- City leaders in Renton are expected to vote next week on whether to renew the city’s contract with Flock Safety, even as plans move forward to physically cover the city’s automated license plate reader cameras.
The Renton City Council approved a motion Aug. 3 to cover the cameras while they remain inactive.
No covers have been installed yet, and could mean redirecting city crews from their work on the Sartori Elementary School traffic safety project, which aims to be in place by the start of the school year. If the cameras do end up being covered, it would be with dark garbage bag material and zip ties.

The briefing follows the July 26 shooting at Seattle Center during the Bite of Seattle that killed three and injured four others. More than two weeks and a new police chief later, there is still at least one suspected gunman on the loose.

- A dispute over who should be allowed inside a women's-only spa where clients are nude has moved from Lynnwood to the U.S. Supreme Court, where a petition was filed today asking the justices to weigh in.
At issue is transgender access, specifically transgender women at Olympus Spa, which offers traditional Korean body scrubs, open soaking pools and steam rooms in Lynnwood and Tacoma.
The case stems from a battle that began more than six years ago, when a transgender woman said she was denied access to the spa.
Olympus Spa had a longstanding policy that transgender women are welcome, but not if they are preoperative or have male anatomy.

- Three people were injured in a shooting early Monday after gunfire erupted at a party inside a short-term rental in Seattle, according to police.
Officers responded around 12:45 a.m. to reports of shots fired in the 2800 block of 10th Avenue East.
When officers arrived, they found an Airbnb that had been rented for a party and determined it was the primary location of the shooting. Police said no one at the residence appeared to be injured when officers first arrived.

- The interim chief of Seattle police is scheduled to speak at the city council’s public safety committee Tuesday and answer questions about the response to a shooting at the Bite of Seattle last month.
The July 26 shooting at Seattle Center killed three people and wounded four others. Investigators said teenage gang members were shooting at each other in the crowd, striking multiple bystanders.
According to police, one of the deceased, 19-year-old Junior Niko-Semo, also fired a gun during the shootout. A 15-year-old boy was arrested at the scene and charged with assault, though investigators said evidence shows he did not fire the fatal shots.
At Tuesday’s meeting, Interim Chief of Police Andre Sayles is expected to update the council on the search for a third suspect who investigators believe was involved in the shooting but escaped, as well as address concerns about the city’s response to the incident.

A partnership with Lime is giving people a convenient new way to get around. The shared mobility program debuted on Monday and began with 500 electric vehicles across the city. The fleet includes 350 stand-up scooters, 50 e-bikes and 100 seated electric gliders.

- A 7.4-magnitude earthquake hit western Colombia on Monday, with the powerful quake shaking as far as neighboring Ecuador, prompting evacuations and killing at least 111 people.
The epicenter of the earthquake has been reported by the U.S. Geological Survey in San Jose Del Palmar, a municipality in the Choco region with around 4,800 people, located around 250 miles west of Colombia's capital of Bogotá.
The USGS said the earthquake struck at a depth of 66 miles and was felt as far as Ecuador and Panama, though minimal damage was reported there.
Local officials confirmed at least 40 people were killed in the Risaralda region and 27 people in the Valle del Cauca region. Risaralda is where the hard-hit city of Pereira is located and Valle del Cauca is where Colombia's third-biggest city of Cali is located.
The governor said at least three of those killed in Valle del Cauca were children.

- A 22-year-old Renton man pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder after investigators say he intentionally crashed into his coworker's motorcycle in Issaquah and killed him last month.
A King County judge set bail for Tyler Sorenson, the suspect, at $2 million in a hearing on Thursday. Court documents identify the victim as 20-year-old Jonathon Langdon.
Surveillance video provided to investigators shows Sorenson swerve lanes and hit the side of Langdon's motorcycle, according to court documents.
During police interviews, Sorenson admitted to intentionally hitting Langdon's motorcycle in an act of anger. Sorenson and Langdon worked together at the nearby Costco Warehouse in Issaquah, according to court documents.
Sorenson told police his "blood was boiling" after seeing Langdon hug one of their female coworkers in the Costco parking lot that night.

The Tacoma Police Department said officers, the Marine Services Unit and Animal Control rescued 21 additional cats from the vessel Monday. That brings the total number of cats removed from the boat to 51.
Investigators believe three or four more cats may still be on board and are working to safely remove them.
Police conducted the first search and rescue of the boat on Aug. 7 and removed several cats from the vessel. Investigators later obtained an amended search warrant, allowing them to conduct a more extensive search of the vessel, where they found the additional cats.
Police have not identified the owner of the boat but said it is legally registered.

- Over 40 cats and kittens were discovered on an abandoned sail boat anchored in the waters off Owen Beach on Thursday, leading to a lengthy recovery mission for Animal Control.
Tacoma Police responded to reports of a vessel with improper lighting, only to find just cats on board. They then returned with the Marine Services Unit, to over 40 of the felines living in "unsafe conditions” inside the boat, according to police.
At last check, there were still about 10 to 14 more cats on board the boat who were hiding or too scared to cooperate with Animal Control.
Officials say that many of the cats were actually in fairly good condition, although they did have fleas.
Animal Control says that they've contacted a possible owner, but hadn't established communication with them. They say that no charges or fees are being discussed as of Friday afternoon, with the investigation still ongoing.

- As wildfires burn hundreds of thousands of acres in eastern Washington, crews in western Washington also responded to fires of their own.
A brush fire broke out in Renton in a field between the Shadowhawk Condominiums and the Royal Hills Apartments, beneath power lines.
The fire sparked up around 6 p.m. on Sunday.
The Renton Fire Department and other responding agencies, including Puget Sound Regional Fire Authority, sent brush trucks and other fire apparatus to the scene.
Crews in yellow coats were able to get a grasp on the flames in under two hours, and the fire was put out after burning a significant chunk of hillside.

- Washington's ferry system is in the middle of one of the largest transitions in its history.
The state is building three new hybrid-electric ferries, the first major additions to the fleet in years. But ferry leaders say the challenge extends far beyond launching new boats. Their immediate task is maintaining reliable service with an aging fleet that has little room for unexpected breakdowns.
Today, Washington State Ferries operates 21 vessels, though officials say the system functions best with 24.
"Our biggest constraint at the moment is the number of vessels," Washington State Ferries Executive Director Steve Nevey said in an interview with KOMO News.
That shortage has become increasingly significant as ferries age out of service faster than they can be replaced.

- Over 40 cats and kittens were discovered on an abandoned sail boat anchored in the waters off Owen Beach on Thursday, leading to a lengthy recovery mission for Animal Control.
Tacoma Police responded to reports of a vessel with improper lighting, only to find just cats on board. They then returned with the Marine Services Unit, to over 40 of the felines living in "unsafe conditions” inside the boat, according to police.
Officers coordinated with Animal Control and the department’s Forensics Unit to safely remove the animals, a mission that continued through Friday afternoon, bringing 31 of the cats to the Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County.

- A standoff inside an emergency room in Bonney Lake ended around noon Friday when a man who was reportedly making threats with a gun turned the weapon on himself.
The incident began around 9:20 a.m. when the man entered the MultiCare ER on State Route 410 and started making threats, Bonney Lake Police Chief Mark Berry said.
The hospital immediately went into lockdown as Bonney Lake police officers and Pierce County Sheriff's Office deputies responded.
"Officers moved to contain the situation, slow it down, and begin the process of negotiation," he said.
