- A standoff inside an emergency room in Bonney Lake ended around noon Friday when a man who was reportedly making threats with a gun turned the weapon on himself.
The incident began around 9:20 a.m. when the man entered the MultiCare ER on State Route 410 and started making threats, Bonney Lake Police Chief Mark Berry said.
The hospital immediately went into lockdown as Bonney Lake police officers and Pierce County Sheriff's Office deputies responded.
"Officers moved to contain the situation, slow it down, and begin the process of negotiation," he said.

- Lillie Vehling was in the right place at the right time when three young girls struggled to stay afloat in Lake Washington during Seafair last Friday.
Vehling is in Seattle for a summer internship and was attending Seafair for the first time. While sitting in Genesee Park waiting for the U.S. Navy Blue Angels air show, Vehling noticed the three girls about 15 yards offshore.
They were screaming for help, and their heads were bobbing up and down, Vehling said. She immediately recognized the early signs of drowning. Vehling is a skilled water polo player at UC Davis and started her own swim lessons program after completing certified lifeguard training.

Air quality in the area ranged from very unhealthy to hazardous all week as crews worked to contain multiple wildfires. For the first time in days, conditions improved enough Wednesday for visitors to finally spend time outside.
"We were really relieved today when it was better," said Becky Sakumoto, who is visiting Leavenworth. "We were like, oh my goodness, we can actually breathe better. It was a whole week in it."
Mike Wrobel, who is also visiting the area, said the smoke has been hard to escape.

- Seattle police are investigating after firefighters found a body while responding to a brush fire Wednesday evening along the Mountains to Sound Trail.
According to Seattle police, Seattle Fire Department crews responded to a brush fire near the South Holgate Bridge around 6:26 p.m. After extinguishing the fire, firefighters discovered the partially burned body of an adult and notified Seattle police.
Police said they could not determine the person's gender at the scene. Investigators also could not say how long the body had been there or whether the burns made the victim unidentifiable, noting that the King County Medical Examiner's Office had not yet arrived.

- Wildfires burning across Washington are affecting more than homes and neighborhoods. Farmers and ranchers say the fires and lingering smoke are disrupting harvests, threatening livestock and putting agricultural operations at risk.
In Skagit County, smoky conditions could delay crop growth and harvest because reduced sunlight slows plant development, according to local farmers.
Jason Vander Kooy, owner of Harmony Dairy in Mount Vernon, said the smoke isn't necessarily damaging his crops, but it can delay harvest by as much as 10 days.
"It doesn't really hurt the crops so much, but it's the delay, and sometimes it can be up to 10 days of a delay in harvest," Vander Kooy said.

- Neighbors are in a state of shock after a woman was found stabbed to death, and a Renton police officer was attacked just before midnight Monday.
Officers were dispatched to Burnett Avenue South near South 1st Street after 911 callers reported hearing breaking glass and other suspicious noises.
Officers arrived and saw a man in the area, who immediately ran.
During a short chase, the man stabbed and slashed a 24-year-old officer in the face with a knife, according to the Renton Police Department (RPD). The officer was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
