- Sunshine turns to clouds, clear skies to rain, and our once-green trees start to turn orange: that can only mean one thing —autumn is underway.
But those living in Downtown Portland know that fall unofficially starts when crows crowd the skies.
Every Fall from October to November, crows start flocking to Downtown Portland.
The roost is just starting to settle in downtown, and Certified Oregon Naturalist Gary Granger with Portland Crow Roost is already following the clues they leave behind.
“I've been doing this for many years now, and I've walked well over a thousand miles under the crows,” said Granger. “And I have really truly have more questions than I had when I began.”

- Description
- Residents in Southeast Portland’s Sellwood-Moreland neighborhood say skunks are increasingly taking over their yards, spraying pets and keeping some people from using their outdoor spaces.
One resident said he has captured dozens of skunks on video in recent nights.
“Basically, I don't have a backyard anymore,” that neighbor, who didn’t want to be named, told KATU.
He said the skunks regularly wander through his yard overnight and have even sprayed one of his dogs.
“They wander around from about 7:30 at night to 7:30 in the morning,” he said.
Multiple neighbors told KATU on Sunday that they have noticed more skunks in the neighborhood and in their backyards.
Mike Ray, who has lived in Sellwood for 40 years, said he has never seen so many skunks in the area.
“We've had these skunks that we've seen in our backyard, and they've sometimes been against the garage and against the basement...

- Breaking down Thursday's Columbia County Tornado Warning with Digital Meteorologist Bobby Corser

- Description
- This past Thursday was an active day weather-wise. We woke up to thunderstorms off the coast and an unstable atmosphere over most of the region.
Just after 12:20 p.m., the National Weather Service in Portland issued a tornado warning for Columbia County, Oregon. In its warning message, NWS Portland said a weather spotter had seen a funnel cloud and radar had indicated rotation.
WSR-88D, the technical name for each of the Doppler radars in the NWS network, is very good at detecting rotation within storms.
The radar detects the motion of objects in the atmosphere, mostly hydrometeors, in relation to the radar.
Rotation is detected when objects are seen moving toward and away from the radar in close proximity. I mentioned this when I was on the air with the warning. We were seeing gate-to-gate velocities around 50 mph, which, in the grand scheme of things, is not a lot, but it is enough to show spin in the clouds.

- A year after Washington County officials warned that jail capacity problems were forcing the release of thousands of inmates, Sheriff Caprice Massey says the county has made progress but staffing and bed shortages continue to put pressure on the jail.
Last year, Washington County District Attorney Kevin Barton said more than 2,100 inmates had been released over an eight-month period because the jail did not have enough capacity to hold them.
At the time, the jail was dealing with a combination of staffing shortages, unavailable beds and construction.
A year later, Massey says critical infrastructure repairs are nearly finished and all but one of the jail's housing units have reopened.
But she says there is no single issue responsible for the continuing pressure on the jail.

Lindsay Clancy’s murder trial ended in a mistrial Friday after jurors said for a third time they could not reach a unanimous verdict.
Judge William Sullivan formally declared the mistrial after pausing the proceedings to allow Clancy’s defense team to file an emergency appeal. Morgan says the area had 63 water sources, but all except two had dried up. BLM specialists monitoring the herd began planning an emergency gather after seeing how limited the available water had become.
Then the Bald Mountain Fire burned portions of the herd management area, adding another challenge to an already severe drought situation. Morgan says BLM had been unable to begin the operation while the region was at preparedness level five because of the number of active fires.
There are currently about 1,200 wild horses across the adjacent herd management areas, according to BLM. The ag...

- Description
- In honor of Gloria Steinem, who died at age 92, we're looking back at an archival interview from her 1983 visit to Portland.
At the time, Steinem was already one of the country's most prominent voices in the feminist movement, as well as an established writer and journalist. She joined the program while promoting her book, “Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions,” a collection of her writing spanning two decades.
During the wide-ranging conversation, Steinem pushes back on claims that the women's movement was “dead,” arguing that declaring a movement finished was a familiar response to social change.
“The idea that the movement is dead is a sort of standard way that change gets dealt with,” Steinem said.
The interview also revisits Steinem's famous 1963 assignment working undercover as a Playboy Bunny. She discusses why she agreed to have that experience adapted for television and argues that the reality of the job was fa...

This time, however, while Portlanders remain divided on the decision to change Cesar Chavez Boulevard to Campesinos Boulevard, as the city's notoriously split council is in agreement on the change, though some council members had reservations about the way the process has been handled.
The renaming issue follows a New York Times Investigation which exposed numerous allegations of sexual abuse against Chavez, a farmworker who pushed for labor rights in the 60's. The proposal to rename it would uphold the initial intent of the name change by honoring the heritage of Latino farm workers with Campesinos, the Spanish word for farmworkers

- For Portland Public Schools (PPS) students, Chromebooks became a lifeline during the COVID-19 pandemic. But now, a group of PPS parents is asking the district to take a closer look at how much technology students are using in the classroom — and whether some of it may be replacing more traditional ways of learning.
The group, Schools Beyond Screens Portland, has drafted a set of proposed policies addressing everything from Chromebook use to artificial intelligence.
Miranda Rake is a PPS parent and part of Schools Beyond Screens Portland. She says the group grew out of conversations among parents who were concerned about how their children were interacting with Chromebooks, educational apps, and AI.
“Now we see that a lot of the things that we adopted as a necessary strategy in the pandemic may not be serving our kids as well as old-fashioned things like a pencil and paper or learning directly from a teacher,” Rake said.
