- Three years after a mass shooting shattered a community outreach event at the Rainier Beach Safeway, the same parking lot became a focal point for community engagement and violence prevention.
The Seattle Neighborhood Group, in partnership with the Seattle Police Department, the Rainier Beach: A Beautiful Safe Place for Youth (ABSPY) Core Team and other community organizations, hosted a National Night Out event from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Safeway, 9262 Rainier Ave. S, in Seattle.
Organizers said the gathering is intended to strengthen relationships between residents, neighborhood groups and public safety agencies while reinforcing a community-led approach to reducing violence.

A large ridge of high pressure is in place over the western United States. We're all dealing with smoke, high fire danger, poor air quality, and heat from the Pacific Northwest to the Four Corners. As that high pressure settles over the region, the mercury will continue to rise.

- Neighbors are in a state of shock after a woman was found stabbed to death, and a Renton police officer was attacked just before midnight Monday.
Officers were dispatched to Burnett Avenue South near South 1st Street after 911 callers reported hearing breaking glass and other suspicious noises.
Officers arrived and saw a man in the area, who immediately ran.
"I could see an officer running across the Williams Avenue Bridge, yelling at someone again to stop, and then I heard two pops, which I thought was a gun at first," Christopher Jacobson told KOMO News. "I saw the suspect on the ground screaming."

Sound Transit is looking to install fare gates at 14 of its busiest stations, forcing riders to tap their ORCA card to get in and out. The transit agency is losing millions of dollars to unpaid fares and believes this could be the fix.
The proposal, which could go to a vote before the Sound Transit Board on Aug. 27, would launch a phased pilot program requiring riders to tap an ORCA card or other approved payment method both when entering and exiting selected stations.
The goal is to strike a balance between keeping the system accessible and ensuring riders pay their fares, according to Sound Transit officials.

- Family members of a 27-year-old man who died while being restrained by police inside St. Francis Hospital in Federal Way earlier this year say they are being kept in the dark about exactly what happened.
On March 12, Leon Davis told his family he was checking into the hospital because his heart was racing and he was sweating profusely. Two days later, he died during a struggle with hospital staff and police.
“It’s unbelievable the guy checked into the hospital to get help and was killed,” said Sim Osborn, an attorney representing Davis’ family. “It’s now been 142 days since Leon died on the floor of the hospital with 5 people holding him down. The family wants to know what happened; the family wants to know how could this happen?”

- Wildfire smoke is already casting a haze over parts of Western Washington as hot temperatures dry out vegetation and increase the risk of fires closer to home.
So far this year, wildfires have burned about a quarter-million acres across Washington, according to Gov. Bob Ferguson's office. In Western Washington, smoky conditions are a visible reminder of fires burning elsewhere.
"Montana is on fire. Idaho is on fire. Then we drove through Spokane the day after the 60,000 people got evacuated. It's been alarming," Brad Wheeler, who drove through the Inland Northwest and Eastern Washington this week, said.

- Sound Transit light rail service resumed Sunday afternoon, after an out-of-service train derailed late Saturday night near the International District/Chinatown station.
Sound Transit said the train derailed just before midnight as it was traveling to the southbound platform at the International District/Chinatown station. The derailment happened as thousands of people were leaving an Ed Sheeran concert at Lumen Field, according to several videos posted on social media.
There were no passengers on board the train, and no injuries were reported.
Recovery efforts and an investigation into the root cause are continuing. This is only the second recorded derailment of its kind since a similar incident in 2009, Sound Transit officials confirmed.
At the start of service Sunday morning, Sound Transit said that parts of the 1 and 2 Lines are suspended due to derailment recovery, causing major disruptions for passengers.

A growing nonprofit based in Washington is working to rebuild those connections by bringing veterans, service members and military families together through local meetups and online support.
“It all started as a little Facebook group, and now it’s a big Facebook group,” co-founder Joshua Wheeldon said.
Wheeldon and fellow veteran Joshua Penner launched PNW Vets while taking classes at Highline College.
The veterans recognized that many other veterans struggled to find a place to connect outside of traditional organizations.

- Friday marked one year since a 28-year-old man was ambushed and fatally shot while walking into a church activity in Seattle's University District.
Lynn Croft, the mother of Lebron "Givaun" Castleberry, believes there is still hope to find her son's killer.
"It feels like all those bullets run right through me every day," Croft told KOMO News. "I would like to see justice not only for my son, but also so this doesn't continue. They waited until he was walking into church with his wife and his son next to him, in broad daylight."
