The decision allows states to continue sending out mail ballots under the same processes they’ve used for years and have accounted for nearly a third of votes cast.
In this interview with KATU, Oregon Secretary of State Tobias Read says the Supreme Court's ruling is a '"win for the rule of law, for the Constitution and for voters."

Wilson said city and team representatives are actively discussing several major issues, including the city’s request for rent, the team’s current obligation to maintain Moda Center at a first-class standard, Portland livability concerns, and labor provisions. The city wants union labor used on the arena project and arena workers to have the right to unionize.
The team and city are currently meeting twice a week. Wilson said the sides should meet every day.

It also would extend exclusions to nearby city-owned property and rights-of-way, preventing people from moving illegal activity from a park to a nearby sidewalk.

- The first Monday commute during Portland’s southbound I-5 closure brought less disruption than some travelers may have expected — but the Oregon Department of Transportation says drivers shouldn’t get complacent.
In this full-length interview, ODOT spokesperson Rose Gerber discusses what transportation officials saw on the roads Monday, which detours experienced additional traffic and what drivers should prepare for as the closure continues.
Gerber says ODOT hopes its messaging is making a difference. Officials have been encouraging people who have flexibility to shift their trips, adjust travel times, leave additional time or use other forms of transportation, creating more room for people who have no choice but to drive.
Overall traffic volumes Monday morning were fairly average, Gerber said. ODOT saw some congestion near Lombard on I-5 and additional traffic around the Fremont Bridge, but the primary I-405 detour did not experience partic...

- In this interview, Adam Bronstein, Oregon director of Western Watersheds Project, discusses an ongoing lawsuit challenging Bureau of Land Management (BLM) plans involving wild horse gathers in Oregon’s Riddle Mountain and Kiger wild horse areas.
Western Watersheds Project, the Central Oregon Wild Horse Coalition and Oregon Wild Horse Organization filed litigation against BLM over plans to gather and remove wild horses.
Bronstein says the groups challenged the plans because they believe BLM lacked sufficient information to determine whether ecological impacts in the areas were caused by wild horses or cattle.
The latest dispute comes after BLM planned an emergency operation at Riddle Mountain beginning Sept. 9. That operation has been postponed because of a temporary restraining order connected to the ongoing litigation.

- Description
- With Interstate 5 southbound closed at Portland's Rose Quarter for the next five weeks, drivers are seeing the first real impacts during their Monday morning commute.
Drivers heading into and through Portland will be looking for alternate routes, and transportation officials warn that the ripple effects could extend into Southwest Washington.
The I-5 southbound closure begins just north of the I-405 split.
Drivers can take I-405 across the Fremont Bridge and continue through Portland's west side. For drivers who stay on southbound I-5, Broadway-Weidler is the final available exit before the closure.
Southbound I-5 reopens just south of I-84. Drivers traveling west on I-84 can still use the ramp onto southbound I-5.
Northbound I-5 remains open, although ODOT says it could also experience additional traffic.
ODOT expects the worst congestion between 6:30-9 a.m. and 4-8 p.m.

Chad Cooley considers himself a lucky man.
On the morning of 9/11 the 24-year-old Jesuit High School graduate from Tualatin, Oregon, was working on the 92nd floor of the south tower of the World Trade Center on a consulting project with three co-workers.
He and one of his co-workers made it out of the building that morning before it collapsed after it had been struck by an airliner hijacked by al-Qaida terrorists. His other two co-workers did not.
“One of the things that’s truly indelible and overarching about my memory of the day and the experience was just how truly lucky I was,” he said in an interview with KATU’s Wright Gazaway this month. “There were no less than a dozen decisions I made between, I think it was 8:45 a.m. and 9:45 when I got out of the building, they could have led to a different outcome.”

- Sky Harbour Group has withdrawn its controversial application to build private aircraft hangars at Hillsboro Airport, ending the city's current review process. But the company says it plans to submit a new application after taking more time to address concerns raised by residents and Hillsboro city leaders.
Sky Harbour formally withdrew its development review application on Sept. 9, according to a new city of Hillsboro staff report. The Port of Portland, which owns the property where the project was proposed, consented to the withdrawal.
The move comes after the Hillsboro City Council heard appeals of the city's approval of the project during an Aug. 18 hearing.

- Description
- President Donald Trump is promising Americans $5,000 checks if Republicans hold onto power after the midterms — a headline-grabbing pledge from his first speech at the Republican midterm convention this week, and one that echoes two similar promises he's made in the past that never came to pass.
"So if the Republicans win, you win with us and you get $5,000. It will be called the Trump dividend," Trump told the crowd. "The reason the Democrats can't do that is because they don't do tariffs, they don't take in money. All they know is poverty and how to ruin our country," Trump added.
The convention, which largely focused on attacking socialism, featured a now-familiar promise of direct payments to Americans. In early 2025, the president and Elon Musk discussed a payment of roughly $5,000 funded by savings from DOGE.

First responders attempted to resuscitate the child, but they were pronounced dead the scene.

Police said speed and impairment do not appear to have contributed to the crash. Investigators are also examining whether the parking lot’s layout or nearby obstructions played a role.

- Description
- After nearly 82 years, we now know what happened to an Oregon-connected World War II reconnaissance pilot who disappeared during a mission in Thailand.
1st Lt. Franklin H. McKinney, a pilot assigned to the 35th Photographic Reconnaissance Squadron, went missing after taking off on Nov. 5, 1944. The mission was to conduct aerial photography operations behind enemy lines over northern Thailand.
For decades, investigators had no leads regarding what happened to McKinney. He was listed as missing in action for over eight decades. However, all of that changed in 2012 when a Thai police report was found.
The report, dating back to World War II, described how villagers in Thailand on that November day in 1944, witnessed McKinney's twin-engine aircraft flying through a severe storm before it was struck by lightning, caught fire and crashed.
