- The City of Alliance takes a major step in the search for its next Fire Chief, as formal interviews get underway.
Seven candidates will first sit down with a volunteer Fire Review Board, made up of Police Chief Leavitt, Dr. Brian Shelmadine, Roger Applegarth of the Alliance Rural Fire Protection District, and North Platte’s Assistant Fire Chief, Trent Kleinow.
From there, candidates move on to the Civil Service Commission, which will evaluate qualifications and build an eligibility list for the City Manager to choose from. That list then feeds into a final Department Head Hiring Process, where leadership style and fit with the city’s priorities get a closer look.
City officials say the goal is a thorough, impartial process and they’re thanking everyone involved for helping find the next leader of the Alliance Fire Department.

The system was being considered to help track stolen vehicles, find missing persons, and support criminal investigations. But Leavitt says growing public concern nationwide — and here in Nebraska — over data privacy and potential misuse played a role in the decision.
Leavitt said the decision isn't a rejection of the technology, rather, it's a decision that this is the right time for us to pause.
He adds that shifting laws, court rulings, and a tight city budget also factored in. He stressed most agencies use the technology responsibly, but says public trust matters.
The department plans to revisit camera and license-plate technology in a future budget cycle — possibly with Flock, another provider, or no system at all.
