- DEEP DIVE: Could America stop changing the clocks? Congress takes major step
- Runtime

- Date posted
- Description
- For generations, Americans have followed the same routine twice a year: setting clocks forward each spring and back each fall. Now, Congress has taken one of its biggest steps yet toward ending that tradition.
The House has approved the Sunshine Protection Act, legislation that would make daylight saving time permanent across most of the United States. If the measure ultimately becomes law, Americans would no longer turn their clocks back every November, ending the twice-yearly time change that has long been the subject of debate.
Supporters argue the current system disrupts daily life for little benefit. Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Fla., who introduced the legislation, said changing the clocks twice a year interrupts Americans' schedules "for no good reason."
Backers of permanent daylight saving time say keeping later sunsets year-round would encourage people to spend more time outdoors, benefit businesses that rely on evening customers and eliminate ...

- Portland police say four teenagers from Seattle have been arrested following a violent gas station robbery that left a convenience store employee shot five times and seriously injured.
Investigators say the shooting at a Northeast Portland 76 station quickly led detectives to uncover a series of violent crimes allegedly involving the same group, including an armed carjacking, another gas station robbery, and multiple armed confrontations.
Portland Police credited the rapid response of patrol officers, detectives, and specialized units for identifying the suspects and making arrests less than 19 hours after the shooting.

- Description
- President Donald Trump outlined alleged vulnerabilities with the U.S. election system in a primetime address Thursday, focusing heavily on what he said were Chinese efforts to undermine his presidency and American elections, and calling once again for passage of a bill that would require voters to provide proof of citizenship to register and photo identification to cast a ballot.
Trump started his speech with a list of accomplishments from his second term but quickly turned his focus to election integrity.
Trump said he was declassifying and releasing “critical intelligence revealing shocking vulnerabilities in our election infrastructure” – an election system he said falls “catastrophically short” of the security that Americans deserve.
Trump said the documents, now available on the White House website, were gathered by a task force and cover multiple areas of concern with U.S. elections.

Mostly sunny skies will be a sign of things to come through the weekend and into the workweek.
A heat wave will take shape beginning Monday, with four consecutive days of high temperatures above 90 degrees.
The heat could last into next weekend as well, but it is still too early to know for sure.
For now, all eyes remain on the wildfires that have exploded east of the Cascades. Large pyrocumulus clouds were visible on satellite imagery and on the University of Oregon's AlertWest cameras.
A Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 10 p.m. Friday. Hot temperatures, gusty winds and low relative humidity will create prime conditions for new fires to start and existing fires to continue growing.

Trump’s speech presented allegations of interference and influence in ways that lacked key context, and did not produce evidence that votes had been manipulated or that the election outcome had been altered.
Trump began Thursday night with a stark warning about what he described as flaws in the voting system and said he was releasing previously classified documents related to the 2020 and 2018 elections, when he lost the presidential election and his party suffered losses.
He did not raise doubts about his election wins in 2016 or 2024.
“America is back and doing really well, but we still have a major challenge that must be urgently addressed, because no country can be great without fair and honest elections,” he said.
He said all Americans should be assured their elections are free of cheating...

- Portland police are searching for the person or people responsible after a 13-year-old boy was shot multiple times Wednesday night near Roosevelt High School in the St. Johns neighborhood.
First responders started trauma first aid at the scene, and the boy was rushed to the hospital by ambulance. Thankfully, police say they expect him to recover.
A teenager who witnessed the aftermath told KATU they were driving past Roosevelt High School when they saw the 13-year-old on the sidewalk, clutching his side and calling for help. He said he and his friends pulled over and called 911.
According to Portland Police Chief Bob Day, officers arrived quickly after the shooting was reported.
"I can tell you that we've looked at the dispatch logs, and our first officers were on scene in about six minutes, which is ideal for what we would consider a priority one call."

- Description
- Flavored tobacco and nicotine sales bans in Oregon's two most populous counties are one step closer to taking effect after the Oregon Supreme Court declined to hear the latest legal challenge to Multnomah County's ordinance.
By declining to review the case, the state's highest court left an Oregon Court of Appeals' ruling in place, removing the final major legal hurdle for implementation after it had already upheld Washington County's nearly identical ordinance in May.
With the appeals process largely complete, the counties can now begin preparing retailers for the new restrictions before eventually enforcing the ordinances.

Forecasters urged residents to move to higher ground as rivers continued to rise.
Gov. Greg Abbott said there has been two lives lost so far as catastrophic flooding swept through the region, though he did not specify where or when the death occurred. Abbott added that more than 2,350 emergency personnel have been deployed to the response and have rescued well over 70 people.
One of the victims who lost their life was a male who had been swept away inside an RV, while the other victim was a female who was swept away while driving on the road, according to Gov. Abbott

- Description
- Jennifer Bos, the mother of Megan Bos, testified during Todd Blanche’s Senate confirmation hearing and shared the story of her daughter’s death.
Bos said Megan disappeared in February 2025, leaving her family searching for answers for 51 days. She told lawmakers that her daughter’s death exposed what she called major failures in immigration enforcement, drug trafficking policy, sanctuary policies and cashless bail.
During her testimony, Bos said victims’ families are not looking for political wins, but action to prevent other families from going through the same pain.
Bos told the committee she supports Blanche’s confirmation as attorney general, saying she believes he has listened to victims’ families and would make public safety, law enforcement and the fight against criminal organizations a priority.

Epstein survivor Dani Bensky is calling on the Senate not to confirm Blanche as attorney general, saying the Justice Department mishandled the Epstein files and failed to listen to survivors.
Bensky criticized the release of personal identifying information tied to victims and said survivors repeatedly tried to reach Blanche but were ignored. She also said Blanche failed to look into multiple entities connected to Jeffrey Epstein, despite her requests.
