- News 5 at 5 - Committee will investigate state's handling of Nikko Jenkins / March 7, 2014
- Runtime
- 0:47
- Date posted
- Description
- Nebraska lawmakers have approved a committee to investigate the state's handling of accused serial killer Nikko Jenkins. Jenkins is accused of killing four people in Omaha last August shortly after his release from prison.
Senators adopted a resolution today that would create a special committee to look at the circumstances of the case. They will also review the Department of Correctional Services' rehabilitative and mental health programs.
Jenkins was allowed to leave without supervision despite making threats of violence and begging officials to commit him to a mental health institution. Lawmakers also adopted a resolution that would create a special committee to study ACCESS-Nebraska, the state's public benefits hotline. Supporters of the resolution say the system has had problems with long wait times and lost paperwork.

- Description
- Senator Scott Laughtenbaugh's bill, LB 382, or the Earned Time Law, is getting a lot of attention this session. With Governor Dave Heineman and Attorney General Jon Bruning working to get the bill through the legislature, News 5 caught up with some of the Republican candidates vying to take Heineman's and Brunings seats, and we asked them what they think of Good Time versus Earned Time.
Pete Ricketts: For violent offenders here in Nebraska we want to keep them incarcerated so making it an earned time law is absolutely appropriate. We've got to determine who we're mad at and who we're afraid of. And for violent offenders, we want them incarcerated.
Beau McCoy: Well I certainly think that violent offenders ought to have to earn that good time, not receive it automatically, which is what is in place today. I'm a co-sponsor of the bill. I very much support the bill.
Mike Hilgers: It should be earned not good time. You have a sentence you ought ...

- Description
- This legislative session, Senator Les Seiler is fighting to repurpose the old Hastings Regional Center to accommodate an overflowing inmate population.
Senator Seilier's priority bill LB 999 would take the 8 million dollars of demolition money for buildings on the property and use them to turn the site into a 250 bed prison facility. The new facility would house prisoners undergoing mental health and substance abuse treatment. And despite some concern from the community, Senator Seiler and Hastings Mayor Vern Powers says it's a good move for Hastings.
Seiler: Our professional staff will be contracted with Mary Lanning and they'll gear up their staff to be able to accommodate both and then you've got all the guards and laundry and food and all the other support staff that would be workers here.
Powers: The salary rate of the lower employees would be pretty large and you go up to psychiatric doctors and stuff, it's a very large salary base. Hastin...

- Description
- Time is running out until the May primary. As candidates in crowded races work to make their stances known. Many of those Republican candidates from across the state were in Hastings last night for the 4th Annual Lincoln Reagan Dinner.
Candidates running for US Congress, US Senate, Governor, Attorney General and other statewide offices were at the GOP event. Lieutenant Governor Lavon Heidemann was the keynote speaker for the dinner at the downtown Lark.
One key issue facing the state is the Keystone XL Pipeline. President Obama said last week that he is nearing a decision, and Governor Dave Heineman said he is ready for the President to sign off.
While Republican candidates may have differing opinions on some of the issues our state is currently facing, they stand united in their support for the Keystone XL pipeline.

It's my first one - I've never ran more than a 5K,
1) I was motivated to do this, because I had recently finished a workout program and was looking for a new challenge. I saw that you could sign up for the Lincoln Marathon by joining Team in Training and knowing what their mission is made it a natural fit.
2) My motivation was our son Nikos. He was diagnosed with Leukemia on May 15, 2004. He had just turned 3. And over the next 3 years and 2 months he endured more than 30 spinal taps, several bouts of steroids, two blood transfusions and had to take daily take chemo orally.
3) I've been touched by how many people have donated to help support me in reaching my goal and even more motivated by the reasons many have donated - being affected by leukemia and lymphoma. I know have a list of people that I'm running for. I plan on writing the name of all of those people on my shirt on race day to help motivate me.

The students showed off that knowledge through their science projects, including one somewhat surprising find that shows chickens that eat table scraps lay more eggs than those that eat traditional chicken feed. And it's fitting for the experimenter's future.
The Rubik's Cube and the egg-cellent experiment were joined by many others at today's 2nd annual Hastings Middle School science fair.
