritan in the face after being called a name.
The officer is now under investigation by both Salinas police and the County of Monterey, which operates the animal shelter in partnership with the city.
“And so we will be fully investigating,” a county spokesperson, Nicholas Pasculli, said. “But, you know, as I think it’s important to remember, is that, you know, eve...

The incident occurred just after 9 p.m. in the parking lot across the street from the boardwalk. Authorities confirmed that no one was hurt and there is no active threat to the public. The lockdown was implemented to ensure safety.
Witnesses described the chaotic scene.
"We just got off of a ride and we saw people running. We were honestly freaking out, we didn't know why. People were hiding, mothers were clutching onto their children, so that was honestly pretty alarming," Kamryn Main, a visitor, said.
Another witness shared their experience during the lockdown.

- A recent rescue at Seabright State Beach has brought renewed attention to efforts to officially recognize California's open water lifeguards as first responders, a move advocates say would highlight their essential role in public safety.
"To us, it's a no-brainer. We should be first responders, but I think everyone else is starting to realize it," said Marea Zlatun with Santa Cruz State Lifeguards Association.
State Sen. John Laird said Ryder Williams' advocacy following the rescue has helped amplify the push for recognition.
"He advocated for it. It's not a new idea, but he really advocated for it. And right now, with him getting an invite to the White House and everybody covering this rescue, he has the bully pulpit, and he has used the bully pulpit to say, we should do this. We should make lifeguards first responders, and I think everybody's paying attention to this issue right now because of him," Laird said.
