- After murder of five people in one house, domestic violence advocates host sessions on warning signs
- Runtime

- Description
- Domestic violence advocates say that despite a county detective's statement that gunshots in unincorporated ranch and farmland areas of Washington County would not necessarily prompt a call to 911, neighbors are questioning whether they could have done more to prevent the tragedy that shook the small community of roughly 27,470 people.
Investigators believe the killings of a three-generation family of women and their close friends began with gunshots Friday night.
When asked whether police had been dispatched in response to those shots, Washington County Sheriff’s Office Detective Mark Pavolny said gunshots in rural agricultural areas of Oregon do not generally prompt calls to law enforcement.
It was not until the early hours of Saturday — after police say 36-year-old Benjamin Parker had likely shot and killed his 26-year-old girlfriend, her mother, grandmother, best friend and her best friend’s partner — that a neighbor called 911 to repo...

Parton's publicist said Tuesday that the singer-songwriter died at a Nashville hospital following a brief battle with cancer. Her decades-long career included Grammy wins, film roles and eventually a musical inspired by her life.
Beyond entertainment, Parton became known for her philanthropy and advocacy. Her Imagination Library has gifted more than 300 million books to children around the world. The program is available in every Oregon county, providing free books each month to children from birth through age five, regardless of family income.
Parton was also a longtime advocate for equality and LGBTQ+ rights.
In an interview with KATU, Poison Waters reflects on what that support meant to her as she grew older and became part of the LGBTQ+ community while repre...

"According to a statement that was released by the Lancaster County Commissioner today, they cannot find any measles deaths in Lancaster County, and they complained that the governor will not give them that information. The CDC tried to get that information from the governor yesterday, and the state is refusing to cooperate."
Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (D) called the two measles deaths "completely preventable" on Tuesday afternoon.
The measles outbreak is a "serious and ongoing problem," Shapiro said, adding that the outbreak has spread to 28 counties in the commonwealth.

- Description
- Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield says President Donald Trump has tried to politicize the U.S. Postal Service with his executive order aimed at restricting vote-by-mail.
Earlier this week, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against the states that had sued the administration over his order. That ruling was on procedural grounds and not on the merits of the states' case.
On Wednesday, a group of two-dozen states led by Democrats -- including Oregon and Washington -- filed a new lawsuit.
In this video, Rayfield says "protecting Oregon's values, protecting our elections is an absolute top priority."
His comments came before a federal judge in Boston lifted an order prohibiting the postal service from implementing Trump's order. The judge cited the Supreme Court ruling as the reason for doing so.
That was a case separate from the states' original lawsuit.

Rachel Schutz, executive director of the Washington County Family Peace Center, said community members should not blame themselves for missing warning signs. Instead, she said the focus should remain on the person responsible for the violence.
Amy Babcock, executive director of the Washington County Domestic Violence Resource Center, said rural survivors can face physical isolation, longer law enforcement response times, transportation challenges and limited access to services.
Babcock also cited a shortage of emergency housing. The county’s domestic violence hotline has received more than 3,200 calls this year, she said, and 70% of callers need a safe place to go. Advocates say the county is expanding lethality assessments and preparing a mobile outreach program to connect survivors with help more quickly....

- Description
- Oregon students have made some gains since the pandemic, but statewide achievement remains among the lowest in the nation.
Just 31% of students are proficient in math, while 43% meet state standards in English. And that raises a bigger question: If some Oregon school districts are helping students recover faster than others, what's working — and can other districts learn from it?
Inside classrooms across McMinnville, students aren't just learning new lessons. They're working to recover from years of learning loss. But unlike many districts across Oregon, McMinnville is showing encouraging signs that students are catching up.

Read on Monday, as he has done in the past, said that Oregon’s elections are secure and will be in November.
“We are going to run the same safe, fair and accurate mail-in elections that we have for a very long time, and Oregonians ought to have confidence in that,” he said. “We know that our system works. The fire grew to about 12 acres Monday, prompting Level 1, 2 and 3 evacuation notices as crews attacked the flames from the ground and air. By Monday night, officials said the most active parts of the fire were under control. Areas previously under Level 2 and Level 3 evacuation notices were reduced to Level 1, while earlier Level 1 notices were lifted.

- Description
- Just before Hillsboro's 120-day moratorium on data centers went into effect, the Texas-based real estate investment trust Digital Realty submitted a land use application to build a data center just under 200 feet away from Liberty High School.
The proposed site is located at 6240 NE Wagon Drive, 5340 & 5450 NE Croeni Avenue, and 5225 NE Five Oaks Drive. Preliminary plans KATU obtained through a public records request show the data center would take up roughly 15.7 acres and 496,540 square feet. The estimated valuation for the so-called Wagon Data Center would be over $5 million.
This comes as community concern has grown over the energy demands and health impacts of data centers.
