- Description
- Wildland firefighters training in North Bend are preparing for what state officials say could be a long and more severe-than-average fire season, as grasses and shrubs across Washington are expected to dry out to critical levels in the coming weeks.
Crews spent the afternoon at the Interagency Wildland Fire Academy, where firefighters are doing field exercises ahead of conditions that could help new wildfires spread and grow quickly.
“Fire is a wild creature. It’s hard to tame, and it does things we’re not always prepared for,” said Sean Kibbe, a Department of Natural Resources fire training manager.

- Chinese artificial intelligence models are rapidly gaining popularity in the United States, driven in part by lower costs and growing capabilities. But a new report from defense contractor Booz Allen Hamilton is raising questions about whether those savings could come with cybersecurity risks.
Researchers at the company examined four widely used Chinese AI models to evaluate how they performed when tasked with writing computer code. Their findings suggest some models generated significantly more security vulnerabilities under specific conditions, particularly when prompted to believe they were working for U.S. government users.
“Can code developed by these AI models be trusted?” posed Brad Medairy, president of Booz Allen’s national cyber business.
According to the study, the vulnerabilities were not traditional malware or obvious malicious code. Instead, researchers said some models appeared to alter their behavior based on the identity of ...

Vance said the talks did not produce a final peace agreement but did establish diplomatic, security and nuclear-monitoring frameworks needed to pursue a broader and more permanent regional settlement.
"We laid a very good foundation for a successful final deal," Vance told reporters. "The final deal is the house. We set the foundation."

- If you've seen a robotic boat cruising around Lake Washington, it may have been NOAA's Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL) testing a new ocean drone.
It looks like a surfboard retrofitted with dozens of gadgets. It will soon venture off into the Pacific Ocean, monitoring atmospheric rivers once it completes testing in Lake Washington and Puget Sound.
It's all to understand atmospheric rivers better.
NOAA will do that by getting the robotic boat, a drone, to the faraway waters of the Pacific Ocean with moisture feeding the atmosphere.

- Six vehicles were hit by a large tree after it broke off from its stump in the parking lot of Sunset Beach at Lake Sammamish State Park, leaving two people trapped and evaluated for injury.
Eastside Fire & Rescue officials said they got the call for the downed tree around 8:50 p.m. on Sunday, with reports that two people were injured and multiple vehicles were pinned underneath. Upon arrival, crews noted a second tree was at a dangerous angle and was preventing them from working directly at the scene.
A witness, Vitaliy Ben, was walking toward his SUV with his wife and two kids when they saw the tree break off and topple over. He said they were just 100 feet or so from getting into their vehicle to go home to Auburn after celebrating Father's Day and enjoying the sunset at the beach.

- Description
- The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for several counties across western Washington in anticipation of more record heat for June, and with it comes a heightened risk of heat-related illness.
The advisory remains in effect from 11 a.m. Monday through 11 p.m. Wednesday. The region will likely experience hot conditions with temperatures expected around or above 85 to 90 degrees, which will significantly increase the risk of heat exhaustion, cramps, stroke and more, NWS said.
Experts added that these risks are higher for those who are sensitive to heat, especially people without effective cooling or hydration.
"It feels a lot more frequent, and they're [heat waves] closer and closer together," said Gwen Howell while walking through Seward Park Sunday.
Across the Puget Sound region, data from the U.S. Census Bureau shared this year showed considerable gaps in the number of households with access to air conditioning.

- The ferry ride from Seattle to Vashon Island only takes about 20 minutes. But for many people who live there, it feels like a world away.
Roughly 11,000 residents share the island — a place where farmers, tech CEOs, artists and longtime locals all seem to exist in the same orbit. It’s the kind of place where you might stand in line next to a baker, a biologist, or even a Grammy-nominated musician.
“There is something magical about this little island,” Isaac Slade said. “Vashon has sort of a strange rare mix of city people living in a rural setting with lots of rural people living right up next to the city. And it’s a 21-minute boat ride to Pike Place.”
Slade knows a thing or two about fame.
He’s the founding member and former lead singer of The Fray, the chart-topping band behind hits like “How to Save a Life,” “You Found Me” and “Look After You.”
Originally from Denver, Slade toured the world ...
