- Description
- With the Portland Trail Blazers’ season nearing tipoff, attention in Portland has shifted from the court to City Hall, where negotiations are beginning on a long-term deal aimed at securing the team’s future in the Rose City.
Portland City Council passed a term sheet Aug. 12 outlining the city’s financial commitment to Moda Center arena renovations and what the city expects from the team in return.
Under the agreement, the team and the city will meet at least twice a week to work out the details of the deal. Their first meeting after the term sheet vote was this past Monday.
The negotiations come as City Council remains divided over how much of the renovation costs Portland should pay, what the city should receive in return, and what keeping the team in Portland is worth.
Portland City Councilor Steve Novick, who represents the city’s Third District, is involved in the discussions.

- A wave of turnover is headed to Capitol Hill after the November midterm elections, with at least 83 incumbents in the House and Senate not returning to their seats.
The departures are happening for a range of reasons. Some lawmakers are retiring, others are running for different offices, and some lost their primaries.
Republicans currently control both chambers of Congress, holding a 53-47 majority in the Senate and a 219-212 majority in the House. With Vice President JD Vance holding a tie-breaking vote, Democrats would need to flip four seats to take control of the Senate.
Several battleground Senate races are already set, but Alaska, Maine, Michigan and Ohio are considered toss-ups, setting the stage for what is expected to be a tight and competitive fight for control of the U.S. Senate.
Ahead of that battle, U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) discussed the state of the Democratic Party and other topics on this week's segment of Your Voi...

Red Flag Warnings are posted for most of the state east of the Cascades. The Storm Prediction Center has elevated and critical fire weather conditions likely Saturday.
A mix of gusty winds, low relative humidity and the chance of dry thunderstorms could push existing fires beyond containment lines or cause new fires to grow quickly.
Fire weather conditions will lessen Sunday.
Cooler conditions are expected west of the Cascades on Saturday and Sunday. A few computer models show the possibility of very light showers or sprinkles early Sunday morning. Any rain that falls would be very light. Highs over the weekend will top out in the upper 70s.

The Northwest Interagency Coordination Center (NWCC) said Friday nearly 2.5 million acres have burned across Oregon so far in 2026, surpassing the previous record of just over 2 million acres set in 2024.
Fire weather watches and Red Flag Warnings are in effect across parts of the Pacific Northwest Friday and Saturday, with forecasters warning of gusty winds, low humidity and thunderstorms.
Fire officials said those conditions could fuel existing fires, threaten critical containment lines and spark new wildfires, adding to an already historic season.

- With a five-week shutdown of southbound I-5 through Portland’s Rose Quarter now just three weeks away, first responders are preparing for traffic to spill onto city streets.
The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) plans to close I-5 southbound between I-405 and I-84 beginning at about 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11.
The closure will remain in place around the clock for up to five weeks while crews make structural repairs, replace bridge joints, and repave the freeway.
ODOT has warned that travel times near the project could take two to three times longer than usual.
For Portland police, that means officers responding to calls will be navigating many of the same backups as everyone else.

- Wildfire season can take a toll on more than air quality and the landscape. Ash from wildfires can also cause problems for your car, especially if it sits on the vehicle or is cleaned off the wrong way.
KATU spoke with vehicle damage and protection expert Ken Huening about how wildfire ash can affect a car’s paint, glass, air filters and interior — and what drivers can do to minimize potential damage.
Ash may look harmless, but the fine particles can be abrasive and scratch a vehicle’s finish if someone wipes them away while they are dry. Moisture can create additional problems by mixing with ash and potentially damaging a car’s clear coat. Experts recommend gently rinsing ash from a vehicle rather than brushing or wiping it off dry.
Drivers should also pay attention to what’s happening under the hood and inside the vehicle. Heavy smoke and ash can contaminate cabin and engine air filters, potentially requiring drivers to inspect or repl...

The program, administered through Prosper Portland, is designed to lower the cost of preparing vacant commercial spaces for new businesses. Interim Grants Program Manager Sarah Harpole says the initiative complements other city efforts focused on improving safety, cleanliness and street-level conditions around Portland storefronts.
Businesses must commit to a lease of at least three years to qualify. The grants generally operate through reimbursement, meaning businesses typically cover eligible improvement costs before receiving the money.
The funding will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, rather than prioritizing applicants based on financial need or directing funding first to neighborhoods with the highest vacancy rates. Harpol...

- Description
- Just weeks after regular parking enforcement began in downtown Beaverton, Mayor Lacey Beaty says residents are already contacting her with concerns about what she called the "overreach" of the city's parking program.
The complaints mark the latest chapter in a months-long debate over how Beaverton should manage increasingly crowded downtown streets. Earlier this year, a divided City Council voted 4-3 to approve a new parking enforcement contract as residents and businesses debated whether stricter enforcement would make it easier or harder to visit downtown.
The city held a warning period from July 20 through Aug. 1 before regular compliance operations began Aug. 3.
During a City Council meeting Tuesday, Beaty, who opposed the parking enforcement contract, said she is already hearing complaints.

- TriMet will cut bus and MAX service beginning Sunday, Aug. 23, as the agency works to close what it calls a significant long-term budget deficit and avoid a “fiscal cliff” it says would be devastating to transit service, riders, employees and the regional economy.
Service will be adjusted on 34 lines, including eliminating two bus lines “completely due to low ridership.” Many of the changes are centered on network efficiency, including combining lines or reducing where lines run near others, and shifting service to maintain service in areas and at times when more people ride.
TriMet also said it is shortening the MAX Green Line as part of the August changes. The MAX Green Line will no longer cross the river into downtown Portland and will only run between Clackamas Town Center and Gateway Transit Center.
The changes will mean longer commute times for many riders.

- Description
- North Portland's drop-in center in the St. Johns neighborhood is closing at the end of the month.
The shelter opened last July, and offered a variety of services to those experiencing houselessness and addiction. According to the Homeless Services Department, this closure is a result of Multnomah County withdrawing funding for the program and will be reallocating funding elsewhere.
According to the program, since its opening the center has helped more than 330 people with over 75 people visiting each day. It's something some business owners feel like is a step in the right direction when it comes to helping people who need it most.

- Portland spent more than $12 million on Centennial Mills in six years as plans halted
- Runtime

- Description
- The fire at Centennial Mills wasn't just the loss of a piece of Portland history. It also raised concerns about potential exposure to hazardous materials, including asbestos and lead.
But the fire is also renewing questions about what happened during the decades the property sat largely undeveloped — and how much public money went into the site along the way.
KATU found the public investment stretches back decades. A September 2006 city report said that, by that point, "more than $12 million of tax increment and other funding" had been spent on the acquisition of Centennial Mills and improvements to the site and its buildings.

The mishap delayed the urgent project by a year and prompted the city to hire another contractor for $600,000 to complete the same work.
The auditor's office received the tip a year ago and requested that City Operations, which oversees Technology Services and Human Resources, investigate and provide its findings.
In this full length interview with KC Jones, Director of Audit Services with the city auditor's office, we learn more about the tip that led to the discovery of the wasted money.

- Description
- The Portland city auditor says the city wasted $650,000 hiring temporary contractors who ultimately could not complete an urgent human resources project — delaying the work by about a year and leading the city to hire another contractor for $600,000.
The investigation began after the auditor's office received a hotline tip. It found that Technology Services and Human Resources launched a project in May 2024 to update Portland's time and payroll system to account for changes to labor agreements. The work was considered urgent because it affected city operations, including union contracts and state paid leave programs.
Because the city did not have enough staff to meet its initial deadline, Human Resources received funding to bring in outside contractors. But after those workers had already been contracted, Technology Services said they could not work directly in the city's time and payroll system because of security concerns.

- A Portland property owner is taking on a massive cleanup after discovering an estimated 50,000 to 100,000 used tires covering nearly every inch of his one-acre lot near Southeast 174th Avenue and Powell Boulevard.
Khanh Tran bought the rundown property with plans to rehab it into his family's future home. But when he arrived in June, he found a problem far bigger than the dilapidated house and squatters: tens of thousands of waste tires.
Tran suspects someone collected and dumped the tires on the property under the guise of a recycling business. He estimates hiring a private company to remove them all could cost $250,000.
Now, Tran is trying another approach. After working with a Salem recycling business to learn how to operate a tire baler, he brought the equipment to the property and began compressing the tires into bales. After several days of working around the clock, Tran said he had produced more than 50 bales, each containing roughly 80 to ...

The Hillsboro Planning Commission previously approved plans for the Sky Harbour development. The City Council is now considering two appeals challenging that decision.
At the center of the dispute is whether Sky Harbour provided enough evidence to demonstrate that the project meets Hillsboro's development criteria.

- After 29-year-old Daniel Lee Rose was arrested for trying to break into a family's home on August 11, he allegedly told police his intention had been to kill the family inside the home, strangers to him, with a kitchen knife.
Court documents in the case note a woman who lives in the home called police to report an attempted break in. Rose was located in the area, and court documents say he told police he was having delusions and hearing voices, specifically a voice telling him, “If you had to save the world, go murder somebody.”
On Tuesday, Rose was arraigned on new charges related to an alleged assault on a corrections officer at the county jail. He was also denied bail in attempted murder charges relating to the Aloha family incident.
Court records show Rose has a lengthy history of apparent mental health issues. He has not been charged with any offenses related to drug use and told police during his latest arrest that he had not taken any d...
