- Description
- A new report shows traffic deaths in Portland remain a stubborn challenge, even as city officials ramp up safety efforts on streets and intersections with the worst crash records.
Portland’s Vision Zero program aims to eliminate all traffic deaths and serious injuries, but new data shows the city continues to face a troubling number of deaths on its roads.
According to the report prepared by the City Administrator, 36 people have died in traffic crashes so far this year, compared with 25 at the same point last year and 38 at the same point in 2024.
It also shows that motorcycle deaths have doubled, from seven to 14, while deaths on city streets maintained by the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) have climbed from 13 to 25.

- Benson High School case raises alarm over '764' online network targeting children
- Runtime

- Date posted
- Description
- Prosecutors said Friday that the FBI found references to the violent online network known as “764” and numerous searches about harming others on devices belonging to the teenager charged in the Benson Polytechnic High School chemical incident.
The allegations are drawing attention to a broader threat the FBI says targets children through social media, gaming platforms and messaging apps.
The 15-year-old faces 19 charges, including 12 counts of attempted murder or attempted aggravated murder and domestic terrorism charges, following the Sept. 8 incident at the school in Portland’s Kerns neighborhood. Investigators say he mixed chemicals in the cafeteria and inhaled fumes, critically injuring himself.
The references described in court do not, by themselves, establish that the teenager was a member of 764.

- Date posted

- Description
- The top two candidates for Oregon governor clashed Thursday night in their first televised debate of the general-election campaign, offering sharply different views of why the state is struggling with affordability, education and public safety.
Democratic Gov. Tina Kotek, seeking a second term, repeatedly criticized Republican state Sen. Christine Drazan’s voting record and tried to tie her to President Donald Trump’s policies.
Chandler James, an assistant professor of political science at the University of Oregon, said debates can help voters compare candidates and hold them accountable for their policy positions.
James said the people who watch gubernatorial debates are often highly engaged voters who have already made up their minds.
Many others may see only a short clip on social media or in news coverage, rather than the full debate. That can remove context, he said, and amplify a single damaging exchange or mistake.

Meeting new state goals for third-grade reading, eighth-grade math and student attendance would require nearly $5 billion more, according to the commission. That would push total state K-12 funding above $16 billion.

- Multnomah County commissioners are set to discuss a plan that could increase the ambulance response-time goal from eight minutes to 15 minutes in Wood Village, Fairview and Troutdale.
The current eight-minute standard was set for faster service, but county officials say keeping it would require adding about two-and-a-half ambulances in East County at a cost of about $3.5 million per year, plus another $3.4 million to avoid putting a strain on ambulance coverage in other areas.
Here's our interview with Multnomah County Commissioner Julia Brim-Edwards.

The agency provides support to low-income residents, including housing, rental assistance and other services for people experiencing homelessness.
President Donald Trump signed an executive order last year directing federal policy away from Housing First, which prioritizes providing permanent housing without requiring sobriety or treatment first. The order instead emphasizes recovery and addiction-support approaches.
