- Description
- Portland leaders are taking a first step toward putting new guardrails around data centers as questions grow over where much larger facilities can be built and how much the public will know before a deal moves forward.
The Portland City Council's Housing and Permitting Committee considered a resolution sponsored by Councilors Tiffany Koyama Lane and Mitch Green that would urge the city administrator to refrain from signing nondisclosure agreements involving data center companies. The proposal also calls for City Council to be notified about inquiries involving potential data center deals and for the city to use transparent public processes.
The committee voted to recommend that the full City Council approve the direction.

- Portland spends $1B a year on contracts, but has no regular third-party oversight
- Runtime

- Date posted
- Description
- The City of Portland spends an estimated $1 billion each year on external contracts, but unlike some other local governments, the city does not have regular third-party oversight of those contracts.
Portland bureaus and offices that execute contracts monitor compliance through software and other internal oversight methods. The Portland city auditor, meanwhile, determines which divisions, offices and bureaus to audit based on factors including hotline tips, risk levels and budget allocations. Specific contracts can receive additional scrutiny when concerns emerge during those audits or through hotline tips.
One recent tip led the auditor to find $650,000 in waste involving a contract where the city office responsible did not conduct adequate due diligence and the contractor ultimately lacked the expertise to complete the required work. After that contract ended, the city executed a new $600,000 contract for the same services.

- Cannabis, alcohol, second homes: Could new taxes help fund Oregon’s roads?

- Description
- As Oregon searches for a long-term solution to its transportation funding problems, state officials are examining dozens of potential ways to raise money, including taxes and fees with little to no connection to driving.
An Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) funding options analysis obtained by KATU lays out more than 50 existing, new, and conceptual funding options for the state's transportation system. Some of the existing options included were already on the table when lawmakers attempted to pass a funding package in 2025, including a higher gas tax, increased vehicle registration and title fees, and an expansion of the road usage charge.
Potential new options include measures outside the traditional transportation space, including higher cannabis and alcohol taxes, an insurance surcharge, a tax on second homes, and others.

- Runtime
- 2:43
- Date posted
- Description
- Portland Public Schools officials are set to present a series of charts to the Portland School Board that lay out, in stark terms, why Superintendent Armstrong recently raised her estimate of how many schools the district needs to close.
The data points to a widening gap between the number of school buildings PPS operates and the number of students actually enrolled in them—a mismatch that, left unaddressed, will leave most schools too small to be properly staffed for years to come.
Since the 2018-19 school year, PPS has lost 6,086 students districtwide. Over that same period, rather than shrinking its footprint to match, the district actually added school buildings—moving from 81 to 83 sites, a net increase of two.

The proposed one-year pilot would provide all city employees free passes for TriMet buses, MAX and WES Trains, and C-Tran local service through August 2027.
The program would cost the city $495,000 to $245,000 more than it currently spends on transit benefits, or about $55 per employee.
The city has offered incentives for decades to encourage employees to drive less through its Trip Reduction Incentive Program (TRIP), which offers employees a 50% discount on public transit. About 500 employees currently participate.

- Oregon remains weeks away from the end of wildfire season, and state leaders say one of their biggest challenges is unfolding far beyond the state’s borders.
Fires are burning across nearly every region of the country, limiting the crews and equipment Oregon would normally be able to call on for help. State fire leaders say the widespread demand has forced Oregon to rely more heavily on international resources.
Gov. Tina Kotek got a firsthand look at the scale of the season Thursday as she flew over active fires and burn scars, including areas affected by the Grasshopper and Cottonwood fires, before landing in Pendleton.

- Description
- Portland Public Schools expects to make an additional $65 million in budget reductions, raising concerns among educators about what another round of cuts could mean for classrooms, staffing and potentially school consolidations.
Portland Association of Teachers President Alisha Chavez said she learned about the additional reductions on the first day of school.
“It was a shock, especially on the first day of school,” Chavez said.
PPS says ongoing enrollment changes, rising costs and the loss of one-time funding are driving the reductions as part of a longer-term effort to stabilize the district's finances and protect student learning.
But Chavez says Portland students are already experiencing the effects of previous cuts. She said PPS laid off 87 educators last year, with most of those positions coming from elementary schools.
In September, PPS plans to review data to determine which schools could potentially be consol...

- The family of a man who died while living in publicly funded transitional housing in Portland is suing Multnomah County and the contractor that operates the housing complex.
The $3 million lawsuit, first reported by The Oregonian, claims Central City Concern failed to check on Eric Eno while he lived at the Shoreline transitional/parole residential complex. The lawsuit alleges that failure allowed Eno’s body to severely decompose after his death and caused his sister, Kristine Eno, emotional distress.
The lawsuit alleges the lack of daily check-ins violated the county’s contract with Central City Concern. It also blames the county for failing to enforce those terms after another resident died under similar circumstances at the same complex months before Eno’s death.

In the meeting with the press after the tour, which is posted in full here, she said it's clear this historic wildfire season is still far from over.
“What I saw from the air was—even though we’re growing containment around the Grasshopper [Fire], you’re seeing a lot of small fires burning across the land. It’s going to take a long time for them to go out. So we are in this for many more weeks. That really came home to me, seeing that from the helicopter," Governor Kotek said.
Wildfires have burned more than 2. 5 million acres in Oregon this year, surpassing the previous record of 1.9 million acres in 2024.
"We have at least another month or so of fire. We don’t know how long some of the fires out there are going to take to get contained. One of the fires we have in the state has a 6...

- President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing the U.S. government to use the name “Lake America” for Lake Ontario, stating the change would be immediate during his Thursday announcement.
Trump had floated the name change in a Truth Social post Tuesday, writing that the United States was giving “serious consideration” to renaming Lake Ontario because it did not expect to do much business with Ontario any longer.

The executive order makes the change official for U.S. federal use, following Trump’s previous move to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America in U.S. government materials.
The action comes as the Trump administration’s trade dispute with Canada intensifies. The U.S. recently imposed 50% tariffs on $20 billion in Canadian goods after talks between the two countries broke down, and Canada has announced retaliatory measures.
Lake Ontario sits along the U.S.-Canada border, with New York on its so...
