- Description
- A man who entered the emergency department at MultiCare Bonney Lake Hospital on Friday morning claimed to have a gun and made threats, prompting a hospital lockdown and a large law enforcement response, eventually shooting himself, authorities said.
The incident began around 9:20 a.m. when the man entered the emergency room and made the threats, Bonney Lake Police Chief Mark Berry said.
The hospital immediately went into lockdown as Bonney Lake police officers and Pierce County Sheriff's Office deputies responded. Patients were evacuated from the facility, Berry said.
The lone male suspect remains contained inside the emergency department; it is unclear if he is alive or deceased following the self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.

- As gun violence in Seattle has come to the forefront of the minds of community members, the president of the city council said conversations are "great" with the interim police chief, who completed his first week in the role.
At Stoup Brewing on Capitol Hill, the community group "Circle the Blocks" gathered people to walk around the neighborhood -- not for their usual stroll to spot damaged sidewalks, roads, parks, or storefronts -- but to honor the hotbed areas of gun violence in recent years.

It is just one test for the former police chief in Beloit, Wisconsin, who is now thrust into a major murder investigation and stabilizing a big city department that has seen tremendous turmoil for the last decade plus.
He sat down for his first interview as chief with KOMO News.
His predecessor, Shon Barnes, abruptly resigned last week after questions about the department’s response to Seattle Center, communication, and his travel schedule.
Three people were killed in the July 26 shooting outside the Armory during the Bite of Seattle, and four others were wounded, including a 2-year-old toddler.

City leaders responded with an emergency moratorium last week, but the $200 million project that triggered the vote may already be too far along to stop.
The moratorium came just three days after Blue Fern Development unveiled plans for a 100,000-square-foot computing facility near Interstate 90.
City officials said the pause will give them time to study how large computing facilities could impact electricity demand, water supplies, and the community as a whole.

Sen. Rand Paul argues that Fauci’s presidential pardon removed his grounds for refusing to answer. Fauci’s attorneys maintain that he was exercising his constitutional rights and call the contempt effort politically motivated.
The committee vote is not a criminal conviction, and the Justice Department must decide whether further action is warranted. In this video, we examine what happened, why Fauci invoked the Fifth, and what could come next.

In Skagit County, smoky conditions could delay crop growth and harvest because reduced sunlight slows plant development, according to local farmers.
Jason Vander Kooy, owner of Harmony Dairy in Mount Vernon, said the smoke isn't necessarily damaging his crops, but it can delay harvest by as much as 10 days.

- More than missteps? How Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson's leadership came into question after shooting

- Description
- On Sunday, July 26, a mass shooting occurred on the final day of the Bite of Seattle food festival at Seattle Center. Three people, including one of the suspects involved, were killed in the crossfire between suspected gang members.
A 15-year-old suspect was taken into custody at the scene, and a third unidentified suspect remains at large as of Wednesday, Aug. 5.
But what unfolded in the hours and then days after the fatal shooting, resulted in a major shakeup at the Seattle Police Department and Seattle City Hall, and raised serious questions from City Council members about Mayor Katie Wilson’s leadership.
From no communication, to miscommunication, the way the Mayor’s Office and Seattle Police Department handled relaying critical information to reporters on the night of the shooting, and then the next day, had major gaps. Mayor Wilson eventually came out and apologized and vowed to do better in the future.

- Drivers and transit riders may notice new traffic patterns along Denny Way this month as crews begin the final phase of a project to add a dedicated bus lane to one of Seattle's busiest corridors.
City officials aim to alleviate congestion in key areas and enhance the reliability of bus service. But, some drivers worry that the change could lead to more cars being parked on side streets and worsen traffic overall.
So far, reaction from drivers and riders is mixed as many say they haven't noticed a significant difference since work began, leaving open the question of whether the changes will ultimately ease the area's chronic congestion.

- Vice President JD Vance on Wednesday called on Congress to help codify a broader federal anti-fraud effort, arguing that stronger data-sharing rules, steeper penalties and more resources are needed to stop waste, fraud and abuse in government programs.
Speaking at a roundtable event with lawmakers focused on fraud prevention, Vance said the Trump administration’s fraud task force had identified $230 billion in fraud and stopped $56 billion in fraudulent payments since it was created.
He said the effort, which has involved agencies across the federal government, should now be backed by legislation to make the changes permanent.
This effort will fundamentally always have a limitation unless our colleagues in the House and the Senate are working with us," Vance said. "In order to make this really work, we need our colleagues in Congress to really codify some of this stuff, to make sure that it becomes law."

A large ridge of high pressure is in place over the western United States. We're all dealing with smoke, high fire danger, poor air quality, and heat from the Pacific Northwest to the Four Corners. As that high pressure settles over the region, the mercury will continue to rise.
