- Description
- A 3-year-old taken by his mother, who police say did not legally have custody of him, was found safe on Thursday but it was not until hours later that police found his mother.
Police say Mari Martinez dropped the boy off at the Lake Oswego home of someone she knew, which is where he was found. Police found Martinez a short time later. It was not immediately clear where.
The two had not been seen since Tuesday. Officials issued an Amber Alert Wednesday.
In their effort to find Martinez, Beaverton police on Thursday released a new photo of Martinez and asked the public for help in finding her.
Police said a judge ruled Tuesday that the boy was in “immediate danger” in Martinez’s “unsupervised custody.”

One page will include traditional contests, such as state and federal offices and ballot measures. The other will be dedicated to ranked choice voting contests for Portland and Multnomah County offices.
Ranked choice voting will be familiar to Portland voters, who used the system to elect the mayor and City Council in 2024. But it will be new for many voters outside Portland, including in East Multnomah County.
County elections officials say they are focusing outreach there because many of those voters have not previously used ranked choice voting.

- Oregon school funding explained: Why districts get different shares
- Runtime

- Description
- When it comes to funding Oregon's public schools, the numbers can quickly get complicated.
At its most basic, school funding comes from three main sources: the state, local communities, and the federal government. How much comes from each source can look very different depending on where a student goes to school.
Statewide, more than half of Oregon public school funding 51.8% came from the state during the 2023-24 school year, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. Another 38.2% came from local sources, with property taxes making up the largest share, while 10.1% came from the federal government.
But those statewide percentages don't tell the whole story.

Three of the schools are in the Jefferson/Roosevelt region, while the other three are in the Cleveland/Franklin region. None of the proposed Title I closures are in Grant/McDaniel or Wells/Lincoln.
Title I gives schools extra federal money to help students learn. It supports schools serving families with needs such as poverty, although a Title I label does not mean every child at the school lives in poverty.

- Parents are speaking out as Irvington School in Portland faces possible closure under a new plan from Portland Public Schools.
KATU has been following district proposals that could shutter up to 14 schools, including Irvington, as leaders grapple with declining enrollment. Changes could take effect in fall 2027 if approved by the school board in December.
“We know how deeply connected students, families, educators and communities are to their schools and considering the closure of any school is extraordinarily difficult," Superintendent Kimberlee Armstrong said, adding the district must ensure all students get strong programs, stable staffing and support.

Mall employees called Vancouver Police on September 30 to report that the man identified as Gabriel Hideo, was crawling through the ceiling, breaking tiles and damaging lights and other fixtures.
Police evacuated the second floor of the Macy’s store while they tried to get him down. Officials said they put a ladder through the ceiling and a mattress underneath in case he fell.
After more than an hour, Hideo finally steps onto the ladder at about 5:45 p.m. - but police pulled the ladder out from under him when he tried to climb back up into the ceiling.
"He landed on the mattress, got up and tried to run. That didn’t work out so well," Vancouver Police said.

- When the school bell rings for the new school year in the fall of 2027, hundreds of Portland Public Schools (PPS) elementary and middle school students may find themselves at a new school.
The district’s rightsizing effort is intended to reallocate resources to better serve an evolving, and dropping, student population.
PPS has consistently said the process is focused on student outcomes, not dollars and cents. But a KATU investigation found school closures may not deliver a major financial windfall for the district.

If that gap leads to another round of reductions, PPS says the combined figure would reach about $237 million.
The repeated shortfalls raise a larger question: If PPS keeps cutting, why does the gap keep coming back?
