- More than six decades after the 1962 World’s Fair transformed Seattle Center into one of the city’s signature gathering spaces, its new director says the campus is facing a defining moment: how to preserve and modernize aging infrastructure while maintaining its role as Seattle’s civic and cultural crossroads.
“It represents our values as a city,” new Seattle Center Acting Director Randy Engstrom said during a recent interview while walking through the 74-acre campus. “A lot of the work of government is invisible. You can’t really see it. But this campus represents a place where you can tangibly see who a city is and what it values.”

As agencies in the West confront what the Forest Service calls a “wildfire crisis,” experts are increasingly turning to forest management strategies that include thinning and intentionally set, controlled burns to reduce the risk of catastrophic fires.
For some homeowners, the draw of living close to nature outweighs the danger.
